Man In Wheelchair Run Over By Access A Ride Van On Roosevelt Island's Main Street - NYPD ESU Free Him From Underneath Van - Expected To Recover

There was a bad accident on Roosevelt Island earlier this morning. A reader sent me the following message:
U see this on Main Street. Guy in a wheelchair got run over

Another reader, Olya, was there on the scene and had this eyewitness report:
I was sitting on the benches between Starbucks and Duane Reade with a friend - and as I looked towards the Queens side of the Island - I heard a man screaming and in a split second an Access Van that frequent the island had run over a man in a wheelchair. My body and mind were in complete shock - but as I ran towards the scene I called 911. The man was alive, thank goodness and screaming - "Please lift it, my back my back". In the meantime, 911 was dispatching an ambulance, but was completely unsure as to where Main Street on Roosevelt Island was located. After giving an address of 455 Main Street, the operator assured me that they were on the way. FDNY was first on the scene and moved quickly and efficiently to free the man from under the van. And, he was then whisked into the FDNY ambulance. I am wishing all the people involved in this incident well - it was truly traumatic.

I inquired of Roosevelt Island Public Safety Department Keith Guerra:
I understand that a man in a wheelchair got hit by a vehicle near 425 Main Street earlier this morning.

Can you provide any additional details as to what happened, the cause, type of vehicle, extent of any injuries etc.

Mr. Guerra replied:
On Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at approximately 9:41 AM, a 61 year-old Male Goldwater Wheelchair Out-Patient was struck by an Access-A-Ride Mini-Bus. The accident occurred between 425 and 455 Main St. The victim and his wheelchair were wedged under the front wheel axle of the Mini-Bus. Members from PSD, FDNY and NYPD responded to the scene. The victim was extricated by the NYPD Emergency Service Unit and transported in an FDNY EMS Ambulance to the Cornell University Medical Center in Manhattan. He is awaiting surgery and is expected to recover from his injuries.

I have been on the Island over 12 years. I have seen just as many people hit by cars (4 in cross walks) - mostly on the -New- Main Street Drag just past the bend. I continuously see PS officers blindly writing parking tickets while cars wiz by and through the stop signs (without even "feather stopping"). While driving, I have been honked at for properly stopping at stop signs, aggressively tailgated and triple passed (one car is actually passing the car that is passing me -ha!). I once gave our famed Mayor Dinkins the finger for running a stop sign - he stopped, backed up and apologized (btw- Sunday's 8-9am on his way to tennis).

We have posted speed limits of 15mph and stop signs apprx every 30 feet - how is it even possible to have cars hitting people -at that speed- unless the traffic laws are not enforced properly??? Just wait until one hits a kid.

The PSD act as specialists. If/when they are looking for parking violators, free running dogs, talking to a colleague or
jaywalking across Main Street, they react to nothing else at that time.

I guess we are under the impression that the PSD Officers should be everywhere. Maybe they should be doing this? Or maybe they should be doing that? All I know is that when I needed them 2 years ago, they came to my aid instantly. I would not have made it if it were not for their speedy response. Cut them a break, they can only do so much with 30 sum-odd Officers. People get hit by cars all over NYC and the NYPD has over 30,000 Officers.

Some of you people really need to think before you post anything. Why don't we just hire another 1000 PSD officers, this way they can cover every foot of RI!!! Rather then appreciate the fact that RI has our own PSD the same people moan over and over again when anything goes wrong that has nothing to do with PSD. The attitude is truly mind boggling.

Found this on www.urbandictionary.com and I think this sums it up. Glad I do not live there anymore.

Definition -

Roosevelt Island Resident (n) -

(1) a stuck up wanna be NYC'r who is too afraid to live in the real NYC so uses the island as a security blanket.

(2) complains about 99% of every issue and if needed makes up an issue to cause more issues.

(3) thinks because they lived on the island for "x" amount of years they have a say on how things go

example:

Well, I have been a Roosevelt Island Resident for 35 years! What do you mean I can't park backwards on the sidewalk with my doors open!?

I agree with the original poster ... How is it possible to get hit with a car on RI w/posted speed limits of only 15mph and very frequent stop signs. Are we supposed to just deal w/the fact that people get hit with cars all the time - as another poster wrote ... or are we just to "stuck up - wanna be NYC'r" and maybe we shouldnt "complain" and try to fix the problem as another poster wrote??????

Speeding cars and cars making U-turns are more likely to be caught by PSD officers on foot than PSD officers driving around. BUT the PSD officers seem to do most of their street work from their cars while driving.

Excerpt from the PSD's blog Sept 8

"Taxi fare over charge- A resident reported he took a sedan from the airport and was charged an excessively high fare. But he made the payment and the sedan left. PSD responded and conducted a search with negative results. "

What did PSD search for ? The sedan that left ?
