Roosevelt Island Marlins Swim Team Athletes Continue To Work Hard This Summer - Compete In NYC Metropolitan Area 2016 Junior Olympics

Roosevelt Island Marlins Swim Team Head Coach Michael Gavrilchin reports:

As the world anticipates Rio Olympics opening next week, we are proud to cheer for our own Roosevelt Island Swim Team athletes, competing at the 2016 Junior Olympics! This swimming championship has gathered every elite swimmer from over 150 swim clubs of Metropolitan Area (Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island, Westchester, Upstate New York, Nassau County, Suffolk County of Long Island). The Roosevelt Island Marlins Swim Team had eight Junior Olympics qualifiers; five of them have competed at the Eisenhower Aquatic Center on July 22-24, showing outstanding results. We congratulate Emir Emre, Mira Goodman, Denys Mialkoskyi, Matija Prokic, and Sophia Shchuchinov!

Emir Emre, Mira Goodman, Denys Mialkovskyi, and Matija Prokic all set personal best records! Sophia Shchuchinov captured 6th Place in 200 Breaststroke, set personal best times in 5 events and earned a spot in 2016 Metropolitan Swim Team. She will represent Roosevelt Island as a part of Metro Team at 2016 Eastern Zone Swimming Championship (August 3-6) which will gather the best swimmers from twelve Eastern States. Sophia will compete at the biggest Age Group competition of the year in 3 events: 50M Breaststroke, 100M Breaststroke and 200M Breaststroke. We wish her best of luck at the upcoming Championship!

While most of our swimmers are already vacationing, we have athletes that haven’t dared to take even a day off during the summer, continuing to improve their technique and results. They have shown their dedication and determination by choosing to spend their evenings in the pool. Since day one, I have seen their drive to improve and their passion for swimming. These athletes have worked hard to finish the long course season strong, as well as improve their stroke technique and build up their endurance for the upcoming season!

Looking forward to another great year at the pool.

New Cafe, Juice Bar & Sandwich Shop With Outdoor Seating Coming To Roosevelt Island's Main Street - Lease Signed Says Hudson Related

We worried it might not ever happen again, but we were wrong.

Main Street Retail Master Leaseholder Hudson Related reports that a new lease has been signed for the long empty space at 503 Main Street.

The new tenant will operate a Cafe/Juice Bar/Sandwich Shop. No cooking will be allowed in the premises due to the Rivercross Building denying permission.

There will be outdoor seating but the store wall facing Rivercross lawn will remain.

Some residents had hoped that the wall could be replaced by windows opening up to the Rivercross lawn.

The new Cafe, Juice Bar & Sandwich Shop is owned by the same owner as Wholesome Factory

and Island Wines.

Expected opening is next summer.

Maybe Trellis will open by that time too.

Stay tuned for more.

UPDATE 6:10 PM - Hudson Related adds:
Hudson Related Retail LLC has signed a lease for a café/juice bar to be located at 503 Main Street. The tenant already owns two successful businesses on Main Street, Wholesome Factory and Island Wine & Spirits. The café will serve juices, smoothies, and light fare such as paninis, salads, and bakery items. Opening is anticipated for summer 2017.

Extremely Hot NYC Weather Today - Roosevelt Island Cooling Center Open Until 9 PM With Assistance From RI CERT Team, It's Available So Don't Be Bashful To Use It

Another extremely hot day today. Heat index 100-105 in NYC.

The Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) reports:
As a reminder, the Roosevelt Island Cooling Center, located at 546 Main St., will be open Sunday and Monday, July 24 July 25, from 9 AM- 9 PM when the National Weather Service issues a Heat Advisory for the New York City area.

This advisory is issued for New York City area when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is at least 95 degrees for two consecutive days, or 100 degrees for any length of time.

Individuals without air conditioning, particularly those at risk for heat-related illness, should use established cooling centers during a heat wave.
Roosevelt Island resident and Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) member Frank Farance adds:
RI CERT team is providing additional coverage at cooling center 5PM to 9PM so people can stay later.

RI Cert Team Gwen Ryals, Frank Farance, Angela Grant At RI Cooling Center

We've been providing the extra converge at the cooling center since Friday, and will be there through this Wednesday.

Over the weekend, we found out that because CERT was at the cooling center, Public Safety was able to use its resources elsewhere, such as Lighthouse Park, to make sure things were quiet on Roosevelt Island. In my opinion, that's exactly the kind of stuff CERT was designed for: providing coverage so police/fire can go do other jobs that ONLY police/fire can do.

Us CERT volunteers were very happy to provide relief for our neighbors, there were several people who really really needed to be out of the heat.

If you have a neighbor who needs some cooling, e.g., they don't have air conditioning (or don't use it), encourage them to come to the cooler center, even just for an hour, to get some relief. There is a chilled water cooler there, too.

Everyone, please check on your neighbors. It's not just seniors, we had some 20-year-olds come in, too. Don't feel bashful. :-)
Great job by the RI Cert team in helping our neighbors stay safe and cool during this heat spell.
