Halloween Safety Tips From Roosevelt Island Public Safety Department - Have Fun And Be Alert

Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) Public Safety Department Director Jack McManus shares these Halloween Safety tips.

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS
  • Trick-or-treat in your neighborhood.
  • Stay in well-lighted areas.
  • Have kids use glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.
  • Children under the age of 12 should not be alone at night without adult supervision.
  • Remind them to stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups
  • Never go out alone. Make sure older kids go out with friends.
  • When selecting a costume make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls.
  • Go only to apartments you know.
  • Set a time limit for children to trick-or-treat.
  • Remind kids not to enter a strange house or car.
  • Walk Safely: Cross the street at crosswalks, look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross.
  • Put electronic devices down and keep heads up and walk, do not run, across the street.
  • Teach children to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.
  • Always walk on sidewalks.
  • Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.
  • Wear white or reflective clothing. Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers; if possible choose light colors
  • Inspect the candy when you get home.
Have fun at tomorrow's Roosevelt Island Halloween Parade Extravaganza.

Led by 70 accomplished engineering, health tech, connective media, and MBA students from all over the world, Hack Roosevelt Island Let's Code RI will help show that coding can be easy and fun for kids. Through the games, kids will learn useful computational thinking methods that they can use in a variety of classes and situations.

Google Maps Street View Virtual Tour Of Roosevelt Island FDR Four Freedoms Park

According to the FDR Four Freedoms Park:

... we celebrate the third anniversary of the opening of the Park with some exciting news: Four Freedoms Park can now be explored from the comfort of your home on Google Maps Street View!

This exciting news is the culmination of an 8-month process to create a virtual tour of the memorial. The Park applied to be part of Street View in February, and in August, a Google Trekker Operator visited the Park to capture thousands of panoramic images.

Shooting on foot and from the stern of Captain Tony DiLernia's Rocket Charter boat, the Trekker wore a large 50 lbs backpack fitted with a special camera rig consisting of 15 cameras. Incredibly, the cameras are able to capture a frame every two seconds! During his two-day visit to the Park, the Trekker was tasked with photographing the Park as a visitor might experience it, so that every detail, from cobblestone to tree to engraving can be viewed from all angles...

Possible Location For Red Bus Bench In Front Of Manhattan Park 10 River Road

To date, Manhattan Park refuses to allow a Red Bus bench to be installed on Main Street in front of 10 River Road said RIOC's Cy Opperman. Ms Smith suggested having Roosevelt Island Seniors wait for Red Bus in the 10 River Road lobby if Manhattan Park will not allow a bench outside the building.

RIOC Engineering Department Director John Bost reports a continuing drainage problem in the area. Also, Mr. Opperman said the turnaround was not designed to handle the larger and heavier Red Buses now in use.
