Its time to get rid of zip car on the island.the only people who use zip car are the hipsters from the mid west like Kansas.who do not know how to drive in new York city. They drive like they are driving on a farm taking driving leasons.I almost got run over by one of these hipsters .as I was walking on the sidewalk..we dont need zip car.these hipsters need to learn how to drive.they must understand they are not in Kansas anymore

It'll only get worse as the Cornell Tech students start to move in. Commenting on this blog isn't going to change things. Maybe you should move away from RI to get away from them :)

Bill, Andrew's got great advice. I think you should take it.

Actually, it does matter. He was told THREE DIFFERENT REPAIR DATES. None of them were correct. The introduction of fiber into the conversation only came when a "repairman" that we never scheduled showed up at his door and tried to sell him upgraded services instead of restoring his ability to communicate with the outside world. We have been given the run around multiple times. And yes, if I learn that everyone else with copper in the building was forced to switch to fiber because of this outage, it would make a difference. If others had their copper service restored - and it seems like they have - then I want my father to be extended the same service.

If anything island needs more cars and more spots there always booked on weekend. Its actually a great service that allows people to access car without paying several hundred dollars a month for parking, maintenance and insurance.

I have been a member for 7-8 years, its great. You might want to try something before commenting

For the most part all Americans are pretty bad at driving, and I think most ny'ers fall into that category.

I don't understand why you think this is a racist statement.all I want to do is welcome our new tenants and make them feel welcome to our island.I think I am doing a blessed think.

Does anyone have any information about the two robberies involving a gun that occurred recently on the 7th floor of 540?

Any word on retail, especially the liquor store? Work had begun on the site some time ago, then stopped while the walkway was being redone. Now, nothing. We remain the only neighborhood in NYC without a wine/ liquor store.

CheshireKitty said...

You can thank Kramer for that - he is so anxious to drive out the non-profits; *that* he has time for, yet he can't find someone to start a liquor store business on RI? He can't find someone although that liquor store would be the only liquor store on the island?

What's the matter with Kramer? Is it that he's asking exorbitant rent and no-one is willing to pay that much? Maybe it's time for Kramer to reconsider the rent he wishes to charge - so we can see more spaces rented on Main St. Trust me, Kramer and H-R can afford to see a reduction in their profits. It's us who suffer and are held hostage by Kramer's greed, with the empty store-fronts he and only he is responsible for.

Meanwhile, Kramer has no problem showing the thrift shop space to prospective new tenants. Kramer should expect a severe and ongoing public outcry on closing the thrift shop. The island is home to many poor people and for them, the thrift shop is one of the few options, the few ways to acquire anything. Also, at the other end of the spectrum, the island is home to a large transient population (hospital residences, UN personnel, etc) that is constantly donating unneeded belongings as they pack up and move to their next assignment or job. If we did not have a thrift shop, which acts as a sort of recycling facility, the volume of goods ultimately going into the garbage stream would be increased - so the thrift shop is good for the environment, good for the poor folks who have a place where they can afford to buy things, and good for all of us, who have a place to donate unneeded belongings while at the same time making a contribution to the important social programs of the Catholic church.

Hi...welp, as it turns out I'm getting my dream trip to NYC in April to see my son perform at Carnegie. I noticed that in years past RI had a cherry blossom festival, usually in mid-April. Are there plans to have one this year? Even if not, is mid-April a good time to come to the Island to see the blossoms? No matter what I'm coming, gotta ride that tram! I'm stll fascinated with this little sliver of NYC!

The same packaged French feta cheese that sells at Fairway for $5.99 goes for $9.99 at Gristede's, but you don't even know that until you check out, because the store hasn't marked the price. All the other, cheaper fetas, are clearly priced. The customer is supposed to think that the French package, being an ounce smaller, will cost less.

CheshireKitty said...

Typical of Gristedes to sell things for about double what they go elsewhere. OTOH, 14 oz of Dodoni Greek feta - the #1 selling brand of feta in Greece, goes for $7.19 @ Costco. I'm assuming the $5.99 price you quoted is per lb. If so, then Fairway's French feta is of course cheaper. However, for those who do not wish to travel into the City, then Costco - only a few steps away - does offer a fine, and fairly decently priced, alternative.

Westviewer said...

The feta I'm talking about is a 7 oz pack.

CheshireKitty said...

Definitely check out the deal at Costco then. Although you will need to join, if you join at the Executive level, then the membership fee is refunded back to you as a store credit at the end of the year.

Westviewer said...

The "deal" isn't the point. French feta is different from Greek (although I like both for different purposes). Costco's quantities are too large for me to store or use.

CheshireKitty said...

Yes, I agree - French feta is different, creamier and somehow more "refined." However for some uses, as in spinach pie, Greek feta might be more suitable as the taste would be more emphatic.

As far as storage of the Dodoni product sold at Costco, it comes in a plastic tub with a positive seal that completely prevents leakage, as the cheese is stored in brine (as traditional in Greece). The brine can be topped off - renewed with water and salt - if it runs low. I only occasionally eat feta, and so I can attest that a package does last a long time without spoilage problems.

I would at least check this product out once, if you are already shopping at Costco; however, if you are not a member/have no interest in joining, then probably it is best to stick with Fairway.

See the fourth paragraph, "But the inconvenient address is the reason this new eating adventure exists. It was built to lure renters to Gotham West, the 1,238-unit apartment complex above and behind it. As any New York
real estate agent can tell you, even buyers who think of themselves as pioneers don’t want to mill corn and slaughter hogs like Pa Ingalls. Gotham West’s developer tried to answer that objection by bringing forth a troop of places to eat in a spot that had almost none"

Too bad there was no such creative thinking here.

CONSUMER ALERT! As much as we enjoy the presence of Wholesome Factory on RI, be warned that many of the products they sell are past the "best by" date. Check all diary products you purchase.

Though not directly related to the island, we've got a lot of politically minded people here. I just want to point out de blasio's most recent move negatively impacting new york city public schools - killing 3 charter schools that were set to open in Harlem, Lower Manhattan, and Jamaica. Anyone wanting the best for their kids (without the luxury of paying a fantastic amount for it) should not be happy with the direction de blasio is taking new york city education. He's also halting the opening of additional public schools, but that seems so crazy to me I'll wait for more information before passing judgement on that.
New people on the island, many with kids, education is concern. If NYC schools get worse I think most of us will find alternatives (I hear New Jersey Transit is making improvements...) and the only one left on the island will be Bill. We're stuck with this dope de blasio for a few years, so expect things to get worse.

Mark Lyon said...

These actions make the teachers happy, though. Shouldn't that be enough? ;)

KTG said...

Well DiBlasio is primary campaign donor and support team was "Working Families Party" which is actually a front for Teachers Union and a few other ACORN related groups DiBlasio had worked for in the past.

Since the teachers union hates the challenge to status quo that came from charters this is natural move. Next they look to push back on any compensation or retention based on student performance that Bloomberg implemented.

OldRossie said...

So de blasio's position was purchased, effectively. And from what I can tell, the only people hurt by the charter schools are the teachers' union. Conversely, the only people hurt by de blasio, are kids and taxpayers.
