Who Wants Some Roosevelt Island Ice Cream? Mr. Softee Is Waiting For You At The Tram Plaza -But Where Is The Good Humor Man?

Image of Mr. Softee Ice Cream Truck at Roosevelt Island Tram Plaza

If you are in the mood for some ice cream as you get off the Roosevelt Island Tram, why not order a cone

or some other tasty treat from the Mr. Softee truck parked at the Tram Plaza like these folks did yesterday afternoon.

Even in colder weather, outdoor ice cream is still good.

When I was a kid many years ago in Brooklyn, no sound in the summer was as welcome as the ringing bells of the Good Humor Truck as it turned the corner on my street

or the Mr. Softee Ice Cream Truck Jingle.

Everything stopped. No more playing punchball, stickball or any other street game as we asked our parents for money so we could buy some ice cream.

Here's one more piece of ice cream nostalgia from a time long ago.

Did you hear that Mickey Mantle just hit one in the Bleachers!!!!

Ugh. Mr Softee is really bad (the kids like it, though). I really hope that we'll have an ice cream place coming to RI soon. I'd love to see a Haagen Dasz but will be happy with a BR/DD combo.

I think an ice cream shop would be great! I agree, Mr. Softee is bad and I'm not sure it's even ice cream. I also wish they could be around for those who want it without running a generator. I guess it's better than nothing but real ice cream all year would be wonderful!

This is not real ice cream or Carvel type soft ice cream. It is $3 for a cup or cone. The truck has a noisy generator that goes constantly. We checked but it is not from the engine so I do not think much can be done about it.

The truck is not "Mr.Softee", more like Brand X.

I believe in free enterprise but listening to this monster all afternoon is not pleasant.

I agree that a good ice cream shop or cart would be great and was not recommending this particular truck - just using it as an example since I observed people buying from them yesterday.

I have never tried their product.

Guess I was just overwhelmed by the ice cream nostalgia of another time.

I also remember Good Humor & even Mister Softee. Of course back in the day no-one had any consciousness of a quality or healthy product versus one concocted out of manufactured ingredients. Today, people tend to prefer an authentic less "plastic" product. One of us should do a search of the "smokin'" ice cream vendors of today. If one of us can find out about quality ice cream trucks maybe operating in LIC, Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Dumbo, or Redhook, maybe we could entice them to stop by RI especially on a day of a festival such as Health or RI day.

It would be great to get text alerts when any of the trucks are here on the island!

ITS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME TILL THE OWNER OF THE PIZZA SHOP HAS THE ICE CREAM MAN BANNED FROM SELLING ICE CREAM ON THE ISLAND , JUST LIKE HE DID TO DOMINOS PIZZA.

its only a matter of time . until the owner of the pizza shop bands the ice cream truck from the island , just like he did it to dominos pizza,

Has RIOC granted Nonno an exclusive right to provide pizza on RI?

Anonymous said...

Rioc hasn't done that. Rioc isn't even the landlord for nonno's.

May, J.R., Billy, and all the other endless number of handles you are using... Dominos was kicked of this island for one very simple reason: violation of lots of health codes. Do you really think selling stacks of pre-made pizza from the trunk of some car will be tolerated for long? Had nothing to do with Nonno's.

thats not true .there are a few people selling food on saturdays. are you going to tell me none of them have heath code violations., ,see no one calls the police on them . but the owner of nonnnos made sure to make that call to his friends in the nypd . to keep giving this poor guy from dominos ticket after ticket.but no one else got tickets. so see the owner of nonnos is no good.also there were no health code violations tickets given , the tickets that were given were for things that nonnos freinds from the 114 pct. made up , the guy from dominos was getting so many tickets here, he just gave up .

Jr may have a point. What is the difference between conventional pizzerias that keep pre-made pizzas on little glassed-in shelves, then re-heat slices for customers in the pizza oven when they are purchased, as opposed to keeping entire pre-made pies in boxes read to sell for customers to re-heat in their own ovens at home?

jr said...

thank you ,gregor, i know what i am saying to be true . because my wife is on the p.t.a. of 217 .they are the ones who run this on saturdays..people pay the pta for the right to put a table there .

If you guys would read up on some of the health code you will notice that there are stringent standards that a pizza place has to follow. You do not really believe that the pizza from the trunk guys are anywhere close to the code, do you?

Anonymous said...

Since you are in the know. What tickets did they get?

There are all kinds of foods going unrefrigerated or not being kept warm for extended periods of time - such as the borekas guy, the Turkish guy with the olives, dolmas etc., and even the slabs of cheeses and the eggs the Amish guy sells. These are just out all day. I think the pizza guy was probably drastically underselling Nonno's - and that is why he was driven from RI. I remember the pizza vendor on Saturdays was doing a very brisk business - obviously Nonno's disliked the sharp competition (even for only 1 day a week)!

jr said...

what i am telling you is true ,also the pizza guy was not selling pizza from the truck of his car the pizza was made at dominos put in a box , then the box was put into one of those bags to keep it warm .so where is the heath violation,i may call i.a.b of the nypd and report this, and the cops who did this to help their fellow retired cop will see the fun begin .

jr said...

ok you dont belive me go to the school and ask the p.t.a

jr said...

remeber he was selling pizza for 5 dollars a whole pie ,nonnos had a good reason to run him off the island

Anonymous said...

What on duty nypd officer would help a money making retired guy sell pizza? That sounds rediculous in its own way.

Anonymous said...

You guys really think that $5 pies sold from the trunk of a car parked on the side of Main Street undercut Nonno's? You gotta be kidding me. Both sold pizza to two entirely different demographics. Neither was a competition to each other.

JR, you said your wife works in the PTA and you are in the know. Tell us what kinds of ticket Dominoes got. I don't have to run to the school to get that info, do I? I can get it from you. That would make a good story for this blog, too, I'd imagine. By judging your commentary here I'm very sure you would love that kind of publicity.

Dominoes started out with a little table at the Farmer's Market. For some reason a couple of weeks later they abandoned that (maybe they "forgot" to pay the PTA for the table?) and sold pizzas from the trunk of their car. They did that for a couple of weeks and were gone for good after that.
