Another Roosevelt Island Westview Building Burglary Last Friday - Unlocked Apartment Door Again, $1700 Worth Of Items Stolen

A second burglary at Roosevelt Island's Westview building

within the last week.

Reported last April 29:
04/28/14 - 1812 - 625 Main St. - Burglary - Referred to NYPD.
Commenting on the 4/28 Westview burglary, a reader wrote last Friday, May 2
NYPD just rang my bell and told me there was a burglary in the apartment next door (595, Westview) while the guy was sleeping between 11am - 2pm. They took a lap top and something else (I think it was his wallet) The officer asked if I heard anything, but I wasn't home at the time. The officer asked me to call NYPD, not public safety, if I see anyone who doesn't belong.
The Roosevelt Island Public Safety Department described the incident as:
05/02/14 - 1314 - 595 Main St. - Missing property - Search made with negative results.
A NYPD Spokesperson said that a tenant at 595 Main Street left their apartment door unlocked and items worth more than $1700 were stolen.

Roosevelt Island Public Safety Director Jack McManus adds:
Westview Burglary. Female tenant comes home to find things out of order. Purse, ipad and phone missing. Once again, no sign of forced entry.
It's hard to understand why some Roosevelt Island apartment doors remain unlocked.

Since four freedoms park opened there have been quite a few times I have either been there until closing or arrived half hour before closing. In both cases I am regularly asked to leave 15-30 minutes before closing and usually the gate is locked before closing time. The staff there are generally very rude in these requests.

On top of this we used to have access to this island land at least until 30 minutes past dusk, and often 24 hours. It is frustrating to see this place now locked down more than half the time.

I have start meeting and talking with the people kicked out or refused entry and would like to pass along a request to four freedoms park facilitators and RIOC that the park remain open for 24 hours or at least until midnight. They pay a security guard to sit there anyway. Attached are photos of a couple of the people I ran into who were refused entry last Sunday at around 6:50. I plan on spending some time down at the park at closing time and photographing and talking with all the people who are turned away from a place they used to have access to.

I find it ironic that a park named "four freedoms" is the embodiment of just the opposite. They should rename it the "four restrictions", no food, no bikes, no view, and no access, there logo and iron bars certainly are fitting for it.

I hope they know more about wine than they do about food...or, at least and maybe preferably, are willing to employ a manager who is experienced and knowledgeable.

Has it occurred to you that it takes time to have people move on out, especially from the end tip?. By the time they walk to the gate it's probably 10-15 after.

Do they close the promenade, or the city sidewalks, or the bridges ever? What is it about parks that requires operating hours or shows they are so much more dangerous than anywhere else? If someone doesn't feel safe in the park they don't have to go. The FDR park closes early because the conservancy is worried about vandals damaging their edifice and they don't have the funds to keep it open longer with 4 staff who stand around and do nothing. I didn't create the expensive and sensitive graffiti palettes and there wasn't a problem before it was built. Most NYC parks are open from sunrise to 1 AM http://www.nycgovparks.org/about

Isn't it common sense not to climb those walls? It's the first thing I told my kids when they attempted to do so. This is not a park to do such a thing.

It's one way to prevent vandalism. It's not perfect for you and all the people you have met with, but in the end it's up to the folks running the park.
