Cornell Awarded New York City Applied Sciences & Engineering School On Roosevelt Island Following Stanford's Withdrawal - Announcement To Be Made Monday Afternoon

Well that didn't take long after Stanford's withdrawal.

Cornell Tech NYC tweeted tonight:
*** BREAKING: Cornell Wins Contest For City Tech Campus ***
The Wall Street Journal reports:
Mayor Michael Bloomberg plans to announce on Monday that Cornell University won the high-profile competition to build a new applied-science campus in New York City, people familiar with the decision confirmed Sunday.

The announcement comes three days after Stanford University unexpectedly withdrew from the competition following tense negotiations with the Bloomberg administration. Stanford's sudden exit left Cornell as the clear favorite, and Mr. Bloomberg plans Monday afternoon to make it official....

UPDATE 12/19 - The NY Times reports:
... The announcement, to take place at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center on the Upper East Side, according to people briefed on the plan, will come three days after Stanford pulled out of the contest, and Cornell announced a $350 million gift, the largest in its history, to help bankroll its proposal.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk about the matter publicly, those briefed said that Cornell had long before emerged as the front-runner. “It was already very much along the way to this result,” one said....
and:
... Stanford, seen as an early front-runner, balked at meeting some of the city’s conditions during negotiations in recent weeks. City officials also said it was not clear that Stanford’s entire team — administration, faculty and alumni — was as wholeheartedly behind the project as Cornell’s people were, measured in part by Cornell’s ability to raise money for it....

I am ecstatic! Not only a great resource for New York City and the region, but a fantastic addition to the fabric of Roosevelt Island.

Congrats Cornell and Roosevelt Island.  Although I feel a bit sad that Stanford seems to have been muscled out.  In the long run, it would have been nice if one of the top institutions in the entire world had set up its East Coast campus on RI.

Congratulations! Welcome to the Island, Cornell!

I am very surprised it got approved so fast for Cornell. I am all for research and science, but RI is way too small for this to be put here. Originally all new education complexes- large ones, such as this proposal were supposed to be built on Governor's Island. I am all for Cornell- I used to work for Sloan-Kettering.

This Island has lost too many affordable housing units in the last five years or so and they have not or will never be replaced.

The fact that Goldwater is being booted off the Island just a few years after elected officials including Jessica Lappin and Matt Katz swore on camera to NY One News they would never let that happen is very nefarious.

It also dishonors the memory of FDR- who had polio and was in wheelchair.  The patients in Goldwater are residents there and most of them are bed- bound.

The island needs a medical complex for the Residents- a good, modern at the very least Urgent Care center with some beds- so when a resident has an emergency here- they do not have to worry about getting to the other side of the River alive.

It is very shady that Cornell got an anonymous donor and right after Stanford withdrew, it gets announced today at a huge- never- ending News Conference by Mayor Bloomberg- who never sets foot on this Island.

Just as shady as the HR new stores deal- how did they get awarded that deal so fast and who were the other bidders- maybe Gov. Cuomo should be investigating all of this before he leaves office- he may be gunning for the White House as VP.

We have too many transportation problems now, etc.

I am really quite perplexed why this small, tiny island with inadequate transportation was chosen.

"maybe Gov. Cuomo should be investigating all of this before he leaves office" - I hope not, he's not squeaky clean either, considering who he appointed as DHCR commissioner and RIOC president!

What about the DHCR commish?  Leslie Torres has been doing OK - a bit remote perhaps, but running RIOC satisfactorily.

I agree with Ms. Durkin that Cuomo should look into the Master Lease agreement, if it was awarded fair and square etc.

I doubt that Cuomo will be selected to run for VP next year.  But he may eventually be a pres contender in 2016.

You probably caught up with the news by now and read that it was a wealthy Cornell alumnus who donated that money. I am happy to see that there are still people out there that believe in things like this and put the money where they think it belongs. Nothing to see here, really.

Goldwater has been a dump for a very, very long time. I know a few people that work in this facility and they have been telling me that the building is in such a state that there is no other way but to tear it down. Even most patients agree with this. Should it be replaced by another care facility or something else? We already have Coler and I personally think that's plenty. The engineering campus is going to be great. I am not looking forward to the years of construction but definitely to the years after.

I disagree that we need a hospital for residents on this island. There are plenty of options just minutes away either by car or by ambulance, especially if it is a matter of life and death.

Oh, and the reason why the decisions were made so quickly when Stanford withdrew: Cornell and Stanford have been the winners already for the RI site and since once pulled out there is no need to wait until January. Cornell committed and they won. Looks like the city is also going to award NYU and/or Columbia as Bloomberg said before: there doesn't have to be only one winner.

If this actually comes to fruition, it will be the best thing that's ever happened to Roosevelt Island.
