Can anybody explain the rather ominous-sounding Met Life-Masonic ID screening? Is the screening supposed to inform you if your identity has been stolen?

Can you explain exactly how it works? For some reason, I'm associating it with micro-chipping pets. How does the PD associate the information with particular kids/seniors? If they do not have ID on them, and cannot speak up for themselves, how does the PD know who they are? Are photographs taken and added to a database, or fingerprints?

Janet Falk said...

Photos and fingerprints are part of the process. Carol Tanjutco has the details. I asked her to comment.

By hipster again you probably mean white-collar middle class families. And I am pretty sure they will be involved. I am sure you will be as well considering your stance on positive community action.

CheshireKitty said...

OK, understood. Thanks, Janet.

CheshireKitty said...

White-collar middle-class families are hipsters? Really? Since when?

Hipsters are primarily youth - not always families, and most likely not white-collar. Some of them are students, others trust-fund kids. If they work at all, they may be artists - or identify as artists even if they are involved in another occupation such as the food/bar industry. Most would shun a conventional/corporate world if possible. Of course many corps today themselves shun the conventional.

The nycha is planning to lease to private developers land within housing developments in harlem and lower manhattan.prospective developers would benefit by being able to charge the sky high rents common in the surrounding Manhattan neighborhoods my god.when doses this end.this city is going to hell. No one cares about the low and middle income people of this city

Bill Blass said...

Its time to get rid of the main street wire
Its a rag
All we need is the Roosevelt islander.

Bill Blass said...

I wish all these hipsters would move back to the mid west.where they came from

Bill Blass said...

I will not be volunteeing as i will not cater to the people who are the ones that want people like me to move off the island

Westviewer said...

I wish you would learn what "hipster" means. Here's a clue: there are none on Roosevelt Island.

While looking for a helpful video to assist Bill in understanding the thing about which he is so fascinated, I found this. It's funny.

But I'm sure you'll be there for the free bagels.

mpresident said...

Fidel Castro was a hipster:

CheshireKitty said...

Naahh.. boots not "special" enough. Army fatigues and cap - yes; glasses & beard - yes. Shiny watch - no. Playing baseball - not really. Boots - definitely no! Thus, *maybe* 50-50 "hipster"..

CheshireKitty said...

How right you are Bill. The important thing is to ensure Bloomie's lap dog Quinn, or any Bloomie-clones like Lhota, do not get elected in November. Vote for DiBlasio, even Wiener is OK (although he may not have a chance).

mpresident said...

But in actuality, playing baseball in the watch, boots and army fatigues makes it hipster.

CheshireKitty said...

Can't you put your disagreements aside for one day? Get into the spirit of things - volunteer!

The NY Life Masonic ID screening is a good idea, I was suspicious at first, but I recommend it for your kids. They have a laptop, portable printer, and a CD burner. They take a photo of your child, their fingerprints, a voice sample. Then they print out the fingerprints and photo on paper and give you a CD of your child saying their name, etc.. There is NO retention of the information, you (as parent) get to keep all the information (the printout and the CD). Then they continue onto the next person with nothing retained in the laptop.

The purpose of this exercise is: God forbid your child is lost, you can give some biometrics (photo, fingerprints, voice sample) to the police to further track/ID your child. For similar reasons, I guess it would be helpful for seniors and Silver Alerts.

My suggestion for improvement is: since the fingerprints are already digitized, export the biometric data in a standard format, i.e., not just a visual image of the finger (printed on paper).

This exercise has nothing to do with identity theft. This is not like chipping pets with an RFID, there is no RFID or any other digitization in this exercise.

CheshireKitty said...

FYI: The Masons will be on hand signing up new members, as well.

CheshireKitty said...

Interesting. Why don't they add the fingerprints to the l/e database? Or would they need to have l/e on hand to do so?

Bill: Here's a good article on the symbiotic connection between politics and real estate in NYC, especially how that plays out for Ms. Quinn. Read and weep... http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/2013/06/christine_quinn_16.php

You want NYCHA housing - you get dunes as far as Bloomberg is concerned. Guess who's getting the decent housing post-Sandy, Bill? Guess it's not us! Luxury development - on a mega scale - to protect the yuppified LES & Lower Manhattan. Let the Rockaways public housing sink into the Atlantic says our great Mayor. Read all about it here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/11/seaport-city-on-nycs-east-river-bloomberg_n_3423170.html?utm_hp_ref=new-york

CK: Fingerprints, like other biometrics (e.g., DNA), concern the Fourth Amendment and privacy issues. Besides, many people would be opposed to volunteering to have their fingerprints, DNA, etc. added to a national database.

[From "http://www.lectlaw.com/def/f081.htm"]
FOURTH AMENDMENT [U.S. Constitution]

'The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.'

... The gathering of fingerprint evidence from 'free persons' constitutes a sufficiently significant interference with individual expectations of privacy that law enforcement officials are required to demonstrate that they have probable cause, or at least an articulable suspicion, to believe that the person committed a criminal offense and that the fingerprinting will establish or negate the person's connection to the offense. ...

CheshireKitty said...

You know that Bloomberg has mandated fingerprinting Food Stamp applicants in NYC. Why didn't a judge throw out this Bloomberg rule?

Frank Farance said...

Possibly because fingerprinting was used for identification to avoid fraud, not for law enforcement. For example, an employer requires you to register your fingerprints, hand prints, or some other biometric so your employer's time card system knows it's really You punching in/out of the time clock.

For the citywide system (the State no longer uses fingerprints for food stamps), I've heard that the fingerprints are only shared with law enforcement if there is evidence of fraud. Here's the wording from the California system, which seems commonplace:

"SFIS [Statewide Fingerprint Imaging System] helps make sure that people don’t get duplicate aid by trying to use someone else’s identity. SFIS also checks to see if your fingerprint images are
already in the system.

SFIS is confidential. We check your fingerprint image and photo against the database of people getting aid. We only use the information to prevent and investigate duplicate aid. SFIS is only shared with law enforcement if public assistance fraud is suspected." See "http://www.cdss.ca.gov/cdssweb/entres/forms/English/pub337.pdf"

The people iñ octagon and southtown will no longer be called hipsters
They will now be called the elite

CheshireKitty said...

Elite? Not really. They weren't smart enough to apply for M-L or rent stabilized housing in NYC - and there is some left. How can you call them the elite?

Westviewer said...

You are in serious need of a dictionary.

mpresident said...

I've been on a waitlists for ML/stabilized housing for over 5 years (including the Westview list). Some of us have to pay market rate while we wait for everyone else to die.

Bill Blass said...

Forget about getting into westview it will soon be coming out of m.l. So the people living there now are not giving up their apartments as they will become rent stabilized for the ones still in their apartmants

Bill Blass said...

If you are not on a fixed income then rent stabilizion is best for you

Bill Blass said...

To get the vote of the elite people of southtown and octagon I will call for a Roosevelt island tax cut .if they hire their nannys and other household help to people living on the island i will see to it that they will get a big tax write off

CheshireKitty said...

As always RIRA will distribute free coffee and bagels along with T-shirts to the spruce-up volunteers. Why not be a mensch and help spruce up RI?

CheshireKitty said...

But it wasn't ironic on his part. He was constantly in fatigues; still is mostly. What they should have done was make him a Yankee for a day - that would have been an unforgettable experience for him!

Frank Farance said...

MushMouse: So when someone asks for info (which could be helpful if their kid went missing), you're complaining because I provided the information, right? And you believe (somehow) there is a Negative in providing and sharing information, right? In fact, that's been part of the problem with lots of things on the Island: people (many of them old-timers) who understand things, but don't want to share it with newcomers. My sense is: sharing information is a Good Thing. But you're against that, right?
