Roosevelt Island NYC East River Ferry Service Begins August 2017, In Water Dock Work Starts In July After Fish Breeding Moratorium Concluded Says RIOC - NYC Ferry Jobs Available

NYC Mayor  Bill de Blasio announced yesterday:
Mayor Bill de Blasio today announced that Citywide Ferry Service, now officially named "NYC Ferry," will be launching May 1st with two routes: the brand new Rockaway Route and the existing East River Route, both of which will cost just $2.75 a ride and include free transfers to other ferry routes. This puts NYC Ferry a full month ahead of schedule, with the system having initially been projected to launch in June of 2017.

Mayor de Blasio also announced that the South Brooklyn Route, with stops in Bay Ridge, Sunset Park, Red Hook and Brooklyn Bridge Park will begin service starting on June 1st. The Astoria Route will launch in August, with exact date still being determined, and the Lower East Side and Soundview Routes will be launching in 2018...
Roosevelt Island Ferry service on the Astoria Route will start sometime in August.

Today I asked Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) President Susan Rosenthal for a status update on the Roosevelt Island ferry dock. Ms. Rosenthal replied
City cannot start in-water work until fish breeding moratorium is concluded (July 1); need permits from NY Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and United States Army Corp of Engineers (USACE); piles installation for landing takes about 6 weeks and requires coordination with New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA).

City intends to start upland work, middle of May and to launch as close to 8/1-8/15 as possible.

According to Mayor de Blasio's announcement:
... Astoria route will connect to Astoria, Roosevelt Island (Cornell Tech), Long Island City, East 34th Street and Wall Street....
Images From NYC Ferry

Notice that the Roosevelt Island ferry location in Mayor de Blasio's announcement is identified to include Cornell Tech. I asked the Mayor's office:
Why is Cornell identified as the ferry location. I am not aware of any other NYC ferry location being identified with a private entity such as Cornell. Any statement from the Mayor's Office as to why the ferry location on Roosevelt Island is identified with Cornell and not just "Roosevelt Island".
Mayoral Spokesperson Jessica Ramos replied:
Currently it is referred to as Roosevelt Island—without the Cornell. It was noted as such in the press release to remind reporters that the stop will connect to new jobs at CT, as well as serving residents.

When the new map is released early next month, it will appear as “Roosevelt Island – East Main Street”. Landings will be a combination of the neighborhood where the stop is located and the nearest major street perpendicular to the shoreline.

There may be a job for you with the NY City Wide Ferry.
Mayor de Blasio adds:
I want every New Yorker to know: This is still your city. That means we need to help you climb the economic ladder right here. We have set a goal of creating 100,000 good-paying jobs over the next decade. These are jobs that pay at least $50,000 a year and offer opportunity and skills for a career.

This week, I announced that our Citywide Ferry Service – which will be running this summer – is now hiring for the first of 200 new jobs created by this innovative new transportation system.

Ferries mean jobs building the system, operating the system and maintaining the boats.

Ferries mean opportunity. Folks living in areas that have long been isolated from the rest of the city’s economy will now be able to hop on a quick, convenient ferry ride to a new future for the cost of a subway fare.

Ferries mean people have a new reason to leave their cars at home, relieving road congestion, taking pressure off mass transit and making our city more convenient for all.

Our ferries will serve 21 neighborhoods from The Rockaways in Queens, to South Brooklyn, to Soundview in the Bronx. Half a million New Yorkers will live within walking distance of a ferry stop. The system will carry an estimated 4.6 million trips per year across six routes.

We believe fundamentally that economic opportunity has not been spread wide enough in this city. We need more jobs. We need good paying jobs. We need to make sure everyone has access to them. One of the ways we will reach our goal of creating 100,000 new jobs is by looking to our waterfront.

You can apply now for careers on our ferries through the City Department of Small Business Services’ WorkForce1 Centers. For a list of locations click: https://maps.nyc.gov/sbs/. You can also apply at CitywideFerry.NYC, or through the Employment Center at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

Scenes From Roosevelt Island Egg Hunt - Cold Temperatures But Fun Times For Kids And Families

Roosevelt Island Residents Association Egg Hunt Co-Chair Irena Durkovic shares these photos and reports:

RIRA’s annual Egg Hunt

took place on Saturday, April 1st. Even though it was very cold, Roosevelt Island families came out with their little ones in great number. We estimate that about 180 families joined us.

There were multiple activities organized by our sponsors, such as bonnet making, pitching contest, lollypop pull, gifts giveaways and Eggs on Hats crafts. MSTDA’s Children Theater was responsible for entertaining the crown with Seusical Jr performance, and RIRA gave away free books. Kids enjoyed playing and taking photos with Easter Bunny.

The event was a great success, thanks to many island organizations that contributed: MSTDA, Island Kids, Ps/is 217, RIVAA, Girl Scouts, Hope church, RICCD, NYPL Roosevelt Island Branch, RI Marlins, Wildlife Freedom Foundation, RISA, The Carter Burden Center for Aging, CERT, Piccolo Trattoria, Wholesome Factory, New York Bagels in Queens, Starbucks, Roosevelt Island Historical Society, Cornell Tech, Roosevelt Island Parents Network, Manhattan Park and RIOC.

Besides our sponsors, this event would not be possible without the residents of Roosevelt island that came out to volunteer their time in preparation and during the event. If anybody has any comments, wishes or suggestions you can email Irena Durkovic irenaskuletic@yahoo.com.

and

Whereas, such service which is truly the lifeblood of the community and the city so often goes unrecognized and unrewarded; now, therefore be it

Resolved, that as duly elected members of the New York City Council, we recognize that in

Eva Bosbach

we have an outstanding citizen, one whom is worthy of the esteem of both community and the great City of New York.
Council Member Kallos recounts the efforts made by Ms. Bosbach and the RIPN to bring greatly needed additional Pre- Kindergarten seats to Roosevelt Island.

In response to receiving the NYC Council Citation, Ms Bosbach responded:
Thank you to all the active parent volunteers, our partner organizations, and our elected officials who in a team effort made the RI Parents' Network so successful! I wish my successors Cecilia Chen and Sangeeta Joseph our full support in further growing our network so we can continue to enjoy this unique community in New York and make it an even better place to live for families and all residents.

Indivisible Roosevelt Island Activists Going To Albany Tomorrow In Support Of NY Health Act Legislation Guaranteeing Health Care To All New Yorkers - You Can Act Too, Make A Phone Call

Indivisible Roosevelt Island

activist Ellen Polivy reports
Dear friends,

Tomorrow, Tuesday, April 4, marks 49 years since the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. To honor King's legacy, hundreds of New Yorkers are rallying at the state Capital to demand universal healthcare. Three Roosevelt Islanders from the Indivisible Roosevelt Island chapter are going, Lorraine Altman, Susan Wald and me.

New York Health Act would guarantee healthcare to ALL New Yorkers regardless of income, wealth, place of employment, or immigration status.

Please take action today.
As hundreds of New Yorkers rally in Albany to tell our legislators to please vote for New York Health, amplify our demands by making three phone calls:
  • To your own NYS Senator.(Senator Jose Serrano 212-828-5829) Ask them to cosponsor New York Health (S4840). Thank him for being a sponsor and ask him to do everything in his power to gain additional legislative support for the bill.
  • To your NYS Assembly member.(Rebecca Seawright 212-288-4607 or 518-455-5676) Ask them to cosponsor New York Health (A4738).
  • To Kemp Hannon (516-739-1700), the Republican from the 3rd Senate District who chairs the Health Committee. Ask him to please support New York Health (S4840) - it's good for the people in his district, it's good for business, and it's good for all of us in New York State!
Thank you for being part of the fight to to bring healthcare as a human right to all New Yorkers. Let's work together to make sure New York State leads the way!
