Trellis Open For Business Today

The Trellis Diner opened today after being closed for the last week by the Department of Health.

Here is the restaurant inspection report for Roosevelt Island from DOH.

Did anybody disclose what they fixed to get the points down?

I hope that they swapped out those week old cakes, pies, and pastries in the display. More than often I was served a stale piece of cake there.

I wonder how long before they are shut down again. Disgraceful that the RIOC cannot find better alternatives than fly infested restaurants to fill vacant store fronts.

I've only been living here for about a month and they've been shut down twice. I'll never eat there again.

Several of us who have lived on the Island for many years were talking about Trellis last night. We've all eaten there regularly all this time, and lived to tell about it. We wish they would refurbish, we hope they will be more vigilant about the health code, but bottom line, there's not much choice, so we'll still be eating there.

How could anyone possibly want to eat at a place that has been shut down twice in as many months for having nearly 50 violations. The thought that rodents and insects are mingling among the unproperly stored food makes me shivver.

To the 11:51am poster: of course you have alternatives. It is not like the UES is so unreachable for a dinner out. Plenty diners in LIC deliver to RI also if that's what you are looking for.

The only way to get a business change its way of doing things is by boycotting it. They will not change unless you show them that they are NOT the only deal in town. The owners of Trellis have to wake up and turn the place into something better. The neighborhood is gentrifying and if they don't keep up they will lose out.

It's nice that you are gentrifying the neighborhood and can travel freely for an alternative place to eat, but there are plenty of elderly and disabled people for whom a trip to the UES is pretty unreachable for a meal, and who would like to get out of the apartment rather than get food deliveries. Many regulars at Trellis use it to socialize as much as to eat.

Either way...being shut down twice and having such a high violation score is a bit disturbing...

To the 4:46 poster ... There are plenty of places to eat near the tram. With the red bus stopping every 20 feet and taking you directly to the tram, it's not much of a journey.

It's sad that people are willing to continue to give this place business when they clearly don't care about their customer's health.

i don't fully trust new york city restaurant inspectors, particularly in an area that is under gentrification pressures. i have eaten at trelli's for many years. it is a typical new york coffee shop, but it also has a neighborly feel that is increasingly rare in this city. i also would mention that the staff, most of whom are immigrants, are exceptionally hard working and friendly --- and they eat there all the time. Lighten up people.

With the Pizza store and Bakery in Eastwood closed , Trellis almost has a monopoly on the older, handi-capped people in the WIRE buildings..
It would be nice if RIOC could attract a healthfood store offering prepared food as well.

Come on Trellis, this is your chance to do the right thing by your patrons. Take it to the next level...increase prices a small percentage, and use the money to UPGRADE the kitchen and food, it will come back to you four fold. We deserve better!

to the 4:46pm poster - I am not sure why you are attacking me. It is not me who is gentrifying the area. I suffer from the increased rents as much as many other folks here.

I still refuse to accept Trellis as the status quo. It could be a cool place and still be affordable if only somebody would care a little more (or maybe accept a little less profit or increase the prices just slightly) and put some money into the joint).

Sometimes I have the feeling that Roosevelt Island is a club or a clique that does not welcome newcomers and that thinks that change is evil.

12:37 - Unfortunately there are some people on Roosevelt Island who are satisfied with things that are "not that bad"

I have eaten numerous times at Trellis since moving to the island and have found it to be a hit and miss kind of place. Sometimes the food is great and other times it can be the opposite. However since they were shut down the first time I refuse to eat there. Sure they cleaned up their act, twice now, but in my opinion they should not have let it get to the point of being shut down.

RIer: that was me. Yes, I cannot stand Trellis but am in favor of keeping the outdoor movies at Firefighter Field.

Trellis is "really bad" and not just "not so bad".

Personal preferences.

It's simple. Look at RIOC's tenants (Trellis, M&D Deli, etc.). Then look at Southtown's tenants: Starbuck's, Pizza, Sushi, Duane Reade. When your landlord stinks, your business stinks. No half decent landlord would tolerate these jokes. But RIOC and the politicians use that stupid Public Accountability Law as an excuse for doing nothing. And these jokes were bad BEFORE that law took effect. They've been bad for over 20 years. Let Steve Ross and Related rent out those spaces and you'll see a difference in 6 weeks. It's our lives and living, and the state doesn't give a shit.

I don't think we should make RIOC the scapegoat here. At the last Board meeting, Tellis asked for a lease renewal in order to renovate the place. OK, so renovate it.

I'm seriously getting sick of Trellis. 65% of the time I eat there I get food poisoning. One time I got so sick I turned pale and shivered as if I was nude in Alaska and threw up all darn night. I was so dehydrated and instantly digested everything I ate or drank. I almost thought I had to go to the hospital. It took days and a lot of medicine to cure me.
I was in serious pain..

Even my parents get sick half the time they eat there. My mother ate a burger there recently and tried hard not to cry on the bus and everyone was staring at her. Humiliating..
My father had a fettachini alfredo there and his stomach exploded. He wasn't even finished and just threw it away.

Another time there was a bugs on my food and the waiter had the balls enough to try to convince me that it came from 'trees' and to just flick it off with his sleazy smug grin and crossed arms. The waiters clearly don't care about your health and laugh if you complain. They manage to try to convince you with incredibly lame excuses to eat your food and stop complaining that there's weird dirty things on your food.

How does Trellis get away with this? Why is their business still continuing? This is a disgrace.. Even after they were closed down they STILL can't keep clean.

Numerous times I caught the waiters just scoop salads on plates with their bare hands. I've caught them many times exiting the bathroom without washing their hands. They hold the plates and their fingers touch your food. This is pathetic!
