Sneak A Peak Inside $4600 Roosevelt Island 2 Bedroom Apartment For Rent - How Has NYC Coronavirus Pandemic Shutdown Effected Roosevelt Island Residential Real Estate Market, Are You Staying Or Looking To Get Out?

Take a look at this 2 bedroom, 2 bath rental apartment at what looks to be the Riverwalk Court Condo building at 415 Main Street.

According to Cash Jordan, the broker in You Tube video:

Manhattan, its where the action is and living here is very convenient but this convenience comes at a cost because Manhattan is loud there's lots of noise and it's not exactly peaceful and that pretty much goes for all of Manhattan except for one specific neighborhood where you can have peace and quiet while still living in New York City's most popular borough. I'm not talking about the Upper West Side I'm not talking about the Upper East Side and I'm certainly not talking about anything downtown. I'm talking about Roosevelt Island....

... This feels like a park with hotels on it. It definitely doesn't feel like downtown or Midtown or even uptown. This seems like a really nice place to live...

...it's just one block from the subway and it's right next to the sky rail
I asked Roosevelt Island resident and real estate agent Kaja Meade:
How has the Coronavirus Pandemic and NYC shutdown effected the Roosevelt Island real estate market?
Ms Meade replied:
There is not enough data to say definitively. Overall activity in the real estate market, and on Roosevelt Island, is lower compared to past years - due to the city policies affecting the ability to do business as usual. Most landlords or owners on the island are on pause. However, there is still activity throughout the city. Over the past couple weeks things in NYC have begun to heat up. People are signing leases on Roosevelt Island.

Overall people should not expect rental prices to dip much. At least not in the long term. I think what folks can expect are an increase in concessions to spike interest and bring clients.

I think what’s important to remember is that this crisis is not based on the housing market/industry, and that NYC is NYC. Even though some (if not many) folks are considering relocating… there will always be people that want to come to the city.

33 Roosevelt Island Deaths Due To Coronavirus As Of Today Includes Coler Nursing Facility Residents Says NYC Health Department - NY State Health Department Says 14 Coronavirus Deaths At Coler But May Be Much Higher Fear Some

As previously reported, the NYC Health Department released detailed Coronavirus demographic data including death and test results by zip code.

As of today, NYC Health Department reports 33 Coronavirus deaths and 797 tests of which 229 were positive for Roosevelt Island zip code 10044.

Click here to view the NYC Coronavirus zip code tracker.

I asked the Mayor's Office:
Do the statistics for 10044 include Coler Nursing and Roosevelt Medical patients.
A NYC Health Department Spokesperson replied:
Deaths are recorded by ZIP code of residence, not by the hospital in which the event occurred. If they are residents of the nursing home, they would be counted under the address of the facility, unless another address of residence is provided.
So, it would appear that Coler Nursing Facility deaths are included for Roosevelt Island 10044 Zip Code but not deaths at the new Roosevelt Medical Center.

According to NY State Health Department data on Nursing Home Fatalities, 13 Coler residents died from Coronavirus plus 1 presumed Coronavirus death.

Sadly, knowledgeable Coler watchers believe the number of deaths at Coler are much higher than the reported 14.

Will update when more info available.

Create Your Own Version Of An Angel Playing a Flageolet Painting by Sir Edward Burne-Jones, Take The Roosevelt Island Coronavirus School Shutdown Virtual Art History Lesson Challenge

Earlier this month we began a Roosevelt Island Art History Lesson Program developed by Roosevelt Island Residents Association (RIRA) Children, Youth & Education Committee Chair Adib Mansour. To date, there have been 6 previous lessons.

The Lesson 7 Art History painting for this week focuses on An Angel Playing a Flageolet, by Sir Edward Burne-Jones, 1878

According to Mr. Mansour:
The painting is not only beautiful but it stands at a historical point where a group of artists that called themselves Pre-Raphaelite painters. They wanted to make a stand to go back to the more simple and detailed work of the Italian art of the 1400s. It is elegant and peaceful.

I encourage more people to print the black and white outline from this lesson or any of the previous 6 lessons. Take the challenge of coloring each of the paintings in the same style as the original and email your work to my email: rirAdib@earthlink.net.

Roosevelt Island Community Garden Re-Opens But Only To Garden Club Members For Now - Coronavirus Pandemic Restrictions Still In Place For Public To Visit Community Garden Says RIOC

As I was walking by the Roosevelt Island Community Garden this past weekend, I noticed people inside and was hoping it  would be open for a Coronavirus Pandemic socially distant stroll.

Unfortunately, signage at the front entrance to the Community Garden says it is currently open only to  Roosevelt Island Garden Club (RIGC) Members

The RIGC explains:
We are closed to the public at this time as part of our agreement with RIOC. This can change over time as restrictions are revised throughout the state and we are no exception. Our community garden has narrow paths, and RIOC is moving carefully with limited access only in order to keep everyone safe. Members must work in their own plots maintaining physical distance. Sunday, May 17th was the day we were able to contact members regarding limited access beginning. So this access has been official for a little more than a week.

Show Support For Return Of Roosevelt Island Food Scrap Composting - Local Advocates Urge Residents To Take Action And Tell NYC Council Member Ben Kallos You Support Purchase Of Compost Machine For Roosevelt Island

As reported last week:

Roosevelt Islanders were very happy with the return of our Saturday Farmers Market to Good Shepherd Plaza last week. But, many were disappointed that the Roosevelt Island Grow NYC Food Scrap Drop Off Collection Bin

did not return as well due to NYC Coronavirus Budget cuts. According to the NYC Department of Sanitation:
In the face of economic hardship, and to ensure the City can continue to devote resources to essential safety, health, and shelter, and food security needs, the New York City Department of Sanitation announced the suspension of the curbside composting program, beginning May 4, 2020. During the suspension, any food scraps and yard waste set out for composting will be collected as trash. The suspension is currently planned through June 30, 2021...
and:
Efforts are being made to bring food scrap composting back to Roosevelt Island and you can help...
According to Roosevelt Island's NYC Council Member Ben Kallos:
At a time when composting has been put on the back burner by the City due to budget constraints resulting from Covid-19. I think Roosevelt Island has an opportunity to become a bastion for composting and an example of a community that's always doing the right things for the environment. Since this year's Participatory Budgeting cycle was canceled I would like to see even more support from Roosevelt Islanders for this initiative. There has to be a groundswell of support for such a project. Anyone who is interested in supporting of the composting machine should email my office at BKallos@benkallos.com

Roosevelt Island resident and iDig2Learn Founder Christina Delfico reports:
Just before the virus hit, Roosevelt Island was primed and ready to get a composting system to supplement ongoing efforts. The Island actually won a single island ballot item - Composting for Roosevelt Island - on the 2020 Participatory Budget ballot just before that program was cancelled. However, the City Budget will be decided June 1st and Roosevelt Islanders can still get a composting machine here to supplement ongoing efforts.

Roosevelt Islanders have already diverted over 133,000 pounds of food scraps from landfill. This machine helps expedite processing food scraps into compost and will supplement our local composting efforts, now more than ever, we need this.

Roosevelt Island Can Still Have Food Scrap Composting - Act Now!

Call to Action for Tuesday, May 26th to Friday, May 29th - Roosevelt Islanders please take a moment to write to City Council Member Ben Kallos to thank him for supporting composting on Roosevelt Island and ask him to fund a Composter for Roosevelt Island.

Write to: BKallos@benkallos.com

In addition to writing to City Council Member Kallos, Islanders can fill out this RI Compost interest form created to build up a compost collective on Roosevelt Island.

NYC Emergency Room Doctor Craig Spencer Survived Ebola In West Africa, Now Battling Coronavirus, Watch A Day In His Life Treating Patients - NY Times Remembers !00 Thousand Who Died And Shows One Of NYC Deadliest Covid 19 Zip Codes, At Least 32 Deaths From Virus On Roosevelt Island

According to AJ+ You Tube page:

Dr. Craig Spencer fought Ebola in West Africa while working with Doctors Without Borders, and now he’s an emergency room doctor in New York City, at the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic. This is a day in his life on the front line of the battle against COVID-19.

“Your hands upon theirs. You think of their family. At home. Sobbing,” he writes in this up-close dispatch from a city on lockdown ,with hospitals overflowing, family members losing loved ones over FaceTime, and colleagues running out of personal protective equipment. Spencer’s day in an ER is brought to life with animated illustrations.
