Roosevelt Island is fortunate to have many talented musicians as residents and a community which appreciates and treasures them. Roosevelt Islander Ben Rosenblum is an award winning jazz pianist and accordionist. He is an artist on the One Trick Dog Records label with his six piece ensemble Nebula Project.
Here's a compilation of 2024 live performances of Ben Rosenblum Nebula Project featuring Ben Rosenblum (piano, accordion, composition), Wayne Tucker (trumpet), Jasper Dutz (sax, flute, clarinets), Rafael Rosa (guitar), Marty Jaffe (bass), Ben Zweig (drums, percussion), special guest Xavier Del Castillo (tenor sax).
Enjoy.

Happy Holidays and Best Wishes for the New Year from One Trick Dog Records.
A group supporting priority Roosevelt Island Tram boarding for residents and workers gathered in the cold last night at Good Shepherd Plaza prior to the December 19 Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) Board of Directors Meeting being held inside the much warmer Good Shepherd Church. The Group chanted:
What Do We Want, Priority Boarding, When Do We Want It, Now
and prepared to give their reasons to the RIOC Board Members during the Public Session held prior to the start of the Directors Meeting.
Will have full video of the RIOC Board Public Session testimonies supporting Roosevelt Island Tram boarding preference for residents/workers as well as reaction from RIOC Board members in a few days.
Today, Roosevelt Island's NY State Assembly Member Rebecca Seawright issued a statement addressed to Paul Krikler, one of the Tram Boarding Preference organizers, supporting the efforts of the group.
According to Ms Seawright:
Dear Mr. Krikler
Thank you for contacting my office regarding overcrowding on the Roosevelt Island Tram. I strongly favor RIOC adopting an action plan that prioritizes access to residents of Roosevelt Island.
The Tram is essential to the transportation of needs of the community. There are numerous categories of people who rely on the Tram, including those with disabilities, senior citizens, workers in all fields, parents and school-age children. Whether it is used for transportation to a medical appointment or a place of business, the Tram is a vital mode of transportation.
While we welcome visitors to enjoy the vibrant life and attractions of Roosevelt Island, a plan is needed that will result in a reduction of wait time and an improved schedule that recognizes resident's usage.
In the past, we have successfully advocated for ways to address transportation issues, including the expansion of RIOC's Red Bus service to ameliorate sharp service reductions. Similarly, we fought hard to ensure an F train shuttle during the Direct Track Fixation repairs last year.
Now is the time for RIOC to step up and present an action plan that fully prioritizes resident use of the Tram.
I have sent a copy of my comments to the RIOC leadership as well.
Thank you for contacting me on this important matter.
In response to my request for comment on the issue, Roosevelt Island NYC Council Member Julie Menin replied:
As a supporter of Roosevelt Island residents and commuters, I value the importance of ensuring their needs are considered regarding tramway access. The Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation should ask for further clarification of existing New York State Transportation laws to determine the feasibility of prioritizing access to existing public transit.

Island Om’s mission
is to create an oasis of wellness away from your everyday hectic life, a place
to find your OM. Wellness is as necessary as water or air — without it, we
burn out and we weaken our immune systems. In life there needs to be a balance
to find that centered wellness: Yin and Yang, Shiva and Shakti, Fire and
Water. Island Om taps into not only the natural elements that surround us, but
the truism that One can not exist without the Other — and we follow this
philosophy to help all of our students find their Om.
ABOUT
Island Om is the
first Wellness Studio opening on Roosevelt Island, in the heart of Main
Street! Nestled between two major islands and only one subway/tram/ferry
ride away from Manhattan/LIC/Astoria, Island Om is here to motivate,
inspire, uplift and empower our students. Our founder, Jax Schott, has
taught for all demographics in the wellness world and is excited to bring
wellness classes to Roosevelt Island as diverse as the community. We welcome
ALL students to become part of our Roosevelt Island Family.
CLASSES
Island Om offers
the fierceness and high energy of the Barre and Sculpt workouts with the
softer, more fluid, yet grounding energy of the Yoga Room. In between those
energies are classes and workshops that support an individual’s needs
throughout one’s life: Meditation, Childbirth Education, Therapeutic
services, Nutrition, Creative Workshops, Family classes and Events.
Island Om’s
teaching approach is to connect with our students so that we can meet their
specific needs within a group class. Our instructors pay specific attention
to alignment so that you will be able to grow and flourish in your own
personal practice. You will have the opportunity to take classes not just
from different teachers, but from teachers with different styles and
backgrounds. All of our classes are meant to support and inspire in a
non-competitive way — and it’s amazing to see the connections made among our
regular students! Not only will you find your OM, but you will feel at hOMe
once you arrive.
I spoke with the FDNY Chief at the scene of the Roosevelt Island subway station incident. According to the Chief:
... approximately 15:53 hours
today, we had a person struck by a Queens
bound train heading towards Queens Plaza.
The train rolled over the patient by
about two cars. Patient was quickly
removed by FD units to waiting EMS
bus and is now being transported to a local
hospital in Manhattan.
PD is investigating the
circumstances as to what happened.... injuries are serious at this moment...
The Chief added that the FDNY responded in it normal response time:
Being Roosevelt Island it's a little bit longer because of the greater distance from Queens.
According to a NYPD spokesperson:
A male in his 50's was struck by a Queens bound train and taken to hospital in stable condition. At this time, no criminality is suspected. The incident is still being investigated.
Subway service was disrupted and riders had to use the Q102 bus
Good evening. There are still delays/longer waits for F trains after someone was struck by a train at Roosevelt Island, F trains were rerouted in both directions. We do apologize for a long wait. ^JP

The lack of public bathrooms on Roosevelt Island has been a problem for many years. As reported in 2007:
... Good Day: I was visiting Roosevelt Island yesterday.
I basically had a nice time, residents were very
friendly, but I was unable to find any public
restrooms....
Roosevelt Island Historical Society (RIHS) President Judy Berdy is concerned about the lack of public bathrooms on Roosevelt Island. Ms Berdy shares this message she sent last Saturday to the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) leadership team of Chief Financial Officer Dhru Amin and Acting Chief Operating Officer Mary Cunneen upon learning that the Cornell Tech Cafe is closing during the upcoming holidays from December 21 to January 5 making its public bathroom unavailable. According to Ms Berdy.
Every day dozens of visitors and residents arrive at the kiosk in need of bathroom facilities.
As you can see from the message below there will be an urgent bathroom shortage starting next week.
In the past Cornell Tech has accommodated visitors in the bathrooms at Bloomberg Cafe.
We have referred people to Southpoint Park which is really difficult if they are not on their way to Southpoint Park.
We know that the sewer work has been done and assume that the two bathrooms in the station should be in operation.
We Know it is a challenge to have visitors use the station bathroom., but the only other solution is opening the two
bathrooms in Sportspark for visitors. Use of these bathrooms will not interupt the function of Sportspark, a RIOC facility, not a private club.
RIOC has never been good at accommodating the toilet needs of visitors or residents.
The use of portable facilities in mid-winter is unreasonable and unsafe.
Please send us your solution Monday or Tuesday since Cornell Cafe will be closed starting Wednesday.
The Roosevelt Island Tram bathrooms were closed today.
The Southpoint Park bathrooms were open and in use today,
a short 5-10 minute walk from the Tram.
RIOC Communications Director Bryant Daniels replied to Ms Berdy that bathrooms in the Sportspark will be available to the public.
According to Mr Bryant:
The westside Sportspark bathrooms near the main entrance are open for the general public to use while the Tram station bathrooms are offline. Judy you and your team can let folks know as needed, there is now no sign on the door about no public bathrooms.
Signage will be necessary to make sure that people know the Sportspark bathrooms are available for the public to use.
On Tuesday, December 17th from 6-7 PM in the Good Shepherd Community Center, RIOC and the Roosevelt Island Residents Association (RIRA) will present a special "Holiday Fire Safety Preparedness Seminar" which will cover preparedness, prevention, and response for fires inside the home. Attendees of the seminar will receive a free "Fire Safety Bedside Bag," which will include small items that can help you in the event of a fire in the home.*
Said RIRA President Frank Farance, "This is the busiest time of year for home fires. POP QUIZ: A dried out Christmas Tree will become engulfed in flames in about:
(A) 2-3 seconds;
(B) 30 seconds;
(C) 2-3 minutes.
"The answer is (A) - now count One-Mississippi, Two-Mississippi, and it's that quick. Also, what happens when an emergency - fire, flood, tornado, earthquake, power failure, etc. occurs in the middle of the night when you're sleeping? We have an answer for that, and each of you will get a free Bedside Bag, including whistle and flashlight. This will complement your Go Bag and your Stay Box - and you'll learn more about making it easier to respond to these emergencies.
"This is a family friendly presentation, so children and youth are welcome. Encourage your teens to attend as they can be the biggest helpers for family safety. The presentation will leave enough time for Questions and Answers. Looking forward to a happy, healthy, and SAFE holiday season."
We hope to see you next Tuesday (12/17) at 6pm in Good Shepherd Chapel!

In June 2022 Ms Short told me
about the NY Junior Tennis & Learning program on Roosevelt Island that she
runs and is a big part of her Sunday activities.
Ms Short is the President of the Roosevelt Landings Tenants Association and
reported last August about electricity
submetering issues in the building.
This fills a longstanding need, and thanks to all the leaders who pulled it together. For balance now, we need resident leadership to come up with something similar. RIRA is a wreck waiting for...
Jesus Christ. Give it up. The priority boarding is not going to happen. If the line is too long, take the subway. It's not that far from the tram station on either end of the trip.
The protections from Public Safety for tram safety diminish the man hours of protection that Roosevelt Islanders pay for to protect us right here in our community. While It's necessary,...
It good idea but need to think about a limit number of passes per person or some other control to stop people trying to grab multiples for sale. Also have to think where/when do you get the daily...
There is no extra fee for the annual Fast Line Pass. The idea is the same thing as what your are calling Priority Boarding. The idea that is different is that anyone (residents/workers/visitors)...
