Assembly Member Kellner Congratulates Margie Smith and Michael Shinozaki, Winners of Resident Election for RIOC Board
Statement by Assembly Member Micah Z. Kellner

“For decades, residents of Roosevelt Island have expressed that the RIOC Board of Directors has not truly represented their interests. Taking matters into their own hands, on May 19, 2009, the Roosevelt Island Residents Association has, for the second time, held an island-wide referendum to recommend to the Governor and the Mayor the residents’ choices for filling two Board seats.

“I am proud that I was able to help partially pay for this referendum so that Islanders could express their democratic will, and I am thrilled to offer my congratulations to Margie Smith and Michael Shinozaki on winning Tuesday’s election. I have worked with both Margie and Michael for many years, and I know that they are the kind of people who will be passionate and responsive voices for all residents of the Island.”
According to RIOC President Steve Shane the next step for Ms. Smith and Mr. Shinozaki is:
Their CVs will be forwarded to the Appointments Office which will then begin the process of sending out the State forms, contacting the Mayor's office, ordering up the State Police investigation and finally, arranging the interview with the Commissioner (which might be earlier in the process) in preparation for the Governor's nomination and forwarding to Senate for confirmation.
Process is at the whim of the legislative calendar also.
