Changes Starting Tomorrow To Roosevelt Island Red Bus Stop At Tram Plaza - Red Bus Stop Returns To Tram Ramp Area, Kiosk Stop Eliminated

Image of Soon To Be Eliminated Tram West Red Bus Stop

Received the following message from the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) this morning
Please be advised, effective Friday January 4, 2013, the Red Bus will no longer stop at the Tram West bus stop (located near the R.I Historical Society kiosk). The Tram West bus stop has been relocated back to its original location just outside the entrance of the Tram Plaza along the east/west road.

The Q102 will continue to pick up passengers at the Tram West Bus stop.

Sincerely,

Roosevelt Island Operating Corp Advisories Group

I sent the following inquiry to RIOC Acting President Don Lewis and Transportation Manager Cy Opperman.
Can you please clarify where the Tram Red Bus stop on the east/west road will now be located?

By "original location" indicated in advisory below, do you mean the current bus stop on the east/west road or do you mean the original bus stop location that used to be about 25 feet west, closer to Manhattan, than the current east/west bus stop?

Also, why is the bus stop being eliminated?

Will update when answer received. However, I have been advised, though not officially confirmed by RIOC, that the East/West Red Bus stop will return to the original location closer to the Tram Ramp.

Looks like no more running down the hill to catch the Red Bus at the Kiosk stop. Will any additional route changes be made such as eliminating the trip to Southpoint Park and a return to going around the Fountain Circle on way back to subway?

More on the Red Bus Stop and Route at the Tram Plaza Station from previous post.

UPDATE 9:30 PM - This evening I saw the Red Bus heading north on West Channel Road, drive past waiting passengers at the Kiosk Bus Stop, turn right at the Kiosk corner, stop at the Tram Ramp to pick up passengers and then go around the Tram Fountain Circle on its way to the subway.

The bus now picks up below the circle on the tram side, then loops around the circle to head for the usual subway pickup spot.

I just took the bus at 1043p. It stopped next to the stairs to drop off and then BACKED UP to align with the exit ramp and wait for the next tram. It then made the loop and turned right to go to the subway. The back-up plan seems unsafe. Too many people cross without looking. Are they avoiding going to the park and hospital for some reason? Don't guess well be seeing disabled tourists on the south part of the island from now on.

That's because Cy Opperman was there testing it and tweaking the timing before it was going to go live.

I can hear the screams already that these changes needed community input.

Change isn't a terrible thing, but a little advance warning and an explanation or opportunity to comment would have been nice. There may be a great reason for this change; sudden, unexplained alterations are always going to generate discontent.

They moved the 40RR road stop with no warning (for what seem to be reasonable safety concerns due to the facade repair), but failed to move the Q102 sign, so now that bus passes people waiting at the stop. Several people have asked that the 102 sign be moved as well (and that the stop relocation be only temporary) but it seems those requests are being ignored.

YetAnotherRIer, I believe the complaint would properly be: Why did it take two years to implement? It was the opinion of RIRA (via RIRA President, RIRA Planning Committee Chair, RIRA Island Services Chair) that the kiosk stop should have never be used for the Red Bus (for all the advantages cited above).

I've heard the Q102 stop at/near 40 RR will return.

That stop was never really gone. Most buses still stop there.

The drivers who regularly drive the route know there should be a sign on the S/B side and will stop. The drivers who haven't been doing the route regularly, though, just keep on trucking since there's no sign. The stop still exists, RIOC just didn't move the sign.

So the portion of the route to Southpoint Park has been eliminated?

Mark Lyon said...

It would appear so. If you want to go to the park, you must wait for the Q102. The Red Bus cuts through next to the tram and goes back to the subway.

Frank Farance said...

Right, RIOC will fix the signage so they stop, as per Mr. Lyon's explanation.

You are right - not just for people but for motorists making the right onto the transverse road. They may see the bus but they may not realize it's backing up.

I was out by the park this morning and I saw a red bus make the full loop.

What I don't understand is why is this so difficult, it's one bus stop that we're talking about here. Why can't the RIOC get it together and make up their mind. If the RIOC is going to eliminate the kiosk stop, then can't the bus just let passengers off at the stop sign thats in the circle. YES, we will need to cross the street, but that shouldn't be a big deal, right? The last time I looked we live in a BIG CITY. We have to cross streets every now and then. Isn't that what we do best? What make Roosevelt Island so different?

You seem to be new here :) anything that has to do with crossing the street is a hazard in many people's eyes here on the blog and within the RIRA. But I agree with you, it would be perfectly fine.
