Sponsored Post - NYC Office Of Emergency Management Wants You To Know Your Hurricane Zone And Be Prepared - Roosevelt Island Is Zone 2 & 3

The New York City Office of Emergency Management (NYC OEM) wants you to be prepared and Know Your Hurricane Evacuation Zone.

According to the NYC OEM:

It’s Hurricane Season: Make Sure You Know Your Zone and Have a Plan

Hurricane Sandy left an indelible mark on the minds of all New Yorkers, but especially for the residents that experienced some of the storm’s most devastating impacts. New York City’s geography makes it especially vulnerable to wind and flooding. With sustained winds of more than 74 mph, hurricanes can flatten homes, topple trees and turn loose objects into deadly projectiles. Storm surge, the “dome” of ocean water that is pushed ashore by the winds and low barometric pressure of a hurricane, is the most serious hurricane-related hazard. And a storm’s driving winds and torrential rains can cause massive and dangerous flooding in low-lying and poor-drainage areas.

To ensure that New Yorkers are prepared for the 2017 hurricane season, which runs from June 1 through November 30, the New York City Emergency Management Department is urging everyone to take steps to be ready if a storm approaches. Roughly three million New Yorkers live within the city’s six hurricane evacuation zones, which were revised in 2013. Hurricane evacuation zones are based on coastal flood risk resulting from storm surge, the geography of the city’s low-lying neighborhoods, and the accessibility of these neighborhoods by bridges and roads. The City may order residents who live in a zone to evacuate depending on a hurricane’s forecasted strength, track, and storm surge. If you are ordered to evacuate as a storm approaches, do so as directed.

NYC Emergency Management encourages residents to take key steps to prepare for hurricane season:

Know Your Zone – Find out whether you live in one of the City’s six hurricane evacuation zones by using the Hurricane Evacuation Zone Finder or calling 311 (212-639-9675 for video Relay service, or TTY: 212-504-4115). If you live in a hurricane evacuation zone, have a plan for where you will go if an evacuation order is issued for your area. The City strongly recommends that evacuees stay with friends or family who live outside evacuation zones. For those who have no other shelter, the City will open evacuation centers throughout the five boroughs. Consult the Hurricane Evacuation Zone Finder or call 311 to identify which evacuation center is most appropriate for you.

Make a Plan – Make a plan so you know what to do, how to find each other, and how to communicate if a hurricane strikes.

Stay informed – Sign up to receive emergency updates and information online and via e-mail, text, phone, and Twitter through the City’s free Notify NYC program. Visit NYC.gov/notifynyc or call 311 to sign up.

Visit the NYC Know Your Zone website at NYC.gov/knowyourzone or call 311 for more information about the city’s hurricane evacuation zones, hurricane hazards, and tips to prepare for storms.

Roosevelt Island Tram Platform Repairs Begin July 24 - Only 1 Tram Cabin Running At A Time, May Take Up To 6 Months

Ratso asked yesterday:

I hear that there will only 1 Tram beginning July 17th. Is this true? The reason is to fix the stations. It is supposed to last for 2 or 3 months. Can anyone verify this as fact??
I replied:
Yes. It is true. It may be up to 6 months of only 1 tram cabin running.

Today the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) announced:
TRAM PLATFORM REPAIRS

Beginning July 24th

RIOC’s Infrastructure Improvement Plan includes much needed repairs to both the Manhattan and Roosevelt Island Tram Stations.

Unfortunately, improvements cannot be made without inconvenience. Please bear with us to ensure no tripping, and no slipping!

During this time, RIOC will provide free Red Bus service between Roosevelt Island and Manhattan.

We apologize in advance but our stations will be new and improved!

Thanks for your understanding,

RIOC Management Team

RIOC President Susan Rosenthal discussed the Tram Platform repairs and inconveniences to residents during May 25 RIOC Board meeting.

SPONSORED POST - Roosevelt Island Urgent Care Medical Facility, Just Walk In At 520 Main Street 7 Days A Week For Your Medical Needs - Adult & Child CPR Training Info Too

According to Roosevelt Island Urgent Care (RIUC):

Our Roosevelt Island facility is  located at 520 Main Street.

The medical needs of this 2 mile long historic island on the East River is a perfect landscape for our services.

RIUC is the first health care facility on the Island. Currently local residents must travel to either Manhattan or Astoria, for treatment—a trip that requires the use of a tram, subway, bus or car. Our facility in essence created a full-service medical center for a growing population of 15,000. RIUC is here to serve your needs.

These needs will increase in the near future with the addition of new multi-family developments and the new Cornell NYC Tech campus, which is under construction and due to open this year. The University is relying on our center to tend to the medical needs of the students and faculty. Roosevelt Island Urgent Care is also well positioned to provide services to the many construction workers who are on the Island during the next few years.

Other amenities include:
  • Hot and cold complimentary beverage center
  • Charging station
  • Flat screen TV in waiting room as well as every exam room
  • Childrens play area
  • And much more!

Roosevelt Island Urgent Care Community Liaison Adib Mansour adds:
The Roosevelt Island Urgent Care Center gave RIRA’s Hands-Only CPR committee a helping hand (and office use) to teach our islanders life-saving lessons.

The RI Urgent Care Center offered its offices for training the trainers in preparation for Roosevelt Island Day. The center is also working on offering its space for weekly trainings in cooperation with RIRA’s Children, Youth & Education Committee and RIRA Hands-Free CPR Committee for the youth, as well as other groups.

RIRA’s Hands-Free CPR has thus far trained 1,199 islanders, including 77 on the morning of the last Roosevelt Island Day with the help of the RI Urgent Care Center’s Monica Vega.

Late last year, the Care Center’s Brand Manager Yaakov Landau presented the Hands-Free CPR Committee with an infant CPR doll when he found out it did not have one.

“I thought it was a crucial addition to the program in order to cover all residents on the island”. He explains that Hands-Only CPR is CPR “without mouth-to-mouth breaths and is recommended for use by people who see a teen or adult suddenly collapse in an “out-of-hospital” setting such as at home, at work or in a park”.

The Urgent Care Center designed and printed a brochure with Infants and Adults Hands Free CPR instruction which were distributed during Roosevelt Island Day (and is available here).

In the meantime, The Roosevelt Island Urgent Care (Kāmin Health Urgent Care Center on Roosevelt Island) is looking to hire a full time X-Ray Technician. For more information, or to submit a resumé, please email: Yaakov@kaminhealth.com.

What Does Roosevelt Island Think Of President Donald Trump - Making America Great Again Or Leading America To Decline?

Donald Trump has at least 1 supporter on Roosevelt Island. The resident who comments frequently praising President Trump under the name Frank Alo writes today:

So proud of our president. He gave a great speech to the Polish people. Keep up the good work. America loves you
and yesterday:
the labor department says that 222,000 jobs were created in june. This is good news for president Trump. But of course the liberal newspapers will never report any thing good about our president. So all you island liberals need me to put it on the rooseveil islander to keep you all informed. And let's not forget all you liberals making money on wall Street. You all have president Trump to thank for that. Our president is doing a great job. God bless him...
