Roosevelt island Public Safety Department Outdoor Booth Installed Near Subway Station

I noticed this Public Safety Booth installed near the Roosevelt Island subway station today. I asked the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) VP of Operations Fernando Martinez and Public Safety Department Chief Keith Guerra:
I noticed what appears to be a Public Safety booth placed at the subway entrance.

Any comment as to what this is for, it's purpose, is it temporary or permanent etc?
Will update when a response is received.

Get rid of this!  The Roosevelt Island Keystone Kops just want to create the idea that this is a crime-ridden place where their bloated numbers are needed.  Read the reports.   The Main Street office is already too big, too bright and too prominent.   Contrary to the impression they make, this is one of the very safest neighborhoods in a safe city.   RIOC -- it's enough!

I'd be interested to hear the reason for this booth.  It is one of the busiest areas on RI, and perhaps round-the-clock monitoring would be a good idea.  I'm wondering if there have been complaints from Hudson about folks sitting out by the subway station.   But is there a rule against sitting on those benches?  I thought the benches in Riverwalk Commons and by the train station were absolutely public - not a private park.  So is there a problem with people sitting on those benches?  Is that why the PSD booth is there - to intimidate people sitting on those benches and in effect make the area less comfortable to relax in?  Just wondering...

SML, you are absolutely right about this being one of the safest neighborhoods in the City.  But, how dod you think it got that way?  Public Safety does a great job detering crime and I would imagine that there is a good reason for this booth.

I'm not a Law Enforcement expert - but I'm sure you, Good Kitty and Jay Minute aren't either.  Personally, I'm glad it's there.  I even heard the Token Booth Clerk telling my neighbor that she was happy it was put there, and that has to count for something.

SML has been a constant complainer on this blog.  Complain about this and complain about that.  Good Kitty has been ok, but I'm almost positve the booth has nothing to do with the benches.  Read the daily blotter as posted up by the owner of this blog.  There have been crimes committed in and just outside the Train station.  Don't you guys remember the cell phones that were being taken?  Wasn't there a school kid who had his coat stolen from there?  Come on people..... I'm sure the PSD has good reason to place a booth there and, I for one, am glad since I take the train late at night.

I was told by RIOC VP Of Operations Martinez that the Public Safety Booth was placed in front of the subway entrance in error and that it will be removed and placed on the other side of the street near the ventilation shaft and pathway to promenade.

The island has been safe from the outset, long before the current public safety regime was here and well before they took up the largest storefront on Main St.  It is much bigger in staff and physical size than is necessary for the work they do.  It conveys the wrong impression, which, I say, is exactly what they want to do to justify their existence.

Roozevelt, I am not a professional islander, so I don't have to sing  its praises all the time.  This is a good place to bring all sorts of issues to the attention of others, and I use it that way, as do others.  I've lived here for 35 years and have seen many changes, most for the worse.  You don't need me to tell you that there are cherry trees and outdoor movies.

Zoilita, I wish I could agree with you, but I really don't think they know what they are doing.  For example, my husband once pointed out to one of the officers that a car was making an illegal u-turn.  Instead of confronting the driver, she handcuffed my husband and wrote out a ticket for disorderly conduct!

other gang members come over on the train to confront the gang here...that is like the border to mexico I think...I hope all the security cameras go up soon, I feel they will help show the message that we on RI are not fools and will not put up with Gangland mentality and we should really crack down hard on these kids with too much time on their hands and punish them to the max for their horrible ways and hurting people.

What an epic failure. How is it possible that nobody noticed a crew cutting through the pavers, running underground electrical connections, and installing a giant police booth until all of that work was done? It took place over at least 2 days. Pathetic.

Hey genius, no one points out a u turn and then themselves get handcuffed for disorderly conduct. Get your head out of your butox and come to realization that your husband was probably acting in a savage like manor to get the summons. I wasn't there but anyone with a brain can come to realization that your husband was more than likely the problem I that situation.

How about you go do that job instead of putting other professions down? Oh you probably won't pass the background check to begin with.

Go away fool.

RIOC Public Safety Director Guerra informs me that the Booth was not placed in front of the subway station in error but is intentionally there on a temporary basis until it can be moved across the street following the completion of construction work by the MTA and subsequent sidewalk work by RIOC.

I guess that will teach him to not tell an officer how to do his job. lol

Er, I was there.  I'm not putting down any profession, just pointing out unprofessional conduct.    The officer was embarrassed that a bystander pointed out that illegal activity that she had missed and turned on the person who reported it.

I can assure you that I would be able to pass any background test anyone would administer.

So much for "If you see something, say something."  :-)

I'm sure there's more to that story.  Nobody gets handcuffed and arrested for pointing out a Traffic Violation.

Idiotsmakememad said...

Er, i highly doubt that happened as you say.

I am pretty sure it went like this " look at ya stupid mf'rs, cant do ya jobs, i pay fo yo paycheck. Wat ya gona do bout tha u turn. Ya mf'rs are useless.(crowd forms to see commotion)

Ya mother frs love mess wit my kids and the lovely yute on the island, do ya motha fn job"
Cut to scene where he gets arrested and you actibg like the victim.

I seen it before, i wouldnt be surprised if it was you guys.

I say good for the officer doing his job by cleaning up trash like you and your husband.

Where are your kids? Oh probably smoking the ganja in a stairwell. Oh dear, my little johnny would never be a gangbanger!

Apple never falls far from the tree.

Oh, you've got the situation and my family so wrong it's laughable! I'm done on this thread, but in the future, you might consider disagreeing without resorting to ad hominen argument, especially when you don't even know the people you are arguing with.

Noone gets arrested for absolutetly nothing. Dont be so nieve.

maybe the island should focus on activities for the kids on the island instead of treating them like criminals...

Maybe the parents should keep a better eye on their "children" instead of letting them roam around like a pack of wolves ready to pounce on an unsuspecting victim walking home.

Theres only so much a government organization can do to take care of other peoples children.

Why Lie? said...

A neighbor stood outside the Duane Reade yesterday. We spoke and I learned that a customer accused of shoplifting and a Duane Reade employee were in an argument or physical fight, with the employee yelling for help, even naming the manager. No one helped her. Finally, the neighbor phoned Public Safety and they said they would send an officer over. After no one showed up for a few minutes, the neighbor phoned Public Safety again. Here's the response: "We sent someone there already and they did not see anything." The neighbor said, "I have been outside the Duane Reade the whole time and no one came."

Within a few more minutes, Public Safety showed up. The customer accused of shoplifting and the employee spoke to Public Safety.

I left without learning the resolution. But the question is, How could the person answering the phone at Public Safety lie and say that an officer was sent and had left the scene when no such thing happened?

MaybeItsNotALie said...

Perhaps, just going out on a limb here, perhaps they gave the wrong address or the store.

Maybe they say gristedes instead os Duane reade. Maybe they said a different address?

You and I don't truly know. It's all speculation and heresay.

The old game of telephone is at it again.

I think it has to do with the gang roaming through from Main st to the train and vise versa.

If you take the train at night, especially weekends, you see them hanging out and meeting up around there.

Kudos for psd for being proactive instead of reactive.

I am the person who called RIPSD twice to report the incident at Duane Reade, and I arrived well after the incident had started. It was clear something was terribly wrong btw the employee and alleged perp, and it was clear that RIPSD did not send anyone till my second call, 4 minutes after the first one.
I have lived here more than 25 years, and this is not the first time the PSD has been slow on a response...but it IS pretty terrible to learn that the 3 pm to 11 pm shift has as few as 7 people on duty ... Not really the size force we need later in the day when most incidents ... Mild or serious occur.
