It sounds like the Governor must have ordered these NYS parks to remain open for the July 4th celebration, since both FFP and RIOC had said the properties would be closed for July 4th at the OAC meeting, if I'm not mistaken.

It would have looked strange politically for RIOC to have just hosted the Hillary Clinton campaign kickoff event at the same parks - with thousands of people safely pouring in and exiting, but not make the parks available for the "democratic" "people's" celebration of American Independence. I'm not sure Cuomo would have wanted to explain why it was OK to have had thousands safety attend the campaign kickoff event but not OK to have thousands view the fireworks on July 4th. Yes, police overtime will be involved to make sure people are safe @ the event - but the same is true throughout the fireworks viewing area every year - and somehow people do manage to squeeze into the waterfront area or onto the FDR drive to view the show and then slowly make their way back to the train or their cars for the return trip home. The juxtaposition of the campaign kickoff event, where it was deemed OK or safe to accommodate thousands at the parks, vs. July 4th, where the same State agency decided it was not OK to accommodate thousands - as well as the flap over the self-anointed political leadership of RI (Katz & Helstein) complaining about the campaign kickoff event being held on RI because it was held on the same day as RI Day - would have simply supplied even more fodder for the conservative press, and rightly so. I can just see the headlines: Governor to New Yorkers: No viewing from the patriotic FFP of the patriotic 7/4 fireworks - continues the "tone-deaf" "tradition" started by Helstein & Katz of yanking away the welcome mat from those wishing to visit RI.

Thank goodness Cuomo had the good sense to allow viewing of the fireworks from FFP & SPP this year. This may buy him some goodwill - some political capital - which he sorely needs, since he blew so much of it with his recent pro-conservative pro-developer pro-millionaire moves this year (thankfully, not all of which became law). They call some Republicans RINOs - Republicans in Name Only. Well, they should coin a corresponding term or Democrats - DINOs - Democrats in Name Only. The Dem acronym is particularly fitting - as it also can refer to dinosaurs/gigantic, slow-moving, and backward-thinking reptiles.
