New Roosevelt Island Tram Design Renderings For Manhattan and Roosevelt Island Stations - Tram Shutdown in September Reopens Next February

Here are the latest design renderings for the Roosevelt Island Tram Manhattan and Roosevelt Island Stations.

RIOC President Steve Shane reports on the progress of the Roosevelt Island Tram Modernization program:

Tram Overhaul: The schedule for a July 2009 shutdown and December reopening has shifted. The Contractor, POMA, has requested sliding the window of closure to accommodate redesign changes in the structural elements, principally the tower heads and the necessary bracing. Design and fabrication of the various elements is well advanced. A shutdown on September 8 and a reopening in February now being finalized. Better coordination with architectural work at the two stations will result. I met again with Community Board 8 on June 3. Architectural work for Tram stations is proceeding. A preliminary sketch of the Manhattan and Island stations is posted on the RIOC website, but it is an evolving concept.
Mr. Shane's statement is part of his column that appears both on this blog and in the Main Street WIRE. His full column will appear in whole later in the week.

I would like to remember the current Tram like this representation of it taken at it's 33rd birthday.

HAS ANYBODY ON THIS ISLAND REALIZED THAT NO ONE WILL GET ON AND OFF WHEN THE TRAM GOES DOWN!!!!

WAKE UP PEOPLE-INCLUDING YOU NEW RICH SNOT ASSES, YOU WON'T BE GOING ANYWHERE, EITHER.

I HAVE LIVED HERE SINCE 1982, WE HAD A SIMILAR OUTAGE YEARS AGO AND MY BUILDING- IN THE "FORGOTTEN" SETTLERS PART OF MAIN STREET, WE COULD NOT GET ON AND OFF VERY EASILY.

WESTVIEW AT THAT TIME WAS THE NEWEST BUILDING AND THE AM RUSHOUR BUSES TO HORRIBLE QUEENS PLAZA WERE A DISASTER.

ALL OF THIS COMMUNITY NEEDS TO RALLY AND DO SOMETHING!!!!!!!!!!!

Your keyboard seems to be broken. Check the caps lock key.

We had a prolonged outage of the tram just a couple years ago or so and it was fine. Was it great? No. It was bearable, though.

To Whomever replied back to my comment, no my Keyboard is not broken..

I guess you did not read the entire post.

The Tram outage was 3 years ago, as a long term- 27 years, I tend remember things like that.

I am talking about years ago, I am not sure how long you have resided on this Island, but it did not work well.

At that particular time, we were bused on the Red Buses to Queensboro Plaza to the Subway and it did not work well.

As you have have noticed or not- people have trouble getting on the F train during the AM rush hours.

That problem has been going on for over 6 years now.

Have you tried to get on the F train during the AM Rush.

We still have the Tram up now and it is still very very difficult to get on the Train.

The MTA and RIOC are making no good contingency plans to get the RI residents on and off this Island during the next Tram outage.

This is due to take place during Sept.-Feb.

As I remember, three years ago, there were problems with the red buses running to and from Manhattan and back during the Rush hours. I was working for Sloan-Kettering at the time.

Just curious- how many years have you resided here and what the part of the Island do you reside in?

I live in Westview, where I have been since 7/82.

Hi, I'm actually new to Roosevelt Island and am increasingly concerned with being able to get off the Island in the morning hours. I'm a high school teacher in Westchester and I need be at Grand Central or 125th St. to board the Metro North between 6:30 and 7 every morning. The tram was my contingency plan, but it seems that's not going to work. Would any of you be able to provide some more insight into how bad the F is at around 6am or how often it's not operational? I appreciate your help, I sign my lease on Wedneday and am looking forward to moving onto the Island, but am also a little uneasy about transportation. Thanks.

Hi- firstly, Welcome!!!.

We don't know what is really going to occur when the Tramway goes out on 3/1/10, that is if does go out of service, there are rumors it may not.

We have had F train problems for years and years, even before the newer buildings were built and no one seems to want to solve this Problem.

The MTA doesn't seem to care, neither does RIOC. RIOC is the adminstrator for this island put in place by NYS and the Governor.

There may be contingency plans to run shuttle buses to the Subway at Queensboro Plaza. The last time they did that, was years ago and it did not work well.

Alot of us are very concerned about the Tram going out regarding getting to work, for those with jobs right now, getting to interviews and even getting off island on the weekend.

I would suggest calling RIOC and asking them directly.

Ask the Head of your Building what they have heard.

I have to say we have the Worst Transportation problems I have seen in over 25 years of living here.

My Lease is up in 2/10 and it is definitely one of the reasons I want to leave the Island my home city of New York city totally.

Good Luck to you.
