UPDATE 10:40 PM - RIOC Public Information Officer Alonza Robertson provides an update:
There was a fire this afternoon on the 9th floor of 10 River Road at the Manhattan Park residential complex on Main Street on Roosevelt Island at 5:30 p.m.

Some 25 FDNY and NYPD emergency vehicles responded to the incident. The cause of the fire appears to be electrical.

There were no reported injuries in the apartment nor in the rest of the building. The tenant was not home at the time of the fire, however there was a cat in the apartment that died due to apparent smoke inhalation, said Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation Public Safety Director Jack McManus.

Both inbound and outbound traffic to Roosevelt Island was frozen for one hour, McManus said.

Additionally, the area around Manhattan Park, as well as the area in front of NYC PS/IS 217, was traffic gridlocked due to the responding emergency vehicles blocking Main Street in both directions. Island bus service was affected as well.

The FDNY and NYPD first responders began leaving the Island at 6:45 p.m. Island buses were back in service picking up passengers 20 minutes later.

Island traffic (inbound and outbound) resumed without delay by 7:30 p.m., McManus said.

is curating and playing in the Roosevet Island International Jazz Day Celebration. Mr. Kurien reports:
Gallery RIVAA will host its second annual International Jazz Day Celebration - Jam Session on Sunday April 29th as part of the world wide celebration of International Jazz Day.

Last year was a tremendous success when on April 30th,2017 we celebrated, for the first time International Jazz Day on Roosevelt Island at Gallery RIVAA- the home of art (and now Jazz) on Roosevelt Island.

This was a true jam session format, and lineups kept rotating all evening.. We had about 15 musicians that came (representing the world ) and included folks whose origins included exotic international locations such as Detroit , Texas, Indiana, Astor Place NY, Argentina , France via italy , Brooklyn, Japan, Madagascar, the UK, the Russian Federation, India and more !

- Truly International ! and inspiring.

Jazz is international music that has no boundaries and has the power to bind us together, not divide. it speaks a universal language and to universal truths. There has been no war that has been fought over jazz (except over too many beers while arguing Ron Carter over Jaco, or post-bop vs swing!).
Check out the scene

Visitor Makes A Very Well Done Short Travel Documentary On Roosevelt Island - A Welcome Escape From Hustle And Bustle Of Manhattan

According to The World Is One:
The Roosevelt Island Tramway which has been in operation since 1976. It is one of the attractions for tourists in New York. Roosevelt Island is tiny river island surrounded by the East River flowing between the Boroughs of Manhattan and Queens.

This island was known for its hospitals and prisons during the 19th Century and was called "the Welfare Island". Today, it is largely a residential island. Although the Island is part of the Borough of Manhattan, it is distinct from Manhattan in many ways. Roosevelt Island is a quiet place with a minimal commercial centres and restaurants and hardly any traffic. But it is cosmopolitan in nature and is home to people of several nationalities, many of whom work at the United Nations. It is known for affordable housing, parks for children, plenty of greenery and picturesque views of New York from all sides. One of the attractions is the leisurely walk around the entire island during which you can see the Lighthouse, The Octagon Tower, ruins of the Smallpox Hospital, the Blackwell House and the Chapel of the Good Shepherd. Roosevelt Island is indeed a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan!
Nicely Done.
