A fun filled Roosevelt Island tradition continues with the upcoming 2014 Fall For Arts Festival scheduled to take place Saturday, October 11 at Southpoint Park.

According to the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC):

On Saturday, October 11th 2014, the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation will present the annual Fall for Arts Festival on Roosevelt Island. We are seeking artists or groups to each paint one of several 6-by-8-foot murals outdoors during the Festival.

Through the years, this celebration of creativity and the changing seasons has become a much-loved tradition for children and adults alike. This year, our theme is “A Multicultural Renaissance,” celebrating Roosevelt Island’s diversity and invoking the magic and artistic sensibilities of medieval times. One of the event’s most unique and well-loved traditions is a combination of performance art and traditional painting: the creation of free-standing murals outdoors during the Festival. All participating artists will receive a free 2014 t-shirt.

When: Saturday, October 11th, 10 AM – 4 PM

Where: Southpoint Park & the lawn south of 531 Main Street, Roosevelt Island NY 10044

How to Apply: We invite you to submit a sketch of your design or any inquiries to Anna.Rankin@rioc.ny.gov along with a title and short description. Sketches should be sized according to a 6 x 8 ratio.

Submission Deadline: September 26th, 2014

Participation in this event is free; paints, brushes, and a primed surface are provided! All participating artists will also receive a free festival t-shirt. Once complete, murals will stay on display at the parks for several weeks. Selected works will be displayed at the Island’s Motorgate Gallery through late 2015. All artworks will remain the property of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation and may be displayed on Roosevelt Island to beautify the community in the future.

We welcome your participation and creativity – good luck!

of Goldwater Hospital.

According to the Cornell NYC Tech Roosevelt Island construction update:

Image Of Cornell NYC Tech Demolition Of Goldwater Hospital Yesterday
August 29 - September 12 Look Ahead

Façade removal is complete on Building C. All façade material has been packaged and removed from the site by barge. Structural demolition of the remaining columns and slabs will continue over the next two weeks until the building is fully demolished. Sorting of the rubble is ongoing. Some of the material will be recycled and some will be crushed and remain on site.

Work will soon begin on Building F, the northernmost building. Due to proximity to the street, scaffolding was erected adjacent to the building to allow workers to hand demolish the northern portions of the façade. Mechanical means will be used for the southern portions of the building.

The roof abatement work on Building B is finished and the building is now ready for structural demolition. Work is ongoing in Building E with interior demolition taking place on the lower floors.

The construction fence has been relocated to its intended and approved location in the southwest corner. As detailed in the August 6th posting, tree protection measures are being implemented and the fence move will have no impact on the current discussions with RIOC and the community about the future of the trees on this corner of the site.

Barges can be expected 2-3 times per week to maintain the flow of construction debris removal.
More details on Cornell NYC Tech demolition procedures of Roosevelt Island's Goldwater Hospital at this August 25 previous post.

Crowdsourcing Opinions On Roosevelt Island Uber Mobile App Car Service - Overwhelmingly Positive Except For Upper East Side Drivers, Local Uber Drivers From Long Island City And Astoria More Reliable

Have you used the Uber car service mobile app?

Image From Uber

According to Uber:
Uber uses your phone's GPS to detect your location and connects you with the nearest available driver. Get picked up anywhere — even if you don't know the exact address.

When you request a ride, we’ll find a driver and let you track their location on the map. Feel free to put away your phone – we’ll text you when your ride arrives. Your driver’s name and car details appear in the app, and you can message or call if you need to.

View rates for your city in the app. You can also enter your pickup and drop-off locations to get a fare quote for your trip.

You don't need cash when you ride with Uber. Once you arrive at your destination, your fare is automatically charged to your credit card on file – no need to tip. We’ll also e-mail you a receipt.

Drivers not only meet Uber’s standards, they meet your standards. After your trip, you can rate your experience and leave additional feedback about your driver.
How useful is Uber for traveling to and from Roosevelt Island? The Roosevelt Island Twitterverse reports:

Last June, I asked Roosevelt Islanders about their Uber experience and learned from Diana:
We love Uber. Wonderful service and fast. Especially from airports. No more standing in line to get a taxi!

I believe prices are about the same. But overall experience is way better. All the drivers we had so far were very kind and friendly. You get to choose what kind/size car you want. The cars belong to the drivers and they keep them very clean and don't drive as crazy as taxi drivers. As I mentioned, no need to wait in line at the airport. You just open the app and request a car and within minutes you're on your way home. And you can also use it in other cities and countries.

And all the payment is done seamlessly through the app (using credit card) so you don't have to deal with cash or worrying about having enough.

At the end of your route you get a receipt via email with the route map and time you've taken to your destination.
Derek:
I use Uber all the time from the Octagon. I usually use UberT and it's the same prices as metered taxi. UberX is sometimes a little better prices because of no meter fees. Always available, always on time and very convenient because you can watch the car arrive on the map so you know when to go down.
Jonathan:
Had a great experience first time I used them from here to go to LGA day after Xmas. Waited 10 min for a green cab and it was flawless.
and Kwame:
I use the Uber T service quite often and the taxi fare is the same as hailing a yellow cab. The only annoyance I have with Uber is that they must send the call signal to taxis on the UES. Usually, I get a couple of calls from the drivers telling me that they are on the UES and that they are not coming to RI. Typically, after the 3rd request, I'll get a cab closer to RI.
I asked Kwame:
Do you know if Uber send signal to taxi drivers in Long Island City/Astoria as well?
Kwame replied:
Yes, they do the signal to LIC/Astoria. Usually, I'm requesting Ubers at 1/2 am, so maybe more Ubers are on the UES. But I have a feeling that Uber incorporates the borough location into the request system and Roosevelt Island is considered Manhattan. I could be wrong about that.
Yesterday, I asked for an update by Roosevelt Island Uber users. From Diana:
I wrote my positive review the first time, but they had made some pricing changes lately - and now it's cheaper than a yellow taxi.
Kwame:
Yup. It's a pretty good service. The only issue that I have is that sometimes for an RI pickup the app hails cabs from the Upper East Side rather than Queens. But, once a driver cancels, the app finds another taxi.
and Derek:
I have had great experiences with Uber in the past..... lately though, I've had the same problems described here. The drivers that answer the request have been on the upper east side, so I try again or they cancel. I think Uber needs to re-organize it's "zones" so that it can recognize when a request is coming from RI. I had to do something old-fashioned recently and call Olympic for a car because I was wasting too much time trying to get an Uber from Queens. I paid $43 for a ride that would cost about $28 on Uber!
Newcomers to the Roosevelt Island Uber discussion have similar things to say. From Kristy:
Yes! Love it! Cheaper than yellow taxi and I can hail one via app any time of day.
Niki:
L-O-V-E! We have taken it both to and from the Island, (lower west, Brooklyn, midtown, airport, etc.) all positive experiences with friendly, professional drivers. Also one morning our scheduled airport sedan with dial7 was 10min late, we finally got through & they said that the driver messed up and was delayed, he would be another 15min! So I pulled out my UBER & they quoted 6min so I told Dial7 to forget it and waited for UBER, they were here in under 6min & saved the day!
Emily:
I love UBER and have had success taking it from the island but I've also had issues with drivers who are in manhattan picking up my request and then canceling when they realize where they have to go. Usually there are enough drivers in queens that I get one eventually, but it can take a little longer sometimes.
Marc:
I've had positive experiences using UBER, having taken it both to and from the island. As others have mentioned, at times it will get cabs from the UES, but I normally cancel (or the driver calls and cancels) and the 'local' ones closer in Queens/Astoria comes closer. Its also usually cheaper than a regular cab and convenient to use via the app.
and Caitlin
UBER is great! I haven't used the app going to/from Roosevelt Island but we did use them during our move to Brooklyn when we were picking up furniture off Cragislist. We just called for an UBER suv and we never had any problems. They work off of good reviews but we always tipped them with cash if we were moving something large/heavy.
I asked Caitlin:
What about tipping Uber drivers?
Caitlin replied:
Tip is included in the quoted cost. What drivers really want is a good review! Drivers can also review you as a customer. I think this is why UBER drivers are UBER nice!

Roosevelt Island Is Least Smelly Neighborhood In Manhattan Says Report On New York City's Most And Least Odorous Neighborhoods

How smelly is Roosevelt Island compared to the rest of New York City? The NYC real estate web site Brick Underground says Roosevelt Island is the least smelly of all Manhattan neighborhoods

According to Brick Underground:

... we asked apartment data site AddressReport to crunch the numbers on the most and least fragrant 'hoods in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens....
and
... Some notes on methodology: the site took a look at the frequency of 311 complaints for different odor-related issues in every neighborhood, then weighted the frequency of complaints by the neighborhood's population....
concluding:
... quiet and relatively removed areas like Roosevelt Island, Brooklyn Heights, and Woodside come out smelling (relatively) like roses....

Of all the Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens neighborhoods, only Brooklyn's Starrett City was less smelly than Roosevelt Island according to the report.

Report From Roosevelt Island Residents Association President Jeff Escobar - Looks Back At RI Summer And Forward To Upcoming Elections, Urges Residents To Get Involved And Help Improve Community

Image of RIRA President Jeff Escobar From CB 8 Speaks Video

Roosevelt Island Residents Association (RIRA) President Jeff Escobar sends the following Report To The Community:
As the summer draws to a close and we, as a community, squeeze out the last bit of summer fun this Labor Day, I encourage all of us to come together, look ahead and plot a course of action for our community and for RIRA. As I have stated in prior columns, this year is an election year for the RIRA Common Council officers and members, and in the fall we will be effectively setting the community agenda for the next two years. Who chooses to run and who we, as a community, elect to represent our interests and to be our community advocates from that slate of candidates will have a deep impact on where our little ship in the East River is headed.

If you have been tracking Island news these past few months, not only has this summer brought to light a number of issues within our local community operating corporation and its Board that governs the operations and services of our Island, a number of quality of life issues have arisen as well. From the release of the Inspector General’s reports on the past activities of prior RIOC administrations to an increase in petty crime on the Island to the eroding of public services and facilities, it would seem to some that our idyllic island is idyllic no more and that our way of Island life has slowly melted in the summer sun.

Except, the blaze of the summer sun was not as hot as in summers past, new families and new faces continue to move to the Island while we say goodbye to old neighbors, old buildings and new buildings continue the slow march of being torn down and being built, movies in the park were still had (although moved around), concerts at the Good Shepherd Community Center continued, and visitors still continue to flock to the Island tram to take that one picture. In short and despite the naysayers of the few, the rhythm of life continued and continues on the Island, albeit in differing tempos and in differing tones than before.

During the Candidates Night hosted this past summer by RIRA’s Government Relations Committee and its Legislative Subcommittee, what is abundantly clear is that what our Island is seeking are more community advocates willing to understand and to represent the Island both within the Island itself and to the greater City and State. Issues such as infrastructure, crime, public safety, population growth, public services, repair and maintenance of facilities, and security continue to pervade our Island. The commencement of the construction of the Cornell campus and the topping off of the first of the new Related towers represent just a fraction of Island issues that require attention and resolution. Although in the next few months, the RIRA Common Council will attempt to address these issues, it will be you, the next class of Island leadership, officers and Common Council members who will be elected in November who will set the agenda and tone for the pivotal years to come.

Whether you are newbie or a veteran of the Island, young or old, working or retired, the RIRA Common Council needs your fresh and innovative ideas, professional expertise and dedication to preserving our way of life to breathe new life into RIRA. Not sure if it’s really for you? Come to our Fall session this September 10th at 8:00pm at the
Good Shepard Community Center, introduce yourselves, ask questions and become engaged. For the only way we, as a community, have a fighting chance of preserving our way of Island life is if each of us have a hand in its future.

Won’t you run for RIRA Common Council?

A Wonderful Roosevelt Island F Train Subway Station Story - A Visiting Mom, New RI Resident From China & Intriguing Accents Meet

Cindy Harrington Napier is visiting her daughter Carman who lives on Roosevelt Island. Ms. Napier shares her experience yesterday meeting another young Roosevelt Island resident while waiting for the F Train at the Roosevelt Island subway station platform.

Ms. Napier writes:
Waiting for the F train this morning at 7:10a.m., I was alone and a young woman approached me. She extended her hand and introduced herself. Her accent was heavy and I couldn't understand her name.

I asked if she had lived on the Island very long. She said yes, then no, telling me she had been here two weeks and was attending NYU. She then told me about growing up in China, her parents (who speak no English) and living alone for the first time.

After the longest pause since our meeting, she says,"I want to be like you and speak with no accent so people will think I'm American. How long do you think that will take?" I laughed and said," You just can't hear my accent. I don't know that you want to get rid of it entirely."

She offered,"Someone said accents are sexy." I looked at this fresh, young naive face. My reply,"Yes they can be sexy. But they are intriguing. You want men or women to want to know your story, make them ponder over where you grew up, what makes you unique. "

We boarded the train and as I got off I wished her luck. She grinned, "I'll make them want to know my story." I replied,"They will."

Kind of intense for an early morning conversation, but a reminder of the yearnings of youth. Oh yes, she going to try and see Carman in "Next to Normal",  took down theater and dates. I am ever the Mom Manager.

Wish I could just travel and collect stories.

NYC Planning Commission Chairman Carl Weisbrod May Be A Little Bit Happier Today - Roosevelt Island Wine Shop Closer To Opening, Announces Sales Positions Available For New Store

Site of New Roosevelt Island Liquor Store And Former Home of the Grog Wine Shop

Reported January 29, 2014:
...During the January 14 meeting of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) Real Estate Development Advisory Committee (audio web cast here), Main Street Retail Master Leaseholder David Kramer of Hudson Related provided an update on the status of Main Street retail.

Mr. Kramer began the update by reporting that he recently met Roosevelt Island resident and Mayor DeBlasio's Transition Chairman Carl Weisbrod. Mr. Weisbrod's first words to Mr. Kramer were:

When are we getting our wine store?
Mr. Kramer expects the Wine Shop to open soon. The Wine Shop is owned by the same owner as the Wholesome Factory organic grocer on Main Street. The Wine Shop lease was signed over two years ago, they are current on their rent, have their liquor license and are in process of getting building permit....
(Mr. Weisbrod is now Chair of the NYC Planning Commission.)

It looks like the new Roosevelt Island Wine Shop is just a little bit closer to finally opening. An advertisement was placed August 18 on Craigslist for sales positions at the Roosevelt Island Wine Store. According to Craigslist:
Manhattan style, Island appeal. New wine and spirits store on Roosevelt Island is now hiring for sales positions.

Must have understanding of wines, regions, and producers, plus spirits categories and brands. Retail experience necessary; customer focus is key. This is a full-time position with responsibility for all aspects of a store. For high-performing, savvy individuals with passion.

Store location is convenient; minutes from F-train station on Roosevelt Island...

During July 30 Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) Real Estate Advisory Committee meeting (full audio web cast of meeting here), Main Street Master Leaseholder Hudson Related's David Kramer said again that the wine store will open soon.

The Craigslist Sales Position ad is a good sign that the Roosevelt Island Wine Store will open soon.
