Removal Of Pool Table Reveals Long Simmering Tensions Between One Year Old Carter Burden Network Roosevelt Island Senior Center And Roosevelt Island Seniors Association

The removal of a pool table at the Carter Burden Network Roosevelt Island Senior Center has brought into the open long simmering tensions between the one year old Senior Center and the Roosevelt Island Seniors Association (RISA).

According to this excerpt from a July 20 letter sent by the RISA Board and Officers to the Carter Burden Network Board Of Directors:

On Saturday, July 15, The Roosevelt Island Carter-Burden Center, in the person of Lisa Fernandez, an employee, removed and disposed of the large antique pool table from the Roosevelt Island Senior Center located at 546 Main Street....

... This was property that was not Carter-Burden’s to remove and certainly not without RISA’s approval....
I asked Carter Burden Network Roosevelt Island Senior Center Executive Director Lisa Fernandez why the pool table was removed.

Ms Fernandez explained that the Pool Table was removed to add a comfortable seating area for Seniors with newly donated chairs from Cornell Tech's former location at Google.

Ms Fernandez added:

Is RIOC Coordinating With MTA For Full Roosevelt Island Weekend F Train Service During 6 Month Tram Station Repairs & Single Tram Cabin Operation? Good News For This Weekend, Roosevelt Island F Train Service To And From Manhattan

A Roosevelt Island resident asked:

Does anyone know if they are coordinating with MTA to ensure there is F train service during this time?
During the July 24 Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) Operations Advisory Committee meeting, I asked if the weekend F Train service disruptions will occur during the duration of Tram Station repairs and single service Tram Cabin service.

RIOC Director Of Operations Shelton Haynes replied the MTA advised RIOC that the regular, routine weekend Roosevelt Island F Train service interruptions will not occur during the Tram Station Repairs and Single Cabin Service period. But in the event of an emergency, there still may be Roosevelt Island weekend  F train service interruptions.

Good news for this weekend.

RISA invites You To July 25 Screening For Echoes Of History Documentary - Featuring Interviews With Roosevelt Island Seniors About Life During President Franklin D. Roosevelt Era

Roosevelt Island Seniors Association (RISA) President Barbara Parker reports:

Hi Everyone,

In 2016, Four Freedoms Park Conservancy launched a new initiative that paired two high school interns from Studio in a School’s Bloomberg Arts & Culture Internship Program with a documentary filmmaker

to capture and document stories from older New Yorkers who lived during the FDR era, including members of the Roosevelt Island community.

Using an inter generational approach that introduces young historians to FDR’s policies through interviews with the people directly affected by them, these stories will not only remind people of the tremendous impact Roosevelt had on this country, but connect a younger generation to a political legacy that continues to shape their lives today.

RISA will be sharing this wonderful documentary with the community Tuesday, July 25th) from 6:30-7:30pm at the Senior Center, 546 Main Street - 12th floor Multipurpose Room.

Hope you all can join us.

Plane's Flight Path Returning Home To Roosevelt Island Gives Wonderful View Of Governor's Island, Brooklyn, Lower/Midtown Manhattan East River Waterfront & Queens

Always glad returning home to Roosevelt Island after a trip out of town. Even better when the view from my plane's flight path travels over Governor's Island, Brooklyn, Lower/Midtown Manhattan, East River Waterfront and Queens on the way to landing at LaGuardia Airport.

Enjoy the view.

The view taking off over Boston Harbor was pretty good too.
