Happy Saturday Night - Enjoy Video Of Stomp Society Swing Band Performing I Want You To Be My Baby By Louis Prima At The Roosevelt Island Sanctuary Events/Cafe Space

The Stomp Society Swing Band:

... is a high-energy, electrifying NYC-based swing band that specializes in the 1920s–1950s dance music which was known as the "Swing Era." They are a 5 to 6-piece mini big band that will captivate your attention with their amazing charismatic players! They are a throwback to the best decades where the showmanship of big bands focused on the players, each being an important solo voice. They are a showstopper!...
They recently performed at The Roosevelt Island Sancturay Events Space/Cafe.

Come In Costume For Return Of The Roosevelt Island Main Street Halloween Parade And More Harvest Extravaganza Fun At Southpoint Park Saturday October 29 - Trick Or Treat Halloween Dog Party Too

This is a pleasant surprise.

The Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) announced earlier this week that the Main Street Halloween Parade will take place Saturday, October 29, after previously saying it would not be part of this year's Halloween festivities.

RIOC President Shelton Haynes reported to the October 20 RIOC Board of Directors meeting that the Main Street Halloween Parade would not be part of this year's Roosevelt Island Halloween festivities at Southpoint Park but would return in 2023.

On October 14, I asked RIOC Public Information Officer Akeem Jamal:

The Roosevelt Island Main Street Halloween Parade has been a tradition enjoyed by residents for many years. I believe 35 years.

It may be understandable that the parade did not happen during the worst of COVID but now that we are getting back to normal, why is the Main Street Halloween Parade being replaced by an event at Southpoint Park? Any comment from Rioc?

Mr Jamal replied on October 17:

There is no comment at this time from RIOC. With a new communications team slowly coming on board, we hope to get back to where we were soon pre-pandemic and raise the bar!

Great news that RIOC is bringing back the Main Street Halloween Parade this year.

More details on the Roosevelt Island Halloween Extravaganza from RIOC:

The Halloween Parade and Extravaganza will be held this Saturday, October 29th! Parade participants will gather at 10:15 AM at Capobianco Field (opposite 595 Main Street) and proceed down Main Street to South Point Park for the Extravaganza.  South Point Park for the Extravaganza.  Rain date Sunday, October 30th.

You're Invited To A Roosevelt Island Artist Salon, The Subject Is Music And The Conversation Is With Classical Pianist/Advertising Legend Roy Eaton And Hip Hop Music Producer Vince Pierce Thursday October 27 At Good Shepherd Chapel Sanctuary

OPEN DOORS NYC Program Associate Alex Eshelman reports:

OPEN DOORS is sponsoring a series of free public salons hosted by Roosevelt Islander Thom Heyer. The premise is to bring together two island residents who are involved in a similar discipline of the Arts, but approach it in different ways. This will be the first of five salons which Thom will be presenting every two months, from now through June 2023. The first salon, entitled "The Subject is Music", will pair Roy Eaton: a classically trained pianist & composer with Vince Pierce: a spoken word/hip-hop musician and producer. Thom will be presenting his guests in an intimate setting with time for Q&A afterwards. Join them this coming Thursday, October 27th at 7pm at the Chapel of the Good Shepherd. The event is FREE. Masks and hand sanitizer will be offered, but not mandatory.

This event is also available to join via Zoom if you're not in town or are unable to attend in person! You can join the call with this link or with the QR code on the flyer, full invitation below.

We really look forward to seeing everyone who can make it on Thursday! I'm really excited about these salons and think it'll be a cool atmosphere for us all to share. Feel free to bring friends along, I reiterate, this event is FREE!

Due to NY State Senate re-districting, in all likelihood Liz Krueger will become the next State Senator representing Roosevelt Island starting in January 2023 if as expected she wins the upcoming 2022 General Election.

Earlier today, Ms Krueger met with a group of Roosevelt Island residents to discuss community issues.

Among the issues discussed were:
  • RIOC Governance of Roosevelt Island,
  • Election of RIOC Board of Directors,
  • Adding to Roosevelt Island green space at Lighthouse Park,
  • Assistance for local non profit organizations,
  • Congestion Pricing Waiver For Roosevelt Island residents (not going to happen),
  • Helicopter noise and safety issues,
  • Upcoming NY State Governor Election ( Can Governor Hochul lose asks one resident? She can lose if people don't come out to voter says Krueger),
  • Lights from Manhattan, including Rockefeller University shining into Roosevelt Island apartments.

 Here's what happened.
