Don't Leave Your Roosevelt Island Zipcar Running On Empty Without Enough Gas For The Next Guy

Received the following message earlier this week from a Roosevelt Island Zipcar user unhappy with fellow Zipcar users failing to follow proper Zipcar gas etiquette:
We picked up a car on Saturday from Motorgate that had less than a 1/4 tank of gas, and we picked up a car today from the Octagon that had the fuel light blinking because it was on empty.

People should remember that, not only is it required by the Zipcar rules that you return the car with at least a 1/4 tank of gas, but it's not polite to leave people in a spot where they have the car for an hour to get dropped off at work and the fuel light is blinking. Also - If you find yourself in the position where you do have a short reservation and no gas, when you call to report the person who used the car before you leaving the car without fuel, Zipcar will give you an extra 1/2 hour of driving credit to fill the tank up.
Here's a video from Zipcar that shows you how easy it is to fill up the gas tank so you don't leave your Roosevelt Island neighbor running on empty.

Those pesky Southtown residents are at it again, ruining our quality of life with their overbearing car culture!

Actually zipcars reduce vehicle ownership, traffic and use because 1000's of people share the same couple of cars. Zipcars are also located at motorgate.

Anonymous said...

We should have congestion pricing on the island. Toll the bridge.

Anonymous said...

The above blog states that"Zipcars are also located at motorgate".
Why are they not all located there?

JPH said...

Some are at southtown, some at motorgate and some at the octagon. No reason why they should all be at motirgate if others have parking space to sell.

to the 505pm poster:

It cant be us Southtown residents, we have too much money for the need for Zip-cars. I know I wouldnt be caught dead seen in one of those. Besides, I dont think they even allow our dogs!

I doubt it could be the Mid-Island residents so it must be the Northtown residents.

You are a freekin Moron for posting such ridiculous slander.

To the last poster- too funny-this is why the attitude of a divide does exist.. what you wrote..

I am a Northtown resident for 28.5 years- WV to be exact.

I could care less about the zipcars, it is the attitude of some of the newer Residents at Southtown and "The Octagon" that help fuel comments like the first poster.

This is a small island-that was once all united and got along fine-with the MSK and Cornell buildings coming first in Southtown-there was no problem with an attitude- after that-it changed...

Main Street-where we have been for years and years is a mess-we, the people who have lived here a long time, seen it all, fought for it all, cannot even get the stores that serviced us for years...

That is a total shame and disgrace..

Lose your attitude-with you "have too much money", your "dogs", etc.

This Island is now a mess and the basic tenets of its development and founding -out of the window...

We all have to share this one small strip of land-at least try and be civil.

FYI-"Mid-Island" Residents reside in Northtown-that is what our buildings are officially under.

JEEZ....

Actually the post above, long term resident, was mocking the absurd stereotype that the first poster was trying to put forward. I want to know one incident where someone from another building other than your own has done anything to you to give you this warped stereotype of the snobby newcomer. Im talking about the individual act of a person not the conspiracy theories you put on a group. The exact idea that people in these buildings think a different way is exactly the kind of stereotype you are trying to avoid and the same bizarre class warfare that rira tried to state in their housing report. Please refrain with it because it exists only inside your mind.

The "warped stereotype of the snobby newcomer" is reinforced every time the Red Octagon Express Bus partially empty bypasses
other islanders in Northtown.
With the new routing of the MTA bus maybe all Red Busses should make all stops.

The idea of a toll on Roosevelt Island bridge is a good one, but would not necessarily clear up Main Street.
RIOC need to limit trucks of all sizes from Main Street during rush hours and to consider having school busses pick-up and deliver students under the ramp (where they park already)until PSD get all the "privileged" cars off Main Street.

Anonymous said...

Wow. To me, the first post seemed like it was written in joking irony. Apparently not!

The Octagon pays to staff and fuel a rush hour express bus to make that far-away building more convenient to the subway and tram for its residents.

There are many other buses that whiz by the Main Street bus stops partially empty ... from Coler-Goldwater, the schools, etc. Should they also stop to pick you up?

Here we go again. Actually most of roosevelt island is a happy place and people get along quite well. Rira has membership from all the buildings and people live here because they like the diversity. Cars were here before southtown and the octagon. However it is truthful that people don't like people like yourself that perpetuate class warfare. So you are actually accurate that the new people that come to this island do not care for you and your entitled snob attitude towards anyone who came after you. You are the snob. They dont like you however they like everyone else because 99 percent of this island gets along well and doesn't look at the world with your warped world view. I suggest you give your home back to the native americans as they do have a valid argument that You invaded their home. Until you do that I suggest you try to talk to someone outside of your building. The put their pants on the same way as you.

So funny how Island residents need to feel superior to other Island residents. Let's face it, you all live on what was formerly known as WELFARE Island! Let's face it, anybody with money and taste would NOT live here.

To the last poster, I have lived here 3 years and think this is the best place to live in all of NYC!!!!

Anonymous said...

My favorite aspect of Roosevelt Island is the nightlife. Best in NYC!

The entire point of this post is to encourage neighborly behavior amongst fellow zipcar users. Zipcar car sharing allows a large number of people to share a total 10 cars across the entire island. The cars are distributed throughout the island for the convenience of users in different buildings.

It's inconsiderate of fellow zipcar users to not fill up the tank (zipcar pays for the gas and it takes 10 minutes).

Why? I need to feel better about living in this dismal housing project.

Anonymous said...

1) The Octagon is paying the RIOC some good coin for the red bus service. It is a private bus service and has nothing to do with folks not living at the Octagon. If you want the same service for your building convince management to pay for it.

2) I am all for banning cars from Roosevelt Island. Ban them into the garage. Zip car would be a perfect service to replace individual car ownership.

3) I am not going to get into the "class warfare" that is continuously being done here and on the old Roosevelt Island 360 blog. It is plain stupid and ridiculous. As somebody said above the majority of people get along very well. It's only that sad 1 or 2 percent that are the loudest and try to ruin it for everybody. And then we will hear Katz and company about how unhappy people are here and how everything stinks, etc. etc.

Joe-

whats the point in your message, very well stated and is right on target, as you can see the other posts are just head-banging material.

Do South-town residents ever walk up Main Street just for the heck of it maybe to browse the stores or even just simply sit in the Church plaza and soak up the rays and atmosphere?

Anonymous said...

Uh, yes, they do. Some actually walk all the way up to the light house. Poster form 12:09am what are you trying to say? Oh, we do avoid Trellis, though.

It appears that Southtown residents also feel they are above the law and have no respect for others on the island. The number of unleashed dogs in the open area between Southtown and Blackwell Park has increased enormously over the last few years. These newcomers just feel they can do what they want. Time to ban their stupid dogs once and for all!!!

Anonymous said...

Ban the New Comers ... Ban the Dogs ... Ban the Cars ... Ban the Birds, Ban the Red Bus ... Ban PSD ... Ban the Squirrels ... Ban the New Tram ... Ban the Subway (maybe just ban the MTA) This all seems like way too much work. Lets just ban the residents that have been living here too long. Us 'new comers' are here to stay and paid a lot of money to come - you dont like it - Leave!!!

I Still dont get how this all came about because some jerk (old timer or New comer, Dog Lover or hater) dosnt refill his Zip-Car???

Anonymous said...

Agreed with the post above. Why do the "newcomers" feel this island is their dogs personal playground. All we are asking you to do is follow the same rules as everyone else.

Is that too much to ask.....

The anonymous blogger at 11.09 apparently did not look into the
way we of life on Roosevelt Island
- which is the way preferred by most residents including newcomers.

Maybe he should consider another move instead of trying to change the character of a beloved place that he seems not to like.

To the Blog Editor:

Please remove the comments to this posting regarding the ZipCar.

The remarks posted, starting with the first that incites -hatred- towards a particular group, then going off on tangents with other hatreds: other residents, dogs, red bus, class warfare. All these comments not relevant to the subject and presents a disgusting facet that is truly offensive to the majority of residents here on the Island.

Thank you-

Businesses catering to the Island's dog-owners such as a dog spa, a dog grooming business, a dog therapist, dog yoga center, entertainment center for dogs, dog boarding/walking business, in addition to a conventional pet store, could one day occupy the empty store-fronts on RI. Many dogs are cooped up throughout the day and can become neurotic and resentful with confinement, or just simply bored. Businesses such as the above fill a need by providing the animal companions with daytime variety/activity.

You think the Managers of the Zip Car Program will ever dig them out of their parking spots? I guess they're waiting for the 1st 'schlep' needing a car to come around and clean all theat snow off and around them.
