2018 Roosevelt Island Fall For Arts Festival Saturday October 6 - RIOC Seeking Artists To Paint Outdoor Murals Depicting Theme Of Exploring Your Freedom: Uniting A Nation - Friday September 14 Deadline To Apply

The annual Roosevelt Island Fall For Arts Festival is scheduled for Saturday October 6. According to the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC):

On Saturday, October 6, 2018, the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC) will present its annual Fall for Arts Festival on Roosevelt Island.

Through the years, this celebration of creativity and the changing seasons has become a much-loved tradition for children and adults alike, featuring hands-on arts-and-crafts workshops for children and adults, amusements, and live entertainment.

One of the event’s most well-loved traditions is a combination of performance and traditional arts through the outdoor artwork creation: the making of free-standing murals during the Festival. This year, our theme is “Exploring Your Freedom: Uniting a Nation”.

We are looking for artists to create works of art that express your ideals, fears, and hopes of the future.

We are seeking artists or groups to each paint one of several 6’ high by 8’ long and 6’ high by 16’ long murals outdoors during the Festival, which will be held from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Island’s Southpoint Park and FDR Four Freedoms State Park, as well as on the lawn south of Rivercross, 501 Main St. Artists are free to arrange an earlier time to begin their work, if needed.

How to Apply: We invite you to submit a sketch of your design or any inquiries along with a title and short description of the concept and technical method. Sketches should be sized according to a 6’ high x 8’ long or 6’ high x 16’ long ratio and submitted in jpeg, PDF or hard copy format. Please submit your sketches no later than Friday, September 14 to jessica.murray@rioc.ny.gov.

Participation in this event is free; basic paints, brushes, and a primed surface are provided! All participating artists will also receive a free festival t-shirt. Once complete, murals will stay on display on the lawn for several weeks.

Once removed from the lawn, selected works will be displayed at the Island’s Motorgate Atrium Gallery through late 2019. All artwork will remain the property of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation and may be displayed on Roosevelt Island to beautify the community in the future.

We welcome your participation and creativity – good luck!

Roosevelt Island Remembers 9/11 NYC World Trade Center Towers Attack, 17 Years Ago Today

Today is the 17th Anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center Towers, the Pentagon and the downing of Flight 93 in Shanksville Pennsylvania.
Here's what the World Trade Center attacks looked like from Roosevelt Island on September 11, 2001 (from Main Street Wire).

Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) Public Information Officer Alonza Robertson wrote yesterday:
Consider visiting the Survivor's Tree on Roosevelt Island as part of tomorrow's 9/11 commemoration activities.

The tree is found behind Good Shepherd Plaza, 543 Main Street, where a plaque memorializes both residents and members of the FDNY Special Operations Command, stationed here on Roosevelt Island, that died during the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center September 11, 2001.

The Roosevelt Island tree was a sapling gift - from the citizens of Oklahoma City - from the original Survivor Tree, the 100-year-old elm that stood in the middle of a parking lot, surrounded by concrete and cars, outside the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building.

While some folks enjoyed parking under the limited shade of its limbs, others thought it was an eyesore. Not much went into caring for this tree — until it was the only thing left standing after the terrorist truck bombing.

On April 19, 1995, a 4,000-pound bomb exploded at the federal building, killing 168 people, injuring hundreds and destroying multiple buildings. But this tree, amid the explosion and fires, survived.

It was almost cut down to recover evidence embedded in its trunk and limbs, but the community, survivors and rescue workers all came together to protect the tree as a symbol of resilience. Today, the tree thrives as part of a national memorial, surrounded by special features that protect and highlight it.

The Survivor Trees, in both Oklahoma City and Roosevelt Island, stand as a living reminder of survival and rebirth.
This morning, Roosevelt Island's local NYPD 114 precinct
remembered 9/11.
We'll always remember

and honor those who died

and protect us.
