Roosevelt Island Youth Proposes Time Capsule Monument Project To Capture Past, Present & Future Possibilities Of Roosevelt Island - You're Invited To Participate

Roosevelt Island resident Mark Shinozaki presented his idea of creating a Roosevelt Island Time Capsule to the Roosevelt Island Residents Association (RIRA) October 4 Common Council during it's Public Session. Mr. Shinozaki was assisted in the presentation by RIRA's Children, Youth and Education (CY&E) Committee Chair Adib Mansour.

Here's the Roosevelt Island Time Capsule Presentation to RIRA Common Council.

Mr. Mansour adds:

Roosevelt Island Community-Wide TIME CAPSULE PROJECT

The RIRA CY&E Committee is thrilled to support a fantastic Time Capsule project initiated by Mark Shinozaki to capture the past, present, and endless future possibilities of Roosevelt Island.

The CY&E Committee will work with Mark to make it a leadership project with students from diversified backgrounds. The process will include:
  • taking snapshots of various locations on the island,
  • collecting historic images,
  • interviewing a multitude of people (including doctors, vendors, teachers & principals, RIOC president, RIRA members, hospital workers/patients, Tram managers/operators, seniors, parents, and children)
to name a few.

We intend to include all aspects of the island. We will also create a series of competitions for the Elementary school students to draw a futuristic map of Roosevelt Island as they see it in the future, essays on future technologies and how it would help the island residents by young teens, and ideal future as seen by teens and young adults.

All of the images, interviews and artifacts collected will be stored in the Roosevelt Island Time Capsule and would be opened in 25 years, replenished and re-opened in the next 25 years after.

Mark Shinozaki will be working with Gallery RIVAA to visualize a futuristic look for the Roosevelt Island Time Capsule, as well as the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) to chose an appropriate location for it.

Following our recent conversation with RIOC President Susan Rothenthal and Gallery Rivaa’s architect and artist Tad Sudol, we envision the the Roosevelt Island Time Capsule being part of a monument. We intend the Roosevelt Island Time Capsule Monument to be futuristic and artistic, encompassing the past, present and future of Roosevelt Island. It will be self standing, very noticeable and able to withstand the weather elements for 50 years.

We are currently looking for a team of Middle and High School students to take charge of collecting photographs, conducting interviews, administer competitions, and keep updates. The team will meet with RIRA’s CY&E Committee once a week to show updates and discuss next steps.

A preliminary list of people & organizations to be included in the Time Capsule project are: RIOC, RIRA, PSD, Gallery RIVAA, Cornell, Historical Society, Schools, Hospitals, doctors, dentists, Stores / Restaurants, Youth Organizations, Seniors Organizations, Handicapped Organizations, Buildings, Religious establishments, Transportation: Tram, Ferry, and Subway, Newspapers and Blogs, Workforce, Roosevelt Island original residents, Wildlife Freedom Foundation, our Politicians, Parks, among others.

Please email Adib Mansour with your full name, date of birth, and contact information (email and cell phone) as well as building you live in, as soon as possible riradib@earthlink.net .

This is an important leadership project which will result in community service as well as possible classroom credit (we might be able to negotiate with your school).
