Mobile Food Trucks Not Coming To Roosevelt Island Yet, RIOC Offers No Charge For July To Try Us Out - Please Come Luke's Lobsters, Mexicue, Rickshaw Dumplings And Others, We Will Buy Lots Of Your Food

Reported previously that Roosevelt Island Mobile Food Truck applications were finally made available by the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC). During yesterday's RIOC Operations Committee meeting (audio webcast of full meeting is here), RIOC VP of Operations Fernando Martinez reported that no Mobile Food Truck Operator has expressed interest in serving Roosevelt Island yet.

I guess we got the answer to my question from this post:
... The question now becomes if any Mobile Food Truck vendor will come to Roosevelt Island with the  extra RIOC fees and regulations that are not required in any other NYC neighborhood?...
As Roosevelt Island resident Mark Lyon commented:
Some responses from twitter:

Big Gay Ice Cream ‏@biggayicecream@markhlyon Damn, $345 a month, three month minimum? Gonna have to pass!

New York Street Food ‏@nystfood@markhlyon Thanks for the info Mark. I may write about it, but at $345/mo, don't know how many trucks will do it.
In response to the lack of interest shown by food truck operators in Roosevelt Island so far,  RIOC Directors decided during the Operations Committee meeting to waive the $345 monthly fee for July to see if any food trucks would come to Roosevelt Island.  Here's the discussion at the RIOC Operations Committee meeting.

So, Mobile Food Trucks like Luke's Lobsters, Mexicue, Rickshaw Dumplings, Schnitzel, Coolhaus, Waffles and Dingles and all the other great ones, please come to Roosevelt Island. You will have a ready, willing and very hungry public ready to buy your food - particularly during the evening rush hours and weekends.

The complete Roosevelt Island Mobile Food Truck vendor application is here and the map of available locations here. The allowable locations for food trucks does include the West Promenade near the subway station which had been initially excluded by RIOC. Other locations include Lighthouse Park, Octagon Soccer Field, Tram Station and Southpoint Park. Existing street vendors are located at the Motorgate Farmers Market and Subway Station Fruit vendor.

Also learned at the RIOC Operations Committee meeting that the Subway Fruit Stand operator will add another location at the Tram.

Just a bunch of clowns. The RIOC dismisses the opinions of people who actually talked to food vendors in favor of some theories that one or two board members can come up with why there is no interest. It is interesting to see, though, that it is being discussed why there are no applicants.

All that said, what exactly is the reason for charging $345? It's just money making with the idea that if the fruit stand and the "ice cream" truck pays it it must be okay.

How about a truck selling soul food

Absolutely agree YetAnotherRIer.  There's no reason to charge these trucks another fee if they're already paying for a NYC permit.

Somehow RIOC thinks it's special and wants its special cut.  A food truck is going to leave high-traffic all the time in Manhattan for occasional traffic here on RI. Ridiculous.  Guess we are stuck with the aging fruit stand and no-name ice cream. Hey, when is the 'gourmet food market' going to open up, so I may be able to get some ice cream that's actually FROZEN? (unlike Gristedes which has either been, or is, melted.)

For Ice Cream, I highly recommend ordering @adirondackcream 's mint chip from @FreshDirect .  It's made locally and is amazing.

We gave up on getting anything from Gristedes after the first time I bought my weekly salad supplies only to find that the deli meat was rancid and the vegetables started to turn before the week was up.

SweeteryNYC http://sweeterynyc.com could possibly be interested in participating during evening hours and weekend, however a better understanding of the area, including flow of pedestrian traffic, exact coordinates, and demographics needs to be understood. Who can we speak with who can provide quality info to us?

RIOC should be able to provide you with the information you require - The permit office can be reached at 212-832-4563.

West Road, near the Subway and Tram, is an excellent location for the "going home" traffic - almost everyone returns to the island in one of those two ways. http://goo.gl/maps/vmx1  On the weekends, the parks at the Northern and Southern ends of the islands see a lot of traffic, as does the large soccer field near the Octagon. http://goo.gl/maps/osAS

Roosevelt Island consists of two census tracts - 238.01 and 238.02.  I've saved demographic profile data from the 2010 ACS at https://dl.dropbox.com/u/10143393/238_01_DEC_10_DP_DPDP1.pdf and https://dl.dropbox.com/u/10143393/238_02_DEC_10_DP_DPDP1.pdf
