Yushan China Skybridge Makes The Roosevelt Island Tram Look Like The Concorde - Just Don't Look Down

Some people with a fear of heights experience discomfort when riding on the Roosevelt Island Tram and others just don't like the jolt they sometimes receive when passing the Tram Towers. Well, for all of you who feel sick or queasy when on the Roosevelt Island Tram just be glad you don't live in or visit the Chinese village of Yushan.

The NY Daily News reports:

This thing makes the Roosevelt Island tram look like the Concorde.

Stunning photos published in a British magazine show a Chinese village so remote, it can only be accessed by a primitive gondola consisting of a few cables and a rickety steel basket.

The "sky road" is the only connection the 200 villagers of Yushan have to the outside world, ShortList magazine reported....

According to Shortlist:
... A pair of thick cables are strung between two high cliff faces with a steel cage suspended below to carry people and goods in and out of the village....

and:
... The ropeway was built in 1997; before that villagers faced a walk of several days to get to the next nearest village.

The ropeway, which is powered by a diesel engine, is 1,000 meters long and 400 meters above the valley floor....

Do you feel better about riding the Roosevelt Island Tram now?

It's amazing where humans decide to settle. Islands that are so remote it takes day by boat to get to the next settlement, townships like these that are days away from others, even here in the USA and especially in Canada there are some very remote towns and I wonder what makes people stay in such places.

The Concorde, a 40-year-old plane that was retired after a horrific crashed killed more than a 100 people.

The Concorde has not always been 40-year-old. And other planes crashed. We should not start studying every metaphor or we will never see the end of it.

The Concorde that crashed in 2000 (flight AF 4590) was 25 1/2 years old at that time.

Good point. I'd still rather ride on one of our 2-year-old tram cars. :)
