I fail to see how parking cars on Main Street and an expected winter storm have anything to do with each other. Is this about keeping the streets and sidewalks free of snow and parking cars can hinder the clean-up efforts? Everywhere else in NYC street parking is not prohibited because of a "snow emergency".
I wish the RIOC would explain some of the things that come out of there.
Street parking is prohibited on designated main thoroughfares if the City declares a "snow emergency". But it has to be a really big storm before they declare an emergency. For most storms, like the one expected tonight, they just suspend alternate side parking. Presumably RIOC is, as the previous poster guessed, clearing the streets so they can clean up the snow.
Keeping the streets free of parked cars during a snowstorm allows for easier clean-up afterwards. I guess it's better to do that for one day then to deal with the snow between cars for many days to come. I work for City Sanitation and that's a better way to do it. We can't do that in the city because there is no place for the cars to go.
It will be interesting to see if this will be enforced any more than the regular street cleaning restrictions - does not apply to "regulars"
