I think it is a good neighborhood restaurant/bar.

I appreciate the convenience of being able to get a bite to eat, have a drink, watch some baseball/football and/or meet some friends, old and new, at a place on Roosevelt Island instead of having to travel 20 minutes or more to Manhattan, Queens or Brooklyn as we used to have to do before Riverwalk Bar & Grill opened.

I also like the owners and consider them to be friends. If people have suggestions to improve the Riverwalk, let the owners know about it.

I would like them to keep the Turkey Pretzel Sandwich on the menu which I am told is being removed with the new upcoming menu and to bring back the Ginger Beer.

I actually like the Bar&Grill. I ditched Trellis as soon as they opened. It's not the best and greatest but it could be a lot worse considering the lack of restaurants on RI. I also like the atmosphere and how child-friendly that place is (you can ask the staff to tune one of the TVs to Nick Jr or other children's channel, for example).

I just clicked through to the Craig's List ad for the bar manager position and was surprised that it pays so very little. $10/hr plus bonus. You can't make a living even on RI with that kind of money.

Riverwalk Bar and Grill is a great place. When I first moved here the owner actual sat down and talked with us for more than an hour and he always says hello when we stop by. The patio is great in the summer, the drinks are reasonable for Manhattan, and the food is almost always great. Trellis isn't that bad either and they have/had live music once a week. One more bar on this island and I could almost barhop. Maybe a beer Garden down by Southpoint?

Man a beer garden at Southpoint would be awesome. Seems there's a lot of extra granite down there we could bust up and make some funky tables out of...

why is it the owner of the bar parks his car all day without paying and never gets a ticket .

For the same reason he was able to get the Domino's guy banished from the farmer's market - influence at PSD. Hmmm.. I wonder... does he pay PSD off with money or just free meals/drinks at his establishments? Or does Hudson Related handle the "details"?

Is Gregor just another one of JR's handles. Slowly but surely it sure seems like it. I better stop feeding the trolls.

Gregore he need a permit. With this master lease that will open the market and competition. So this is good for competition.

Anonymous @ 2:17: That's a convenient way to avoid addressing my allegation, which is that Hudson Related throws its weight around directly or indirectly to ensure its lessee businesses in its buildings flourish, even if that means paying off or otherwise encouraging the cops to write tickets as a way of "ushering" competition off the island.

Now, with the master lease deal, Hudson Related will pick and chose businesses for Main St as well! You can dream on if you think a new bar, pizzeria, or deli is going to open on Main St - not while Hudson Related is in control. If fact, Hudson Related - now in the driver's seat as the Master Leaseholder on Main St - is currently "encouraging" RIOC to terminate Trellis' lease - which would drive all the restaurant business on RI to Hudson Related lessees Riverwalk, Nonno's and Tokyo East.

So let's see if any businesses open on Main St that might pose a competitive risk to Southtown merchants. Time will tell - when the new business lessees for Main St are announced.

Yes, Gregor, and you have zero solid evidence that any of your claims are anywhere near the truth. You are just speculating.

ROOSEVELT ISLANDER said...

Gregor, What makes you think Hudson is encouraging RIOC to terminate the Trellis lease? I have looked into the Trellis lease situation and find no evidence to suggest that.

Do you have any specific knowledge on this subject?

It's not in Hudson's interest to have restaurant options only in Southtown. Roosevelt Island could use a few more food options and there is no more room in Southtown so any additional restaurants/cafe/ice cream will have to be located in Northtown unless existing stores leave.

If Trellis can demonstrate they will pay their rent, secure any necessary health and safety permits and maintain an attractive presence on Roosevelt Island, there is no reason why Hudson should not give them a new lease.

Gregor said...

Proof cannot exist - since if was proven that Hudson Related induced RIOC to harass or otherwise encourage Trellis to leave, they might face an anti-monopoly indictment.

Whatever quid pro quo was worked out between RIOC and Hudson Related - does anyone really think we'll ever hear about it much less see it recorded either in the form of a signed agreement or even mentioned electronically via e-mail? For these sorts of deals a handshake is enough.

It does not take someone of particularly deep insight to notice that A) Trellis is facing harassment by RIOC about its lease B) Hudson Related is now the Master Leaseholder of Main St businesses including Trellis; therefore Hudson Related -- also the Leaseholder of Southtown businesses -- may wish to stifle competitors of Riverwalk Bar & Grill. It will say - Oh, we just wished to have a different sort of restaurant at the Trellis space - but think about it: If Trellis didn't exist, where would anyone on RI have to go to obtain a regular American meal or a cup of coffee? Answer: Riverwalk Bar and Grill.

It doesn't take the RIOC or some conspiracy to see that the existing retail and dining facilities in North Town are a dump. If they cannot get their act straight I am all for the master lease owner to kick them out. The beauty is that I am not alone in this opinion and I am very sure that the majority of RI residents are with me in this.

Hey Anonymous @ 8:45: You are welcome to remain in Southtown then.

Do you expect readers to applaud your "snobism"?

But why stay in Southtown? Why not decamp to an area uncontaminated by the underclass, such as Tribeca, where accused rapist Mr. Moneybags himself Mr. Straus-Kahn is now renting $50,000./mo digs? Maybe that kind of an area is more to your taste, no?

Hudson Related does not have the backing of the majority on RI in kicking out Main St businesses, because the majority of residents on RI are decent human beings, unlike you.

Main St businesses hum with activity; so remember Hudson Related: It's fine to add businesses to the empty storefront, but keep existing Main St businesses going! They fill a vital need in our multi-faceted, hard-working community!!

Anonymous said...

I have no idea why you think I live in South Town. Far from it. Do you really think only South Towners are dissatisfied with the state of the *existing* retail and dining facilities? Everything else you are saying, as always, is just hyperbole without much backing in reality.

Gregor said...

Anonymous @10:13am: You should like in Southtown - obviously, the corporate/bland world of chain stores like Duane Reade and even Starbucks is more your speed than "working-class" Main St!

But hey, if you don't live in Southtown, and you don't shop in Northtown, then you must be camped out in Motorgate, partaking of meals in the "pleasant" fast-food style eating area of Gristedes!!

Like I said: Unless Hudson Related obtains grants to finance "facelifts" and implements lease extensions pegged to the majority working-class community of RI for our beloved Main St businesses, Hudson Related: Hands off our Main St deli, card shop, hardware store!

Anonymous said...

Hudson Related: Please clean up Main Street and make it more inviting for everybody. Why only target the lower stratospheres? Try to reel in everybody.

Gregor said...

Anonymous @3:59pm: Albeit I must take exception to your all-to-typical of your class characterization of the working-class as the "lower stratosphere" (even though it implies you and your kind are floating in the ether like mindless luftmenschen) in principle, I agree with your comment.

Let's call it a "truce" and jointly urge Hudson Related to put money into Main St, to keep the stores going that have managed to hang in there for years, and to bring in some new stores that will appeal to Everybody!!!

Anonymous said...

Listen, I am just rephrasing what you keep saying here which is that working class folks will not be able to shop at places that adhere to higher standards than the current Main Street facilities. That the demand to get this all cleaned up is a racist thing to do. etc. etc.

My "kind" of people here just want to see clean stores and polite service. This is nothing you want to see? Just to top it off, I am an immigrant as well and come from a country where customer service is almost non-existent in retail stores. But at least the stores are clean! They are inviting! I don't understand how anybody can be against such simple things.

Gregor said...

First may I say that I definitely respect your experience as a new American and you are heartily welcome in the US. Most in the US, especially in NYC, are either immigrants or first or second generation "native" Americans. Unfortunately, despite this fact, racism or harmful social stratification, is still wide-spread, even in NYC where people of white background are now in the minority!

Hey, we all appreciate good customer service and as I said before, I never had bad customer service at the "old-line" Main St stores. In fact, if anything, I prefer interacting with those brave Mom-'n'-Pop owners/their relatives than the bland/mindless zombies typically employed by the big corporate chains such as Duane Reade. Plus, I have to say I have no problem with the cleanliness of or disposition of items in any of these businesses. If you would shop there a few times, the location of items will be imprinted upon your memory rather quickly/easily as these are not particularly big stores thus eliminating the need for signage directing buyers to particular aisles. These stores are not "chaotic" at all if you would just take a moment to shop there!

I do think that kicking out small businesses owned by hard-working non-white/immigrants catering to other hard-working mostly non-white/immigrant clientele in favor of putting in a chain store such as a Duane Reade or a Walmart is de facto racism, as it's pitting the economic muscle of a white-owned corporation such as Hudson Related to crush a few small struggling non-white owned neighborhood businesses.

That's what I mean by racist - Hudson Related would not only be unfair to remove businesses that for years have put their heart and soul into their stores, but racist to boot since everyone knows it's much more difficult for people of color in general to obtain credit or even, as here on RI, leases. I am not even addressing the language/sophistication/education barrier some of these Mom-'n'-Pop business face, which Hudson Related does not.

The issue is the unequal playing field. Hudson Related is a billion-dollar corporation, a giant in real estate development and it wishes to come in and "clean up" Main St. That sounds an awful lot like ethnic/socio-economic clean-up to me...
