Trellis Closed By Order Of The Commissioner Of Health - No Reason Known At This Time

Image of Trellis diner from nrvlowdown

As I was walking by the Trellis Diner this evening, I saw this notice taped to it's window announcing that the restaurant was closed by order of the Commissioner of Health and Mental Hygiene.

At this time, no reason given nor is any information provided at the NYC Dept. of Health Roosevelt Island restaurant inspection web page as to why Trellis might have been closed.

Why does RIOC keep renewing leases for these skanky Main Street food places ? Such incompetent management may lead to yet another empty store front on Main Street.

I never thought of Trellis as skanky. The portions and food do differ from waiter to waiter but generally my food has been good. The violations should have been addressed immediately. Hopefully, the violations will be addressed quickly and Trellis will reopen. They r an integral part of RI. We need more resturants on RI. There aren't too many choices on the Island for eating out. The last thing RI needs is another empty storefront.

It's about time! I hope the Trellis folks are going to take this opportunity to clean up the place. It was really disgusting. I assume China 1 is going to be next?

I posted a link to the inspection reports last night, but it hasn't shown up for some reason. Trellis repeatedly failed a number of inspections. You can search the Department of Health restaurant inspection reports by zip code and see exactly how all of our restaurants are doing. A restaurant is given a couple of times to clear the violations, but then is closed down. Once they feel they have met the requirements, they can request another inspection and if they pass, they are allowed to reopen.

The link, again:

Sorry -- the link doesn't work. Try Googling NYC Department of Health resaurant inspection reports. You can search by name or zip code, using the drop down menu. (They misspelled Trellis as Trelli's.)

11:31 - thanks for the link to DOH inspection report for Trellis.
The link is already in the body of the post so no need to google, unless your referring to something else.

The Health Dept web page gives several violations, which have a numerical weight. The inspection was on May 30 and there were 4 violations totalling 32 points. The web page also links to previous inspections. The May 9 inspection got 45 points, and included several things not in the most recent inspection: spoiled food, food at wrong temperatures, plumbing and sewage disposal issues. The remaining violations were for inadequate personal cleanliness, "single service item reused, improperly stored, dispensed; not used when required" and "non-food contact surface improperly constructed, unacceptable material used, non-food contact surface or equipment improperly maintained", and thermometer not used to evaluate food temperatures.

So, now it's July 21st and Trellis is closed again. Seriously, what is wrong with this place?
