No Roosevelt Island F Train Service From Manhattan This Weekend and Later This Month, RIOC To Extend Red Bus and Tram Service But Doesn't Say How - Bring Back the East River Slingshot?

Click To Enlarge Image From RIOC

As reported in post earlier this week, there will be no Queens bound F Train subway service from Manhattan to Roosevelt Island this weekend. The Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) issued the following advisory today:
Please note, RIOC will be extending Red Bus and Tram service during the disruption.

Please be advised per an advisory received from the MTA, there will be no Queens bound F train service via 53rd Street at Roosevelt Island from 12:01 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. on the following dates:

Saturday, April 2nd to Monday, April 4th

Saturday, April 9th to Monday, April 11th

Saturday, April 23rd to Monday, April 25th

Sincerely,

Roosevelt Island Operating Corp Advisories Group
Upon receipt of the advisory, I inquired of RIOC Vice President of Operations Fernando Martinez:
The advisory below does not mention how RIOC will be extending red bus and tram service during this weekend's subway disruption.

What is the extended service for the tram and red bus?
Will provide an update to this post if and when a response is received.

Perhaps we need to bring back the Roosevelt Island Slingshot and install it on the Manhattan side to help Roosevelt Island residents cross the East River these next few weekends.

Wait, is that midnight to 5am, or to 5pm? The image says pm, but the advisory that you copied seems to indicate am.

This makes some sort of differences...

The RIOC image is wrong - it's 5 AM as written in the post according to the MTA web site. Good catch Nicolas, thank you.

To the poster Jr, NEWSFLASH, there is work done on all subways lines on the weekend. While I am new to RI and love it, you must be new to NY.

JR is a known troll who moved over from the rooseveltislander360 blog. He (her?) keeps posting under so many different handles. The best advise to defeat trolls: don't feed them.

Jr...do you mean " living ON Manhattan " ?

btw RI is part of Manhattan and let me ask, is the government paying your rent and do you have a Con Ed power bill?

Are you living on my dime?

NYC provides too much free housing and cheap housing to way too many. Those people work the system and cheat it...there are elderly and disabled people that should be living in those places and the people that are able to work should get out and get a job and pay their own rent and power bill.

the moochers and thugs and lazy types will never move forward in their lives and get better jobs and desire a better place to live as long and the Mayor and the city of NY aides them in their ways.

fed up with u's guys!

too bad .i will always get sec8 and live in roosevelt landings . i get welfare also so i guess you are paying my rent . but i cannot afford to pay over 3,000 dollars per month for rent so i must stay on welfare and get sec8 . if i was to get a job do you think my job is going to pay me that much to afford to pay over 3000.00 , i dont think so . so now you know where i am coming from .i dont know how people can pay these high rents to live in roosevelt landings when 95 percent of the people here get sec8 to pay it for them .why would you be upset with me . when its the owner who is ripping off the goverment. having sec8 pay these rents , the place is a dump.only sec8 would pay these rents . and a few of you morons who make enough money to pay it

You will always leech from our pockets because you are too lazy to move up in this world. Why should you if you are spoon fed everything. You are nothing more than a burden to society. I doubt you ever worked a workday in your life. We can afford the rent because we worked hard to get what we earned. Nothing was just given to us. You leeches make me sick.

JR

YOU can make all the excuses you want and roll around in your self pity all day. You can go to school, yes the government will pay for you to do that and you can learn a skill, but first I guess you have to have the desire to, then and only then will you have a life and not an exisitance here on earth.

the fact that you are bragging about Sec 8 and Welfare shows your mentality. You are pityful and sad.

You should really try to start living a life and stop sucking life out of society. YOu do what everyone has done, you get a roomate, an apartment you can afford...you do not steal from the elderly and disabled.

You will have to atone for you actions to a highter power one day, if not to your own self today.

Have fun losing in life and what goes around does come around.

Good luck, you will need it

Signed,

Fed up wit all of yas!

In the above few posts, both jr and Anonymous have obliged each other with predictably hostile and bitter comments - probably to their unabashed delight - the kind of delight felines may feel in successfully hunting down rodents. A "conversation" such as the above leads to nothing - Anonymous resents having to be on a never-ending treadmill of work only to see much of his hard-earned money siphoned off in the form of taxes some of which go to fund Sec 8. JR is also fearful and bitter about the "gentrification" of RI and probably the rest of NY and lashes out accordingly. I suspect JR is boasting a bit as a way to assert dominance - in a weird way - over the newcomers who have jobs that pay enough for them to afford the market rate rents. He astutely notes that even if he did get a job, he could not afford the market rate rent on his apt - because the kind of job JR could obtain would obviously not be the kind of job Anonymous holds.

JR goes on to gloat about getting so much for "free" while the rest of us have to work for what we get, and on top of that, our labor partially supports his "leisure".

All this is nothing new - taxes pay for social programs in the US, ranging from the City & State services to Federal programs such as Sec 8. Hopefully these social programs will still be funded if and when working folks such as Anonymous may need them.

Let's remember though that programs such as Sec 8 subsidize not only people on fixed incomes or public assistance, but also many others who contribute much but may not be paid that often or that highly, such as those in the performing arts, writers, artists, dancers, poets, etc; these people may actually work at minimum-wage jobs while they "build their dream" - many of these people could easily be perceived as "yuppies" yet because of their low income they too are subsidized by Sec 8.

JR asks why should anybody pay a high rent here when they could pay the same rent and actually live in Mann. In fact, housing costs are coming down drastically in Manhattan and many people who have moved onto RI will take the earliest opportunity to move right back to the City. JR is absolutely right in this respect as well.

JR should not delude himself into thinking that working people of all income levels do not share at least one thing in common with JR: Rage at the shameless exploitation of landlords, especially given the considerable drawbacks of RI.

The take-away for both JR & Anonymous, and everyone else who is angry or fearful about living in overpriced "dumpy" apartments regardless of whether the rent is subsidized or not: Either way the rents being charged are way to high for the "product" being sold.

On the one hand the non-subsidized tenant is ripped off outright by the landlord, on the other the taxpayer is also ripped off by the landlord by subsidizing overpriced apartments no questions asked.

One way forward is for everybody to complain about the carte blanche that landlords seem to enjoy with the Sec 8 program. If landlords get these rich subsidies from taxpayer monies why should landlords decide what market rate is.

It's like Medicare - health care providers and hospitals don't get to decide the reimbursement rates, the Federal government decides. This same kind of oversight and control should be imposed on landlords accepting Sec 8 subsidies - no more free ride.

Let the government decide what is what isn't market rate rent for Sec 8 subsidized apartments since it has to pay the tab.

And if, as a result of the above oversight, these tax-payer funded blood-sucking landlords have to lower the rents of Sec 8 apartments, they will likewise have to lower the rents across the board, and in this way working people at last get the rent relief they so richly deserve!

Gregor,

Way too much thought in your post. A simple solution is to eliminate the FOREVER GIVEN section 8 and let it expire once convicted of a felony, caught working off the books and after 5 years. There should be simp,e motivation put in place to make the leeches look forward to prospiring in life.

People, lets focus here on PUBLIC TRANSIT -- this F train service interruption is just the beginning of pain and inconvenience for many Island bound commuters, and Mr. Martinez once again has failed to just state the facts - times, dates etc, -- of additional bus and tram service when the F train is not stopping at RI in either direction. This latest resumption of weekend and/or evening disruption requires better communication with riders, coordination with MTA regarding Q102 service, and perhaps, during the day & early on Saturdays when there is no F train - more red bus service.

Brain surgery this is not, Mr. Martinez and it does not require a to-be-hired transportation manager.

You and Ms. Torres should show residents, employees and visitors how to get it done.

When the 2nd Avenue Subway construction finally reaches 63rd Street -- that is when the proverbial dirt will hit the fan. Heaven only knows what we will have to deal with.

Long time resident.

Did RIOC ever announce the extended red bus and tram service for the past weekend? I happened to take the tram back to RI on Sunday evening around 7:22PM, and was pleasantly surprised to find that RIOC was running both cabins. However, no signs or web updates on the extended service were posted anywhere as far as I can tell.

I think the RIOC should give the tram and the red bus to the MTA. Maybe then people will realize that despite all the shortcomings the RIOC is showing we still have it extremely good!
