Constitution Week is the commemoration of America's most important document. It is celebrated annually during the week of September 17-23.
The United States Constitution stands as a testament to the tenacity of Americans throughout history to maintain their liberties, freedoms and inalienable rights.
This celebration of the Constitution was started by the Daughters of the American Revolution. In 1955, DAR petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was later adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into public law on August 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower...
Constitution Week was celebrated locally last Friday, September 17, at the Roosevelt Island NY Public Library branch. Roosevelt Island resident Lynn Strong-Shinozaki reports:
We met at the Roosvelt Island Library last Friday to promote awareness of Constitution Week, a National Celebration to bring renewed awareness to the awesome document that our Country is based on.
We expect some powerful rain today and a flash flood watch is in effect. We could see an inch of rain over the course of one hour. Take this weather seriously and exercise caution, especially on your commute or if you live in a basement apartment. Follow @NotifyNYC for more. pic.twitter.com/EqevmhN7WJ

Leonardo Suarez Paz and Olga Suarez Paz are Roosevelt Island residents and

Leonardo is the Artistic Director and Olga the Executive Director of
PIAZZOLLA 100:
... an interdisciplinary performing arts project that showcases a
groundbreaking new style, which draws on the common roots of Tango, Jazz and
Classical Music, as shaped by the culture of African and European migration
to the new world. Celebrating the centennial of Leonardo
Suarez Paz’s mentor and family friend, Astor Piazzolla, who was born in Mar
de Plata, Argentina in 1921 and grew up in New York City, the project
honors the legacy of this revolutionary composer by demonstrating the genre
as a complex, evolving art form, while challenging artistic
and sociocultural constructs. Our missionis to further the genre of Nuevo Tango by elevating its artistic standards
through live performances, recordings, publications and education, by
demonstrating its evolution as an entire culture through every form of
expression - music, dance, interdisciplinary work, visual art, literature
and cinema. We celebrate Latin, African and European cultural
heritages, the contributions of immigrants and women to the genre,
while relating its history to Buenos Aires and New York City and affording
an opportunity for artists across generations, cultures, genres and
disciplines to create new work and express through a renewed artistic idiom
of cultural unity and inclusion....
Leonardo & Olga Suarez Paz were featured in the
Dear New York TV program
earlier this month. Watch this video to learn more about the artistic
Roosevelt Island couple.
Celebrating the centennial of his mentor, Astor Piazzolla, an Argentine-born

GRAMMY-nominated group to the forefront of 21st century Nuevo Tango. A
“virtuoso extraordinaire on the violin” (Wynton Marsalis), he brings forth a
new vision of Argentina’s rich culture with an “ingenious musical concept,”
(The Day, CT) - the classical string quartet that “personifies and embodies
the authentic spirit of Tango” (Latin Grammy).

Mid September is the the opening of the
United Nations General Assembly Session and 2021 is no different than previous years in terms of its impact on
Roosevelt Island residents. The opening of the UN General Assembly means the
diversion of East River boat traffic to the Roosevelt Island East Channel
Queens side for security precautions due to our proximity to the United Nations
resulting in the intermittent closings of the Roosevelt Island Bridge.
According to the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC):
The United Nations General Assembly will take place from Monday, 9/20 to
Saturday, 9/25. During this time, the Roosevelt Island bridge will open on
demand from 7 AM to 7 PM. Please be advised that each opening should take
anywhere from 8 to 12 minutes to be completed.
As a reminder, during the opening and lowering of the Roosevelt Island bridge,
some delays may occur.
This afternoon, the Roosevelt Island Bridge got stuck during opening and closing causing lines and delays on both sides of the Bridge for about a half hour.
Have not heard of any similar incidents earlier this week.
Residents have expressed concern about the Roosevelt Island Bridge being closed preventing emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire trucks from getting on and off Roosevelt Island. There was no mention by RIOC about precautions being taken for emergency vehicles but an ambulance is stationed on the Island during UN General Assembly Week.
Even British PM Boris Johnson had to make alternative travel arrangements during 2021 UN General Assembly Week.
You know East Side traffic must be bad when British prime minister Boris Johnson decides to speed walk to the UN with his security detail. #unga@ABC7NYpic.twitter.com/Mg79ZDJBlY
UPDATE 9/24 - View of raised Roosevelt Island Bridge from passing sailboat on East River east channel.
During last night's Roosevelt Island Emergency Preparedness workshop, RIOC Public Safety Chief Kevin Brown and Deputy Chief Anthony Amoroso discussed some of the security and safety preparations undertaken during UN General Assembly Week for the Roosevelt Island Bridge.
