Is that a vagrant panhandler asking them for money or the president of the residents' association?

The President of the club RIRA and his wife the Secretary miss this chance to beg for money for their " fun stuff" as they put it. I have yet to see a listing of all the money collected from movie shoots or tv shoots here...what do they do with it, split it up with each other and RIOC?

I challenge RIRA and RIOC to list all the money collected from movie and TV shoots on RI the last 10 years and show us islanders where each penny went. Where has it gone????

When is the Q102 bus going to stop at South Point Park? I hear that the MTA is waiting on Mr. Martinez to approve the bus stop being placed there, what is the holdup?

HIke the mile plus down to the new park, even when the Q102 bus zooms right past 3 times an hour...the kids on the island would love to take the buses down an play at the park. Where is the playground and things for kids to do?

I see  in the Wire that Matt and Sherie already have their hands out to Stanford and Cornell.  I hope these institutions have the brains to realize that they can swat these two away like flies and they shouldn't allow the annoyance to stop them if either one gets the go-ahead from the city.

Matt Katz and his wife are not being honest when telling anyone or any group that THEY represent the residents on this island! 1400 people voted during that so called election for President of RIRA, less than 10 % of the island even turned out to vote??? Almost 14,000 live here! Collecting money and saying you represent the islanders is a lie! You are there collecting money for you and your friends and your interests on the island. That is just how it is. The fact that RIRA is allowed to remain an entity is a farce...they must split the money with RIOC when ever they find people to take money from. As of yet, I still have not seen any lists of money collected and what it is spent on....I do not trust RIRA and that click, and never will till it is run the way a resident's association should be run and when they have ALL the people on the island at heart, North town, Southtown, women, children, elderly and the handicapped.

I am so tired of nameless/faceless people battering Matt and Sherie.  They are doing much more for this island than those of you who can only cowardly criticize from your computer.  Get out and do something for this community if you think RIRA is so awful.  Become part of a committee instead of making these crude complaints.

Ms. Marcus, let me make sure I get this right. If we identify ourselves (as I've always done), and provide serious and POLITE commentary, contributions, and criticism, we can be assured that committee chairs like Mr. Long, Ms. Shull, and Ms. Sen will deny us the opportunity of POLITELY raising our concerns at in-person meetings, and then when we raise our concerns via E-mail, we will suffer the hostile environment of tons of impolite responses (childish internet cartoons, sniping attacks, unsubstantiated pile-ons, etc.), and when we decline to be shoo-ed away (because we happen to disagree - think Ms. Margie Smith), those in the minority will be quashed (think Housing Committee report); and when we complain with letters to the WIRE, we'll be censured on baseless unsubstantiated complaints (myself), and so on.

Really Ms. Marcus, RIRA has put on an excellent display over the past couple months on how it is unwilling to tolerate minority points of view and POLITE complaints about RIRA's own openness, transparency, fairness, due process, and democracy.

(Why the Ms. Marcus all of a sudden?  I thought we were on first name basis.)  I was not in the least thinking of you, as you are an activist who sprouts opinions.  I was referring to the hidden others who are only good at insulting volunteers who give much of their time to this Island.  So I do not understand the reply.  But thanks anyway.

Ms. Marcus, of course I call you Susan in person. Yes, we are on a first name basis and I enjoy our conversations.  However, in blog posts and in public writing, I refer to people formally, out of courtesy and respect. A year or two ago, I had referred to the Director of Public Safety by his first name (we are on a first name basis, many people know that), and several people complained on the blog that I was being disrespectful to the Director. I realized that they might have a point, so I changed my writing style to refer to everyone formally, with the appropriate title.

Just the same in RIRA Common Council meetings: I'm on a first name basis with everyone, but I refer to people formally (out of respect), and I refer to Mr. Katz as "Mr. President" or "Mr. Chair" to show respect towards his chairing the meeting.

It's a little thing, but it's a gentle reminder of encouraging one's own civility and encouraging others' civility.

Finally, Yes I agree with you: blog posts are better when they are signed by the actual individuals, regardless of what they are saying.

I'll still call you by first name when I see you! Have a great weekend!

Tell me SQ what have Mr. and Mrs. Katz done for all the residents on the island? Please take comfort that I can say and assure you I do more than you can conceive for this island and the people that live on it.

SQMarcus said...

Then who are you? I would be pleased to meet your acquaintance. If you are a person-around-town, then you must be aware that they devote their lives to this island, serve on multiple committees and are doing everything in their power to save the post office and volunteer for the Wire. Please use this as a forum to enlighten me of your achievements.

I think Matt & Sherrie should be arrested for pan-handling.  All they do is shake down Movie-shoots and renters of island space.  Now, they're shaking down Ivy-League Universities who aspire to build something positive for the island.  Let's make that Officer Dino's first assignment on R.I.  Lock these 2 beggers up!

roozevelt said...

Become part of a committee?  In RIRA?   So, you can get physically assaulted at a meeting when someone who yells louder than you wants to make a point?  Come on SQMarcus, get real!  RIRA is a joke!  The President has no control of the meetings!  The committee chairs think they are actually in charge of stuff!  RIRA is imploding from within... under the feeble leadership of Matt & his wife Sherie.  Them, begging for money is no different then the bums throughout the city who do the same thing.  The difference is that these 2 beg for "fun-stuff".  Others beg to survive.

Dunno man, the stop at the Hospital is literally a 1-2 minute walk away from the entrance... considering the entire island is only 2 miles long, I think you are really exaggerating here. If anything, the red bus should go there, not the Q102 (which already stops pretty much right there).

bartonfinck said...

Again, I am requesting that there be a posting of ALL the money collected in the name of the residents of RI in the last say 5 years?  That should be easy, so I will wait to see it...I am surprised you do not want to see it as well.  I still have not seen any lists of money collected and what it is spent on....I do not trust RIRA and that click, and never will till it is run the way a resident's association should be run and when they have ALL the people on the island at heart, North town, Southtown, women, children, elderly and the handicapped...if RIRA has done everything on the up and up, what consequences can happen? The truth may come out what has happend to probably thousands and thousands of dollars that have been solicited in our name ... don't you want to know?

The island red bus and Q102 should be a community bus and all the bus stops should be space out even and at equal distances. As of right now most bus stops are located very convenient to the buildings in North town, and those that are disabled and elderly are not able to use the system the way is was and is supposed to be used. It maybe a 2 minute walk for you, that is good, glad you can do it, many on this island are dependent on wheel chairs, and walker. The Park as Ms. Torres stated on opening day is for everyone, not just those that can walk there, but it should be for everyone.
