Roosevelt Island Restaurant Update - Activity Spotted Inside Former Riverwalk Bar & Grill, But Not A New Tenant, Just Removing Old Equipment

The Roosevelt Island Rivewalk Bar & Grill closed for good last Labor Day and since then residents have been hoping to see a new restaurant take its place. But so far nothing.

There was a glimmer of hope yesterday when activity was seen inside the former Riverwalk Bar space.

Another resident reported:
Activity at Riverwalk Bar and Grill as of 6:15 pm.

At least 10 people inside milling about.

Aluminum patio chairs are loaded in truck parked on path to subway.
But the hope was dashed when one of the former owners was spotted today having equipment

removed from the restaurant

and carted away into a truck

with a sign saying they buy used restaurant equipment.

Yesterday I asked the landlord for the space, Hudson Related:
Any update on new tenant for Riverwalk Bar.

... Or other retail tenants- Hot Pot, Eleanor Cafe, Mexican restaurant?
Will update when info received.

Loud High Pitched Frequency Recurring Noise Near Roosevelt Island Tram & Queensboro Bridge Says Residents - Do You Hear It Too?

A Roosevelt Island resident asks:

Does anyone know what is the recurring noise we are hearing by the tram? We are in 405 Main and hear the noise periodically since last week. I had counted at some point and it had interval of 10 seconds.

My husband hears it to, so I'm not crazy; unless it makes two of us :)

 The Husband adds yesterday:
The first time I recall hearing the noise was on December 27th in the early afternoon - possibly around 1 PM or so. More recently it has been in the evening - last night it occurred at about 9:30 pm, and persisted for several minutes.

The noise starts as a loud constant high pitched tone that that slowly moves into an even higher frequency tone over the course of about 15 seconds. It stops briefly, and then starts over at the lower frequency tone several times. At first this cycle would repeat for 2-4 times, but last night it happened for a much longer period of time - it seemed like at least a few minutes. We hear the noise from any room with windows facing the Manhattan side of the river. Because it's such a high pitched tone, it's hard to triangulate whether it's north or south of us, but I'd estimate that it's somewhere between the Queensboro bridge and the construction zone near the subway station. We're at 405 Main St. and the rooms where we hear the tone have windows facing the East River directly across from 60th and 61st St. in Manhattan.

... Oh wow - it is literally happening right now (Thursday, Jan. 3rd) Here are the times and durations:

At 12:04 PM, for about 20 seconds
At 12:05 PM, for about 1 minute
At 12:07 PM, for about 30 seconds
At 12:20 PM for about 20 seconds
At 12:21 PM for about 20 seconds
At 12:23 PM for about 20 seconds
At 12:25 PM for about 20 seconds
At 12:28 PM for about 20 seconds
At 12:35 PM for about 20 seconds
At 12:36 PM for about 20 seconds
At 12:37 PM for about 30 seconds
At 12:39 PM for about 20 seconds
At 12:45 PM for about 30 seconds
At 12:47 PM for about 20 seconds
At 12:48 PM for about 20 seconds
At 12:50 PM for about 30 seconds
At 12:52 PM for about 10 seconds
At 12:54 PM for about 10 seconds
At 12:56 PM for about 5 seconds
and today:
... We heard it again last night and this morning for about 15 minutes. I opened my window a few times while the noise was occurring, and the sound actually gets nearly drowned out among the general background noise of the outdoors. My windows must do a good job blocking sound, but this particular frequency cuts right through it. For that reason, I'm not surprised that it's not being widely reported....
I asked the Tram Staff today if they knew anything about the noise and they had not heard anything.

There have been several instances in the past where loud noises from the Power Plants in Queens and Manhattan have spooked residents but they were heard by many.

Have you heard the noise - any ideas?

The Postdoctoral Association of Weill Cornell Medicine is hosting a January 22 Pub Talk event at Roosevelt Island's Nisi Kitchen (559 Main Street).

You're invited to attend. According to the Weill Cornell Medicine Postdocs:
Pub Talk” Series; an outreach event featuring the research of WCM postdocs* to engage both fellow researchers and science enthusiasts from around New York City!

Come meet your friendly neighborhood scientists! Two researchers from Weill Cornell Medicine will discuss what they are doing in the lab and the clinic to advance the scientific frontier in psychiatric disease.

Up first, Michael Notaras will present "When does schizophrenia really begin?". Join Michael as he discusses cutting-edge research involving 3D stem cell bioengineering technology to design “mini-brains”, organoids that mimic the first trimester of brain development. Using this technology, he is able to study when mental disorders such as schizophrenia truly commence and the long term consequences for adult disease.

Next, Reed Maxwell will present "More than Ups and Downs: Everything You Didn't Know You Needed to Know about Borderline Personality Disorder". Reed will discuss the ins and outs (and ups and downs) of Borderline Personality Disorder, including best treatments, how to recognize friends and loved ones who might have it, and how to help them out.

How Do I Dispose Of My Roosevelt Island Christmas Tree - RI Garden Club Advice On Recycling Trees For NYC Parks Department Mulchfest Or Building Managers Will Bring Trees To AVAC Area Says RIOC

Julia Ferguson of the Roosevelt Island Garden Club (RIGC) reports:

Keep your holiday trees up and festive until Jan.4th, then, it is easy to recycle these natural, organic resources! You can return them to our local tree beds and parks thanks to NYC Parks & Recreation and Mulchfest.

If you have access to a car, it is relatively easy to recycle these natural, organic resources!

You can drop it off at Two Coves Community Garden or at Queensbridge Park or take it to the chipping event at Astoria Park. It feels great to end the holiday season by returning your tree to soil in local tree beds or parks thanks to NYC Parks & Recreation and Mulchfest. See the Queens map for locations.

Please contact rigardencluboutreach@gmail.com if you are interested in helping RI neighbors divert trees from landfill and take them to a Mulchfest site this year.

The NYC Sanitation Department will:
Weather permitting, we will collect and compost clean Christmas trees left at the curb between Wednesday, January 2, 2019, and Saturday, January 12, 2019.

Trees are chipped, mixed with leaves and recycled into rich compost for NYC's parks, institutions, and community gardens. Remove all lights, ornaments, tinsel, stands, and plastic bags from your tree....

NYC Sanitation will not pick up Christmas Trees from Roosevelt Island sidewalks.

According to Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) President Susan Rosenthal:
The Sanitation Dept doesn’t send its regular garbage trucks down Main Street---and how great is that for our noise and traffic control! But, all Building Managers can pick up trees from their residents and bring them down to the AVAC area where they will be picked up and shredded by the Sanitation Dept.
But, don't know if the Roosevelt Island Trees shredded at AVAC will be used for mulching by the NYC Parks Department.

The RIGC has more on their past efforts to obtain Roosevelt Island Tree Mulching.

Please contact rigardencluboutreach@gmail.com if you are interested in helping RI neighbors divert trees from landfill and take them to a Mulchfest site this year.
