Roosevelt Island resident Karen Lee invites you to an art exhibit that shows us how to survive the NYC Plastic Bag Ban.

According to Ms Lee:

Come see an ART INSTALLATION that might inspire you to think outside the plastic bag.

Pick up some tips that can minimize your need for a plastic bag.

Get a glimpse of how our recyclables get processed. Learn what really matters.

Learn some easy tips on how to fit kitchen scrap drop off that into your life.

Come share your ideas and learn a few tips from many who are trying to minimize what ends up in landfill.

Bring an item that you aren’t sure whether it’s trash or recyclable. If you don’t have a used battery drop off in your building -bring it.

Saturday February 29th 2:00-5:00pm.

Child Center Of New York Roosevelt Island Beacon Program At PS/IS 217 Hosting Upcoming Community Health Fair Featuring Wellness And Nutrition Resources - Looking For Volunteers To Help

The Child Center Of NY Roosevelt Island Beacon Program at PS/IS 217 is hosting an upcoming  Health Fair and is seeking community partners to participate:

Roosevelt Island Beacon would love for you to be a part of our Annual Health Fair on April 17th! We are looking for community partners to volunteer their time during our health fair, in connecting our families to wellness services and introduce them to healthier food choices.

We're reaching out to your program/organization to host a table that will feature one or more of the following: free samples, menus, posters, and other health/nutrition based resources that you offer.

Please respond to confirm your attendance by Friday, March 13th. If you are unable to attend we welcome you to refer another possible partner as an alternate.

Good News, Roosevelt Island F Train Service To And From Manhattan This Weekend, E Train Service Too - Watch Video Of MTA Presentation On Roosevelt Island Subway Service

According to the MTA there will be Roosevelt Island F Train service

to and from Manhattan this weekend. E train service too.

Both Roosevelt Island Tram cabins are operating and here's the NYC Ferry Roosevelt Island Astoria Route Winter Schedule.

Roosevelt Island Citibike Deal About To Get Done For Spring Roll Out Says RIOC - But Changes May Be Necessary For Two Proposed Locations And Is This What Residents Want?

Well, based upon the February 26 Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) Real Estate Development Advisory Committee discussion, it appears that the deal is done and there will be Roosevelt Island Citibike sharing stations here this spring.

The Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) Board of Directors Operations Advisory Committee and Audit Committee are meeting tomorrow, February 27.

According to RIOC:

Roosevelt Island Citibike Service, Motogate Bike Lane/Ramp, Island House/Westview Lease Amendments & MTA Strecker Lab Building Redesign On RIOC Real Estate Committee Meeting Agenda For February 26

Roosevelt Island is surrounded by Citibike sharing stations in Queens and Manhattan

but none on Roosevelt Island.

The answer to the question when Roosevelt Island will get Citibike docking stations may be more clear after tomorrow's Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) Real Estate Development Advisory Committee (REDAC) meeting.

You're Invited To Roosevelt Island Cornell Tech Construction & Community Task Force Meeting February 26, Update On Hotel, Conference Center & More - Also Watch Video Introduction Of First Year Cornell Tech Dean Greg Morrisett, A New Roosevelt Island Resident

The Cornell Tech Construction & Community Task Force meets quarterly to keep the Roosevelt Island community informed and maintain an open dialogue with resident Task Force members of the community who are appointed by local elected officials - Congresswoman Maloney, State Senator Serrano, State Assembly Member Seawright, Manhattan Borough President Brewer, NYC Council Member Kallos and Community Board 8.

The Task Force is meeting tomorrow February 26 at the Bloomberg Academic Center from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM and the public is invited to attend as well. Among items on the Agenda are:

  • Updates on Hotel & Verizon Executive Education Center construction and operations;
  • Community Engagement presentation;
  • Q&A; 
  • All welcome; rsvp to (not required but simplifies getting through security)

During the November 12, 2019 Task Force meeting, the new Cornell Tech Dean Greg Morrisett, who started in August 2019,  introduced himself to the community. Dean Morrisett is a Roosevelt Island resident, living on campus with his wife Tania.

Roosevelt Island Student Environmental Heroes Giving Away Free Reusable Bags Wednesday February 26 At Local Foodtown Supermarket - NYC Plastic Bag Ban Starts March 1

The New York City Plastic Bag ban begins Sunday March 1.

Roosevelt Island Residents Association (RIRA) Children, Youth & Education Ad Hoc Committee Chair Adib Mansour reports:
As you may already know, plastic bags will be banned in New York City as of March 1st. RIRA’s Children, Youth & Education Committee has been teaching the youth at the Child Center of NY about sound environmental practices. They have become Roosevelt Island’s:
“Environmental Heroes.”
 Come join our youth at the new FoodTown and receive a free reusable bag, donated by the generosity of:
Borough President Gale Brewer, Council Member Ben Kallos, RIOC President Susan Rosenthal.
