CITY DEMOLISHING GOLDWATER HOSPITAL FOR RESIDENTIAL?

The New York Sun published a story today that the city is planning on consolidating Goldwater and Coler hospital thereby reclaiming the 10 acre Goldwater site just south of the Roosevelt Island Tramway station for residential development. Of course, the local Roosevelt Island newspaper, The Main Street Wire had this story last week. Kudos to the staff at the Wire for being first with this major real estate development story.
According to residents. local politicians and RIOC officials, the inadequacy of Roosevelt Island's transportation infrastructure is a huge obstacle to residential development of this site. Congestion at the Roosevelt Island F train stop and the Tram during rush hours is terrible. Perhaps officials should revisit the idea of Roosevelt Island pedestrian access to the 59th street bridge via elevator, ramp and/or staircase as well as ferry service to Roosevelt Island.

Islander: Is this definite? The infrastructure is already overtaxed, the F-train during rush hour is a nightmare, the tram will be out of servie next year and no one ever knows when the red buses are going to show up. Not to mention the craptastic Gristedes and no decent take-out.

jmbo,
don't know yet how speculative proposed plan is. Will keep advised of future development.

Agree with you on problems with infrastructure and lack of quality services on Island. Purpose of this blog is to harness community involvement to improve quality of life on Roosevelt Island which, in my opinion has great potential.

Thanks for comments and participating in Roosevelt Island community dialogue. I hope you continue to contribute your thoughts and comments

Do you know if they have any plans for additional or substitute retail? With such great views and development all along the LIC waterfront, Bklyn, etc. you would think there would be plenty of interest. I'm surprised Related isn't all over it, unless they just care about their own section. Is there anything which can be done about that Gristedes?

Good luck with blog.

My husband and I are considering moving to Roosevelt Island with our two kids. We are a bit concerned about schooling there, particularly with the influx of so many more residential units, and the desire to attract families. Would you know where I can get information about existing schools (size, capacity, etc.)and whhat plans they may have to keep up with this growth? Thank you.

I am a 25 year resident of this special little Island. The newer resident must remember that we have gone through alot to be here.

WE must ALL act in unison on the infrastructure problems, the transportation problems- in particular the the horrible overcrowding on the F train in the morning, which will continue to get worse with additional buildings being built.

This WHOLE COMMUNITY should stand up and SAY NO MORE BUILDINGS!!!! We cannot handle what we now have.

The State has to be aware of this, DHCR, Governor Spitzer.

We were a PLANNED community, started back in 1977 for "AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR EVERYONE". Our Buildings, the "WIRE" Buildings were here when there was NO tram yet and then no subway until 1989.

I have lived in Westview for 25 years and alot of us here are in fear of losing our homes. We have enabled newer residents to come in, simply by paying our rent and using the merchants here, etc.

This Island, named after Franklin Delano Roosevelt MUST STAND TOGETHER AS A WHOLE OR IT WILL FOREVER BE TOTALLY DESTROYED.
