Roosevelt Island resident Lauren Blankstein also describes a Roosevelt Island Tram ride experience:
Dear Diary:

I have lived on Roosevelt Island for nine years and the ride back and forth, to and from mainland Manhattan, never disappoints. As the tram pulls out of the station on Second Avenue, the buzz of the city falls away and passengers are treated to a quiet four-minute crossing to a little island that is often misunderstood.

I was on my way home one spring afternoon when I overheard a young woman who was sitting on the bench at the rear of the tram talking on her cellphone.

“I’ve lived in New York all these years and this is my first time on the Roosevelt Island trolley car,” she said with excitement. As the tram hovered over the F.D.R. approaching the East River she yelled into the phone: “Wait, we are about to go over the water … I may lose cell reception!”
Ms Blankstein's story was published in the NY Times Metropolitan Diary Tales From The City earlier this week.

The Tram is getting way over crowded with tourists.

What a cheesy show. Do people watch this every day? They could at least get some facts straight before they went on the air.

I couldn't even watch the entire first video it was so bad. Honestly, the worst piece I've seen in a long time. What a lost opp for RI.

I thought the hosts would apologize for the mess in part 1 but they just rehashed the same thing again focusing once more on Grandpa Munster and SJP. What a waste of everything to have such a thing being broadcasted.

Eh, that's about the level of alot of TV news these days - half shtick half news. I suppose the fact that RI got a mention - a segment even - is a plus. RIOC could make available brochures about RI at the Manhattan tram station so that tourists could get some information about our landmarks/parks/etc - in case they want to tour the island once they get there. They could even provide flyers on attractions/fairs/events such as Eleanor's Pier, film showings, concerts etc.

The president and director do not allow PSD officers to perform in a law enforcement role.

As a former Psd officer,I can personally say it's not the directors fault, but the presidents. I know that if McManus was able to,he would turn Psd into a full service police department. A FULL SERVICE POLICE DEPARTMENT. For those that don't know what that is,look it up. Sadly,McManus is the Chief of the department, but pretty much has no say and must run EVERYTHING by the RIOC president. That's not effective law enforcement. I respect her for what experience she does have, which is a lot. But NONE of it is in law enforcement. Chief McManus is the one with tons of experience in law enforcement. Not only that,he was a very high ranking officer in the world's largest police department. To me that means a lot,and if I was rioc president, I would let McManus run the department the way he thinks it should be run.and with the recent upward trend of crime on the island,I would definitely let McManus run the department the way he feels. Indelicato field of expertise is really estate. McManus is law enforcement. Let the people do what they know. Technically, I'm more of a law enforcement expert then the president

OVERSEEING means in civil service terms... Ok chief, just keep doing what your doing. Let me know if anything is going on.

You wouldn't know that.

Thank you notmykid, that's pretty much what I was going to say. Kitty, your making it seem like she ran the new Rochelle police department. My point again is that MCMANUS is the law enforcement expert and his hands shouldn't be tied by someone that isn't a law enforcement expert. Instead of saying Here is what I want your people doing and here is what I don't want them doing. The islands population is growing, and is only going to continue to grow. Roosevelt island will NEVER EVER have its own nypd precinct. It's to close to the 114 pct for the city to basically have two precincts a mile away from each other. They will simply add more officers to the 114 pct to help with the added call volume from Roosevelt island. Very simple. So it's either you fix the department you have on the island which has pretty much been diluted to a security firm with arrest powers,or you get rid of Psd all together, pray that nypd drives up and down main street once per tour if your lucky and watch crime spike on Roosevelt island.

And please don't come back with the oh we pay taxes, nypd should patrol more. Yes you pay taxes and those taxes do go towards the nypd, but with over 8 million people in NYC,the amount that actually pay taxes, with the amount of money that nypd get from homeland security, the amount of money that you pay on taxes that scrutiny goes towards the nypd probably pays for the salary of 3 nypd officers. Point being Roosevelt island doesn't contribute enough to dictate what the nypd doesn't or does do. Get what I'm saying.

Roosevelt island now has a great, honest, very smart president and a Psd chief that is also very smart, capable, law enforcement expert. Take advantage of both of these people and fix your department before it's to late. Only way you will get more nypd is if crime on the island becomes a problem for the statistics of the 114 pct. Then nypd will come on the island, enforce ALL laws and no one will like it. And you can't simply walk into the 114 pct and ask to speak to the commander. You will be lucky if you get to the desk Sgt.

Good day
