13 Arrested For Unlawful Assembly At Firefighters Field Last Sunday Afternoon - NYPD Reports Use Of Gang Signs, Language And Impeding Access Of Others

The 8/4 -5 Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) Public Safety Incident Report noted:

08/04/13 - 1450 - 425 Main St. - Unlawful Assembly - NYPD arrested numerous male subjects.
A NYPD Press Spokesperson adds:
13 males arrested for using gang signs and language Sunday afternoon and impeding others from access at Firefighters Field.
The 8/4 - 5 PSD Report also indicates:
08/04/13 - 2233 - 888 Main St. - Grand Larceny - PSD report filed. NYPD refused.
PSD Director John McManus states that the Grand Larceny was a bicycle stolen from an Octagon Building Bike Rack. That makes the second bike stolen from Octagon bike rack in a week.

WE NEED NYPD HERE ON RI ! Again, I say this.. when will it happen? We are sitting ducks for more and more gang related activity, it is getting worse here.

Honestly speaking. Without bias. You guys really should look into arming qualified psd officers. Expand the department to around 50 members and create a small gang unit and let them do their thing. Honestly.

The unit that arrested those gang members are not nypd patrol cops. Theywere from a totally seperate division. 114pct had no hand in this except having the precinct used for arrest proprocessing.

I don't think it will happen, and I don't think it should. I advocated for the same thing - after speaking to Mr. McManus, it started becoming clear that (1) NYPD is here already - when needed as well as periodic patrols; (2) a dedicated PSD is more effective than a stretched 114th precinct. Discussions on managing the number of (bored) teens on the island may be more beneficial.

Oprah refused a look at a bag for 38.000.000. Rich people are fools.paying this kind of money for a bag. Only people in southtown and octagon buy bags at this price

What doses a 38.000.000 bag do that a 20.00 bag can not do this is why this world is so f...d up .these people will pay for a bag at this price than give a home less person a few cents for food

Why do the people from southtown going to the farmers market on saturdays always look at me funny when i am sitting in front of eastwood

Bill: You got the story wrong. Oprah wanted to look at the bag and could have afforded to buy it. http://entertainment.inquirer.net/107417/swiss-sales-clerk-tells-oprah-she-cant-afford-38000-handbag
Who knows why rich people purchase expensive status symbols. You should look at the prices of fine/unique wristwatches sometime - those get much more expensive than 38K, for something that isn't even specifically needed anymore. To say that Southtowners and those in Octagon are fools, because they will buy 38K bags, because all rich people are fools to pay that kind of money for a bag? First, if they had the kind of money to afford the 38K bag, Southtown and Octagon residents wouldn't be living on RI. Second, maybe it is foolish to pay 38K for a bag. It's a status symbol to own an expensive bag. The whole system of status symbols/luxury goods is foolish. Maybe that means we're all fools for snapping up cheap replicas of expensive goods? Or mass market goods with perhaps your label Bill Blass slapped on them - to somehow lend them some cachet?

Aren't these local gang kids the same ones that Feely & Francis were calling "survivors"?
Come on man!

What does this, or any of your other comments have to do with anything in this article? Yup, nothing at all. Perhaps people are looking at you funny cause you're a wannabe troll, and failing miserably at it, too.

They now call it roosevelt landings. But it will always be eastwood

No Bill; you have it all wrong again: Newcomers want to live in a real neighborhood - with all the problems, variety of personalities, diversity, interests that go with it. Alot of the newcomers left their towns elsewhere to be immersed in the kaleidoscopic variety of a big city. You are misinterpreting their looks. If they are looking at your funny, who could they possibly look at first on the train on the street? They would be looking in 100 directions at once since almost every person on the train on street is "funny" or unique in some way.

There is very little you can accomplish in criticizing the new residents this way. You are bitter because you and people like you were left out of the development bonanza of the past 15 or 20 years, as the focus shifted to luxury development. Today, the problem is the RIOC Board members, who have let Kramer/H-R get away with not building affordable housing at Southtown - instead accepting the notion that the hospital housing was "affordable" - clearly, a travesty. Next time a RIOC Board member election comes around, I strong suggest you and as many of your neighbors you can recruit, run for RIOC Board membership. There's no guarantee you will be appointed even if your are win, but if you are appointed, then you will then be in a position to stick it Kramer/H-R on buildings 8 & 9. You can tell Kramer that if he doesn't want to build affordable housing there, you will you will dump him and look for another developer that will. RI is valuable enough that even a modest, non-luxury development could be profitable - just not as profitable as a luxury development.

Unfortunately, that might be the final decision you make as a RIOC Board member because probably, it won't be too long after that that Cuomo will can you... But why is that? Isn't the Gov. a rising star in the Dem Party? Maybe - but Gov. Cuomo is also completely tied into donations from developers (i.e. bribes). Just check out this story: http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/cuomo-100k-developer-signing-tax-break-law-article-1.1422003 For a $100,000 political contribution directly into Cuomo's PAC, the developer received $35,000,000 - yes you read that right - 35 million! - in tax breaks! I ask you: How is that for "smart investing"?!

So, I doubt if they - the newcomers - are looking at you funny sitting in front of Eastwood, Bill. Your presence actually acts to keep property values up by maintaining a semblance of urban grit, interesting diversity, making the island seem real less like an artificially planted town. If not for the old-timers that are still around, these newcomers might as well not have moved to NYC..

OldRossie said...

Or because you're giving THEM the evil eye.

westviewgirl said...

there was a shooting on the island, more and more gang related activity is happening, we pay city and state tax that is paid to NYC., We deserve the same patrolling that happens anywhere else in the city and state. Do you not agree?

OldRossie said...

I most certainly do agree. That's why I emailed the board, and sat down with Director McManus last month. He made the point I noted (NYPD is in fact here) and after we talked I concluded for myself that we have more presence WITH PSD than we would without. I've lived in other parts of the city, and in retrospect, I see far more of a presence from PSD than I ever did from NYPD in other residential areas of queens, etc. (obviously I'm not comparing to high traffic commercial areas like grand central). PSD effectiveness is an issue, but I don't have a solution for that... Contradicting MYSELF from a few months ago: I don't think replacing PSD with NYPD is the solution.

NotMyKid said...

More training and give them guns is the most efficientand effective solution. At least start a pilot pprogram with a few qualified supervisors and officers. Doesnt have to be overnight but if somet hing major happens, at least protection is a few seconds away with psd armed response.

NotMyKid said...

This was not the first shooting and it won't be the last. Sad but true. Its probably the 5th gun related incident in the last 5 years. You guys have an actual law enforcement department in the middle of main street with responses in mere minutes, yet You the community refuse to use your resources appropriatly and wisely. There is noone else to blame except for rioc and lack of community outrage for lack of superior protection from psd. Its nausiating to think resources are being used unwisely.

Where did I mention Roosevelt Landings vs. Eastwood? Your comment makes no sense in reply to mine.
