Chicken Wings, Knife, Cleaver - Roosevelt Island China One Counter Person Thwarts Robbery Attempt At Closing Time Tuesday Night

According to the December 13 Roosevelt Island Public Safety Incident report:

12/13/16- 2300- 609 Main St.- Robbery- PSD/NYPD responded. Referred to NYPD.
I asked the NYPD what happened. The NYPD reported that a male, approximately 18 years of age went into the Roosevelt Island China One restaurant

about 11 PM on December 13 asking for an order of chicken wings.

The China One counter person said the store was closed after which the chicken wing seeking male took out a knife and demanded money. The China One Counter Person responded by picking up a cleaver and the male quickly left the store.

Nobody was injured

Department & Position Background

Startup activity at Cornell Tech has reached a critical mass and is accelerating, with many entrepreneurial faculty, postdocs, and masters students committed to creating new ventures. Update On New Roosevelt Island Mexican Restaurant & Bar Onda Scheduled To Open In Summer 2017 - Experienced Owners Excited To Become Part Of Roosevelt Island Community

Received more information regarding the new Mexican restaurant and bar, Onda, scheduled to open at Roosevelt Island's 548 Main Street in the summer of 2017.

As reported December 7:
... Hudson Related Retail LLC has signed a lease to bring a new contemporary Mexican restaurant and bar to 548 Main Street on Roosevelt Island. Onda will occupy an approximately 2,000 sq. ft. storefront in the Island’s retail center— known as the Shops on Main— and will be operated by D&D Restaurant Group. As the Island’s first sit-down Mexican restaurant-bar, Onda will serve authentic, rustic cuisine and offer both small and large plates in a modern setting. The restaurant, which plans to apply for a liquor license, is anticipated to open in Summer 2017....
According to a Hudson Related spokesperson, the owners of Onda are:
  • Dino Siamas, former partner at 151, Vue, Nero and Island Restaurant Lounge​ (LIC),​
  • Ike Gizas, former GM at Philippe, Jue Lan and S Prime Steakhouse and
  • Daryl Nisivoccia, current partner at The Diner in the Meatpacking​ District​
A spokesperson for D&D Restaurant Group added:
We are looking forward to opening Onda and to becoming a part of the Roosevelt Island community. We are touched by the outpouring of support and excitement for the addition of a modern Mexican restaurant to the existing offerings on Main Street, and will make more details available about our concept and menu as soon as we can.

After Delays, Roosevelt Island Sportspark Facility To Open In Mid January Says RIOC - Getting Competent Contractors To Work On Roosevelt Island Among Reasons For Delays

Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) consultant Mike Russo reported to the December 8 RIOC Board of Directors meeting about the problems associated with renovating the Sportspark facility

which was scheduled to be completed before Thanksgiving.

According to Mr. Russo, obtaining competent contractors to work on Roosevelt Island is extremely difficult which contributed to delays in completing the Sportspark renovation on schedule.



RIOC President Susan Rosenthal added that Sportspark should open in Mid January 2017 when heat becomes available for the facility.

The Sportspark renovations include installation of a new roof, a new boiler and repairs to the pool.

You're Invited To Roosevelt Island Community Meeting On Future Of Southpoint Park Tuesday December 13 - Review Various Proposals For Future Active And Passive Uses Of Southpoint Park

4th Community Advisory Committee Meeting

As a reminder, the 4th Community Advisory Committee Meeting will be held on Tuesday, December 13th at 6:30 PM at the Good Shepherd Community Center (543 Main Street) in the large community room on the lower level of the building.

Note: A call-in number has been set up for anyone who cannot attend but would like to observe the meeting live. Please email the project team at SouthpointOpenSpace@gmail.com by 2:00 PM tomorrow (December 13th) to request the call-in information.

Most of the evening will involve presentations, discussions, and activities with the Committee members, but there will be a designated time at the end of the meeting to hear from the public. There will also be comment forms available if public attendees want to submit their input in writing.

The Community Advisory Committee has representatives from over 20 organizations on Roosevelt Island and is scheduled to meet a total of four times during the project, providing advice and input throughout.

New York Cares Roosevelt Island Winter Coat Drive At RIOC Public Safety Department Thru December 31 - Please Donate A Gently Used Winter Coat If You Can, Keep A Neighbor Warm This Winter

The Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) Public Safety Department is hosting it's annual NY Care Winter Coat Drive.



Please help if you can.


UPDATE 6:15 PM - I received a report earlier today that the Public Safety Department was turning away winter coat donations this afternoon and asked RIOC Public Safety Department Director Jack McManus about it. Director McManus replied:
We are conducting a coat drive. I did get a call on people being turned away and corrected that and those folks have already come back and dropped coats off. People can come in at any time (Day or Night), and we will be accepting donations.
