NYPD Scooter Presence Returns To Roosevelt Island, But Just For The Day - January/ February Monthly Public Safety Incident Blotter Too

We learned last week:
that Roosevelt Island's only assigned NYPD officer would no longer be patrolling our Island and that another NYPD officer would not be assigned as a replacement.
So, I was surprised to see two NYPD scooters parked on Main Street in Southtown today. Did the 114th NYPD Precinct Commander have a change of mind and decide to replace the departing Roosevelt Island officer with new officers?

Unfortunately, the answer is no. The officers were assigned to Roosevelt Island today as part of the security presence due to President Obama'a visit in NYC today.

Below are the Roosevelt Island January and February 2011 Public Safety Blotters which report in greater detail the type of incidents which the Public Safety Department and NYPD, when called upon, respond to.

It would be helpful for all Roosevelt Island residents to have access to the specific information contained in the Monthly Blotter on a more timely basis than every month or so. Perhaps RIOC and Public Safety can provide this information on a weekly basis. Unfortunately, the Daily Public Safety Reports do not contain any specificity regarding the time, place, or seriousness of any particular incident.

Agreed - more info is needed on a more timely basis so it can be promptly disseminated by island media.

Not providing it as soon as possible gives the impression that information, if not exactly being withheld by PSD, is at least being manipulated so as to make the island seem "safer" than it really is.

The Wire used to print the very enlightening Police Blotter column for years, but then discontinued it, referring readers to the Wire website instead. But not all Wire readers have internet access (although internet access is almost ubiquitous by now). And it's much better to prominently make this information available to island residents while they have the Wire in their hands, it's much more convenient.

Getting the Police Blotter removed from the Wire just continued the illusion that RI is some sort of no-crime incident-free oasis, an illusion which the development companies are all too eager to promote so as to support their pitch to possible apt buyers/renters that "RI is a safe place to live". Just a cursory review of the Police Blotter that is now released by PSD shows that except (thank goodness) for the absence of major crimes incidents, RI has as many incidents of all kinds as any other place.

So, yes - I agree with Rick - PSD should make available to island media all the police blotter information on a contining basis as soon as it available, not provide it weeks after the incidents have occurred.

Plus my personal request to Dick - please consider reinstating the Police Blotter item you used to run in the Wire. This is the best way to get all the detailed crime information into all the residents' hands on an ongoing basis especially so for those residents who may not wish to hunt around on the internet in order to read to read a lengthy report on a computer screen.

But whether the information appears on the blog or in newsprint - one thing is for sure - providing it is part of the public service aspect of newspapers/blogs and benefits all residents. I hope Ms. Torres accordingly directs the PSD to make this detailed Blotter information fully available to island media as it becomes available and not weeks and weeks after the incidents have occurred.
