The 2/12-13 Roosevelt Island Daily Public Safety Report indicates:
Assault Disorderly Conduct/Criminal impersonation- Two subjects arrested by PSD.
Roosevelt Island Public Safety Director Keith Guerra adds:
There was a fight that occurred in front of the Card Shop, which filtered down to the Deli. Two adult males, who formerly resided on the island, were arrested for assaulting an adult male resident of the island. Both were processed at the 114th Pct. and sent through the system. Two Public Safety Officers sustained minor injuries breaking up the fight, due to a large crowd that formed as the fight was occurring. One of the males was also charged with Criminal Impersonation for not revealing his true identity because of a pending Warrant.

if it was just a fight why was there a bunch of bloody rags all over main street on saturday morning.

I heard a pso got slashed in the hand. Any truth to this?

Anonymous said...

Yeah, and that ain't right. These people are out here trying to protect us and they get injured trying to keep the peace.

thats the problem... never a full story. I seen the NYPD pull some kids out of an apartment and frisk them looking for a gun. Down playing the violence is only going to get someone hurt.

Also - the fight that took place was on Friday night - not Saturday. Is there a one-day delay in when things get on the blotter, or are there two separate incidents? There is no information provided yet for the Friday 7am - Sat. 7am time period yet. Between this event & the gun pulled in broad daylight on a Sunday afternoon, it seems like there might be some pretty serious stuff happening.

there are so many things going on that they keep in the shadow. FOR WHAT who are THEY PROTECTING. How about the older man (in his 60's) that got robbed on the 4th floor inside Roosevelt Landings... Come one.... why cant we get the real truth not the glazed over one

things on Roosevelt Island are going to change for the WORSE really really soon.... then what is going to happen. PSD is doing all that they can to control the happenings on the Island. But they can only do so much because obviously their hands are tied some where. Without proper knowledge how are we Island Residents going to know what to look out for... big trouble is coming and only certain people can see it... and that ALONE is a shame

There must be alot of frustration, boredom, and isolation among the youth. Why not have free evening basketball at the school gym, or study groups. There is no community or meeting room at the library that could be utilized for that purpose. There is no place to channel the excess energy. As for Eastwood itself, it is apparently the only complex with no gym.

Guns are needed for public safety. How Dan they protect us if they can't protect themselves? Guns in broad daylight? Nuts! PSD needs to be equipped like the NYPD.

Anonymous said...

I misspelled Dan, it was supposed to say CAN.

Jimmy from the city said...

I guess god forbid, but it might take one of us to get killed or a public safety officer for the guns to happen.

Too bad the island is getting so dangerous nowdays ....and many incidents are in the same place in front of public safety...there should be something really wrong with these guys...guns, drugs, etc....And for police dept is more important to fill up the report to show that they doing something....

Anonymous said...

Where is RIOC on this one? They need to either hire more of these guys or train them better. When it hits the fan they are going to run away like everyone else unable to do much. The nypd can only get here but so quickly. What do we do till then hide in trellis?

Anonymous said...

what we need is REAL NYPD POLICE! Public safety is not the best solution as we know. The are more worry about filling up the stupids reports

Anonymous said...

If nypd came they will quota the hell out of us with arrests and summonses. We have a solution... Give public safety guns. They are already law enforcement but without firearms. This is stupid! I don't need lazy nypd cops writing 30 summonses a month and making several arrests a month on crap! Psd is doing great just give them what we all need, protection.

What has been needed here for years is a substation of the 114th precinct. However, even with the increase in unlawful activity and quality of life offenses, neither Public Safety, nor RIOC nor our elected officials seem to be able to get NYPD to budge on this.

I neither love nor hate our public safety force. I do not think they need to be armed (yet) like they are at Starret City; but I think RIPSD, RIOC and DHCR need to make a stronger case for a greater police presence on the island.

AND in the case of some of our young people, their PARENTS need to teach them a little more impulse control and restraint when interacting with others.

I would like PSD to call NYP promptly when appropriate;
NOT carry arms themselves;and
spend more time patrolling on foot than in their cars.

Why not let them carry gun? How do you guts make any sense? Better equipment and training equals better self governed police force on the island. What's the difference between psd and nypd, other than one has guns and thebother doesn't? You guys are out of touch. I guess it will tak one of the officers or a resident to get KILLED before it reaches your ears. They are cops but with public safety due to what they do. They are first responders for this island! They been here for more than 20 years, so how is it to not give them guns yet? Wait another 20 years?

To all of you "nervous nellys" who don't think PSD needs the proper equipment (i.e. firearms), please understand that only those that qualify in their proper use will be allowed to carry them. Co-op City, Parkchester, Hunts Point and Seagate all have Officers who carry, and some who don't.

This discussion is a very sad reflection of American society.

Why do we lay like sheep and always opt for the hard way on doing things and waiting for a serious incident to occur prior making changes?

Weren't the officers sliced with a knife or blade and a second gun recovered within a week?

Anonymous said...

Public safety is doing police work with no guns! STUPID. You can't pay me enough to be in their shoes!

Guns in these guys hands is crazy and their is plenty to do if you are not slinging drums or playing gang. Gyms, pools and places are available for these people but they have choose a different life style, Parents need to parent and stop pretending nothing is going on.

Anonymous said...

Why is it crazy? It's practical. They are law enforcement, why have law enforcement without guns? Would you do it without a gun? How dense are you?

Anonymous said...

Why not for once try to fix the root cause and not just the symptoms? The need for guns is a symptom that can be dealt with through other means. Roosevelt Island is supposed to be a social experiment. Let's think big and start to try to solve problems instead of adding more to the mix.

Maybe Charlie Defino should start doing his job as the Youth Center Director and find some activities for these kids.

He was brought back for nothing. He does nothing and they should get someone else to run that place. Maybe then you'll see a change in behavior.

ROOSEVELT ISLANDER said...

What would you suggest the Youth Center Director do differently?

Below is a link to posts describing recent Youth Center activities involving weekend game nights, basketball program, SAT Instruction, Martial Arts Program, football and soccer.

Any suggestions you have would be welcomed.

The youth center can't help. These gangs are recruiting from within and they already got most of the kids in it. In turn now kids work for some uptown gang leaders. If you don't know how gangs operate, you will be very lost and will be in a bubble. The problem begins with bad parenting.

Public safety needs better protection, and thats for sure. They can't help the kids, us or themselves without protection. I know that I do not want my kids, family or myself to be a dead statistic.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, but the Youth Center is still a joke. Charlie wants a pat on the back for being open during a blizzard? Try staying open on the weekend.

I agree that they do nice stuff for the young kids. But, they do absolutely nothing for the 12-17 year olds that are terrorizing the island non-stop.

When the Diretor can address that issue, we will gladly leave your friend alone.

Somebody should take out a full page ad in the Wire (since the Wire refuses to write about it) publicizing the crime wave on RI, so prospective property buyers and renters could get some real information instead of the uniformly upbeat publicity peddled by the cynical Pollyannas in the management companies, RIOC, RIRA, etc.

I support the blog on 2/15 at 4.33pointing out that not all of PSD should be armed. But it appears from past history that many PSD employees treat themselves to privileges that do NOT apply to all at all times such as parking, jay walking, making u-turns, park-ing way off the curb, and biking on the sidewalks. How can we expect PSD officers to handle a gun properly if they cannot set a good example doing their basic duties?

Anonymous said...

So start with the supervisors at least!

Anonymous said...

The blog on 2/15. I am lost. I can't find what you are talking about. I guess we should take guns away from nypd as well, as I am sure they are not angles. Law enforcement are always allowed to bend the rules if it's law enforcement related. If they have to make a u turn to go after a vehicle in violation, they should do that. If they have to bike on the sidewalk to check if there are any kids hanging out in the breezeway, they should do that. I don't know, nor do you know why they are doing those evil infractions at the time you observe it. Can they just be doing it to do it? Yes. Can they actually have a necessity to doing it? Yes. I don't know, you don't know. Not taking any sides but it's s coin toss to know.

Anonymous said...

Nevermind, you meant post. Not an actual blog on the main page. I agree as well. Perhaps it should be phased in with supervisors first. Heck, I have seen both chiefs carry guns. It's just dumb for them to have them but not the actual men and women that interact criminals all day.

in response to the last comment. I too have seen the guns on the upper management. how come they carry guns and the patrol officers are the ones interacting with the public? is it because rioc wants these upper managements to carry a gun or is it because rioc does not know about it?

roosevelt islander - please ask why the upper management at public safety gets to carry a gun. it would be appreciated.
