Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Roosevelt Island Tram

Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at 1:00 PM
Tram Plaza, Roosevelt Island

Join your friends and neighbors as we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Roosevelt Island tram’s maiden voyage, on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at 1:00 PM at Tram Plaza.

Co-sponsored by the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC) and the Roosevelt Island Historical Society (RIHS), festivities will include a ceremonial re-enactment of the first tram ride and a salute to longtime tram staff. The commemoration will also feature speeches by local leaders, a performance by the PS/IS 217 band and refreshments.

A very special part of the event will be a display of model trams decorated by the children of Roosevelt Island.

The celebration continues beyond Tram Plaza with a showcase of the RIHS collection of tram art and memorabilia in the window of the former hardware store at 544 Main Street.

Be sure to stop by the Visitor Center Kiosk for a wonderful selection of tram-themed, Roosevelt Island and New York City merchandise, including the just-released Roosevelt Island coloring book. These make great gifts.

Bring your friends, family and your memories as we mark this truly special occasion!

This event is FREE and open to the public.
DIRECTIONS: Take the Tram at 59th Street and Second Avenue or the F train to Roosevelt Island.

RIHS thanks Susan Rosenthal, Lynne Strong-Shinozaki, Janet Falk, RIOC and the Tram staff for their help in arranging this memorable day. We extend special appreciation to Gristedes for its generous donation of refreshments and Riverwalk Bar & Grill for contributing the tram cake.
RIOC looks back with some old Tram pictures.
