Roosevelt Island Tram Temporarily Out Of Service Due To Inclement Weather

According to this RIOC advisory dated 9:49 AM today:

Be advised that due to the inclement weather, the Tram is temporarily out of service.  Notifications will be made when the Tram is back in service.

Sincerely,

Roosevelt Island Operating Corp Advisories Group
Will have more information as it becomes available.

UPDATE 12:55 PM - Tram is back in operation. No explanation yet as to cause of the service disruption.

UPDATE 6:45 PM - From RIOC:
Tram service was temporarily suspended today due to severe weather. During rush hour, ice accumulation on the track ropes was discovered by our Tram operators. Once this was confirmed by the Tram crew, service was suspended at approximately 8:55 AM. After the temperature increased, several thorough test runs assured the crew that the ice had melted and the system was again ready for operation. Service resumed at approximately 12:45 PM. The Tram continues to be closely monitored for any changes that may effect its performance. Ensuring passenger safety remains the foremost priority for RIOC and all Tram personnel.

That's odd. I thought the only weather-related events that could cause a disruption in tram service were lightning and excessive winds, neither of which occurred this morning.

My experience with this mornings Tram.

Mind you I like the tram and am very happy that it is back ... but this is nothing like I ever experienced on the old tram.

-Walk to tram, rain is very light, not too windy 8am.

-While swiping my metro card at the turnstile I was getting pelted by significant pieces of ice and rain. It appeared to be raining and sleeting very hard -inside- the tram station. Looking up I noticed the rollers are spewing water and chunks of ice from the cables as the tram car is pulling in.

-Once inside tram cabin I cant see out the windows as it is covered with a sheet of ice - creating a very ominous feeling.

-Doors close and the car literally crackles up to the first tower where it shakes wildly and crackles thunderously.

-Gliding along over the river, large chunks of ice pummeled the cabin apparently falling from the cables above.

-Tower 2 experiencing more uncomfortable shakes then ... safely landing in Manahattan where I watch wheelchairs and strollers trying to navigate the unshoveled sidewalks immediately surrounding the tram area.

Watching the advertising videos aboard the tram, supplied by POMA, I know they make installations for more serious weather conditions than that of RI. The shakes we experience while passing the towers, even on the mild days, are bound to loosen some screws.

POMA and RIOC - remember this is not only a tourist destination, but for commuters -everyday, in all weather conditions. Close the tram, fix the issues and open it without all the political b-shit.

Our Tram history also includes occasional service disruptions for ice buildup on the cables or at the towers --

AFter 27 years here, I am grateful for my Tram, as long as it operates safely, and for having the subway as my alternative, which while not perfect, is an alternative.

POMA and RIOC need to listen to their most experienced Tram employees and engineers about the shimmy at the towers and a few other mechanical issues which are disturbing to us seasoned riders as well as some newcomers...

You guys still haven't gotten used to the bumps? I was told they are here to stay and they are just a consequence of how the cables run over the towers. They are not going to losen any screws.

Those are not just "bumps". On windy days they can be VIOLENT jerks caused, yes, by how the cables run over the towers, but more specifically, for something that was designed in year 2011, just bad engineering and not something that we should get used to. I also experienced getting hit with ice and rain from the cables going through the rollers while at the turnstile.

correction, it was not designed in 2011, (I know some sorry sole will tag me on that one), but it is a 21st century design and for 15mil+ 9 months out, we should expect more.

I've been taking the tram every single day at least a couple of days and never have these bumps been "violent". I think this really just depends on who experiences them (somebody here claimed some time ago that he/she had somebody puke on his/her shoes because of those bumps - I kind doubt that, though, but, hey, you never know). Once I got used to them I hardly notice them anymore. Maybe you guys should stop waiting for the bumps and just enjoy the ride?

All that said I do have a big criticism about the current tram: the cabins have way too many corners and niches that can't be filled with people efficiently. The wide poles in the middle divide the space up into parts that can cause "grid lock" with strollers, wheel chairs, and bikes. While the new cabins appear to be a lot bigger the awkward poles prevent this to be actual reality.

I think it would be really to have the armchair engineers that occupy this blog comment world actually design anything. The ride is really smooth. If it was any smoother these same people would complain its too smooth and eerie. If it was faster they would say its too fast. Its fast cheap and clean and has few situations like this. The subway can almost throw you across the car sometimes. Nothing is perfect, but I think we are lucky to have a cheapp and fast way to travel.

How dare you scoop the Main Street WIRE like this!!! I can't believe RIOC allowed this information to be published when the WIRE is only a week and a half away from its next issue.

While some may have liked the old Tram, it was just that OLD. It was falling apart and held together with ducktape.

This new Tram is the best of its kind. Stop whinning all the time. If you don't like it, take the 'F' Train for the same amount of money.

People here just like to complain.

To ANONYMOUS at 12:35 p.m.

Bad choice of words. On Roosevelt Island many have nothing against OLD

Ok, Ancient... Antiquated... outdated.

JPH, I don't know if your comments was serious or funny, but it made me laugh.

I thought JPH's post was funny too. However, it's RIRA that the WIRE is attached to, not RIOC.
