Roosevelt Island Concerts planned their Holiday Concert for tomorrow, December 19

but announced today:

Dear Friends,

We regret to inform you that we have decided to postpone our upcoming performance scheduled for Sunday, December 19th at 4pm to a later date. We were hoping we would not have to do so, but with the recent surge of covid cases in NYC, we feel this is the responsible thing to do. Your health and safety are most important to us, and rest assured: we will hold this concert when it is safer to gather in public again.

We will let you know when the concert will happen as soon as it is confirmed, and we hope you will be able to join us then.  We would like to thank our wonderful performers, Yi-heng Yang, Max Zeugner, and Dongmyung Ahn for their patience and understanding. We cannot wait to hear their performance as soon as possible. We would like to wish you health and safety at these trying times, and a joyous holiday season!

With warm regards from your Roosevelt Island Concerts team

Cornell Ithaca Campus Shuts Down Due To Widespread Covid Outbreak, Roosevelt Island Cornell Tech Campus Has Zero Cases So Far - Omicron Variant Spreading Quickly In NYC Says Mayor, Latest Roosevelt Island Covid Positivity Test Rate 4.06%

The Cornell University Ithaca New York campus is shutting down due to the rapid spread of Covid 19 among students.

During December 14 Cornell Tech Roosevelt Island Community Task Force meeting I asked if there was any:
... impact of Covid outbreak at Ithaca campus on Cornell Tech Roosevelt Island campus.

Cornell Tech Chief Administrative Officer Juliet Weissman replied yesterday:

As of this morning, the Ithaca campus has moved to a red alert level due to a rise in cases in their community. These are cases again, they have a very robust surveillance testing program. For those who don’t know, we are actually using their infrastructure. So we test students on our campus and send the samples to the lab in Ithaca to be processed. So yes, Ithaca is unfortunately seeing a significant increase in cases and they also moved their final exams online.

We have had zero cases for the past two weeks running through our surveillance testing which we feel very fortunate about. We don’t want to count our blessings through because we know what is happening in the city and in the state. From a precaution perspective we are also fortunately so close to the end of the semester that many of our students have actually already left campus. This is just judging from who we see testing this week, and I think what we have done is there is one final exam left that was going to be done in person and will likely be moved online just as a precaution. Not because we are seeing the cases at all like in Ithaca in solidarity with our Ithaca brothers and sisters, just trying to be as thoughtful and precautionary as we can.

We have been ahead of city and the state in terms of mask use and really discouraging in-person events that involve food. That has been another big source of discussion, so with end of year winter gatherings and so forth we have been very careful. We took a lot of precautions with our open studio event last week to make sure that folks were vaccinated and lots of people were tested before that event.”

You're Invited To Pandemic Island Creating An Archive Community Circle Gathering Saturday December 18 - Share And Preserve Your Personal Covid Lockdown Memories And Stories

Roosevelt Island resident and artist Thom Heyer reports:

Hi Friends--

As many of you know, Peter Yearwood from Open Doors & I have been working this Fall on a project called Pandemic Island: Creating an Archive.
We've been gathering Roosevelt Island residents, employees & students' pandemic stories from the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.
Many of you have already been generous enough to share your unique experiences with us.
We ask the same 3 questions to each person:

1.)  Do you have a memory of the first day and/or months of the lockdown & how did that feel?
2.)  Was there any routine or anything specific you did to help you cope during this time?
3.)  What do you want to make sure is recorded and not forgotten from what you experienced in the pandemic?

We're having our final Community Circle Gathering with light refreshments this Saturday 12//18/21 at the Chapel of the Good Shepherd from 3--4:30pm.  It will be an informal time of sharing within the circle of what we've & other's have been able to do in the community.  We also welcome any of your personal experiences as well!  Feel free to pop-in or stay for the duration.........We look forward to seeing you Saturday--

Most sincerely:
Thom Heyer & Peter Yearwood

*PLEASE NOTE--
Mask & proof of vaccination or negative test required to enter event

Are You Interested In Serving On The Roosevelt Island Operating Corp Board Of Directors To Help Set Budget, Land Use Priorities And Oversee RIOC? NY Assembly Member Rebecca Seawright Seeking Roosevelt Island Residents To Recommend For RIOC Board To Governor Kathy Hochul

Are you interested in serving on the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) Board of Directors?

(Ms Seawright seen below talking with Governor Hochul at the November 9 Women In Service Veterans Day Tribute in Central Park)

about selecting new RIOC Board members and is seeking Roosevelt Island residents to recommend to Governor Hochul for nomination.

During the December 10 ribbon cutting and grand opening of the Girl Puzzle Nelly Bly monument at Lighthouse Park, Ms Seawright asked if there were any Roosevelt Island residents interested in serving on the RIOC Board Of Directors.

RIOC Directors are volunteers, receive no pay and must go through a NY State vetting process.

In 2017, former RIOC Director Margie Smith (who was an excellent RIOC Director) explains what a RIOC Director does and why it's important that RIOC Directors are Roosevelt Island residents, namely in terms of setting budget and land use priorities. In theory, RIOC Directors are supposed to provide oversight and set policy for the RIOC staff.

There are currently 2 vacant RIOC Board seats and 1 board seat held by a former resident who moved away yet refuses to resign from the RIOC Board.

As far as I know, there are no plans to hold a Roosevelt Island community election for nominee recommendations for the RIOC Board.

Roosevelt Island's NY State Senator Jose Serrano spoke recently about the importance of future appointments to the RIOC Board at a September 30 Four Freedoms Democratic Club meeting.

If you're interested in serving on the RIOC Board, or not sure and want more info,  please contact Rebecca Seawright.

NYC Test & Trace Mobile Covid Test Van Returning To Roosevelt Island Next Week Says Council Member Elect Julie Menin & Assembly Member Rebecca Seawright, About 1,000 Covid Tests Done Last Week - Menin Adds Covid Vaccination Site Coming To Roosevelt Island Too

As reported December 5:

... Newly-elected Roosevelt Island/Upper East Side NYC Council Member-elect Julie Menin and NY State Assembly Member Rebecca Seawright answered the pleas from residents and immediately worked to bring a NYC Health & Hospitals Test And Trace Mobile Covid Test Unit ...

The Mobil Covid Test Unit was on Roosevelt Island

from December 6 - 12, but not today.

This morning I asked Council Member Elect Julie Menin:

Mobile Covid Testing van is gone today. Do you know if it will be back? Any info on how many tests they did?

Ms Menin replied:

City told me that it will be back next week 12/20-12/24 and will be test and vaccination.

About a 1000 tests for the whole week were done (combined rapid & PCR) but that doesn’t mean 1000 unique individuals as many people opt to have both rapid and PCR together.

I spoke with Ms Seawright on Saturday at the Roosevelt Island Covid 19 mobile test van.

Good job by Roosevelt Island's elected officials Ms Menin and  Ms Seawright.

According to NYC Health Departmen, the most recent 7 Day Covid Testing Data from December 4 - 10  for Roosevelt Island Zip Code 10044 shows 842 people tested and 16 Positive Case for a rate of 1.9%.

As previously reported:

... the 7 Day Covid Testing Data from November 24 - November 30  for Roosevelt Island Zip Code 10044 shows 578 people tested and 15 Positive Case for a rate of 2.6%.

UPDATE - 12/14:

UPDATE 12/15 - According to NYC Health Department, the most recent 7 Day Covid Testing Data from December 6 - 12, when the Covid Mobile Test Van was here on Roosevelt Island (Zip Code 10044 ) shows 973 people tested and 30 Positive Case for a rate of 3.08%.
