Another Day Of Long Lines Full Of Sightseeing Tourists On Roosevelt Island Tram Making Life Miserable For Residents And Workers

A Tipster shares photo taken this afternoon of the crazy Roosevelt Island Tram line stretching from the platform, down the stairs, across Second Avenue Tram Plaza

and reports
I feel terrible for RI residents. It must be frustrating. I get upset when I’m rushing home, and I miss my train, and the next one is coming in a few minutes. I can’t even imagine waiting to get home in that line!

Long lines of sightseeing tourists have made life miserable for Roosevelt Island residents and workers getting to and from Roosevelt Island.

Here's what the Roosevelt Island Tram lines full of sightseeing tourists

were like the past three days.

2321 people have signed the Trampled By Tourists, Priority Boarding for Residents and Workers on the Roosevelt Island Tram petition.

A group of Roosevelt Island residents spoke during the December 19 Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) Board of Directors meeting Public Session advocating for residents/workers boarding preference on the Roosevelt Island Tram

Elected representatives including Mayor Adams, Assembly Member Rebecca Seawright and City Council Member Julie Menin have expressed support for some type of preference for residents and workers on the Roosevelt Island Tram.

Here's more info on the issue.

UPDATE 12/27 - Roosevelt Island Tram lines today.

According to a Tipster when the Tram doors opened:

... there was a small stampede, and a woman screamed. I’ve never seen it this bad in my life. When the doors of the Tram opened, it was like a buffalo stampede

Another resident reports:

I was passing by the Tram line on the way to the train because the line was too long, and someone in line literally said thay should sell FastTrack tickets online for the Tram like they do at Disney.

Update From NYPD And RIOC PSD Chief On What Happened To Man Hit By F Train At The Roosevelt Island Subway Station Last Week

As previously reported, last Wednesday, December 18, a man was hit by an oncoming F Train on the Queens bound track of the Roosevelt Island subway station. According to the FDNY Chief at the scene:

... approximately 15:53 hours today, we had a person struck by a Queens bound train heading towards Queens Plaza.

The train rolled over the patient by about two cars. Patient was quickly removed by FD units to waiting EMS bus and is now being transported to a local hospital in Manhattan.

PD is investigating the circumstances as to what happened.... injuries are serious at this moment...

During the December 19 Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) Board of Directors meeting, RIOC Public Safety Department Chief Kevin Brown reported that the man accidentally slipped on the platform falling to the tracks and went underneath the train. He suffered a severed leg when hit by the oncoming F train. The man was not a Roosevelt Island resident according to the Chief.

Chief Brown added that the people on the platform who witnessed the incident were affected by the incident.

I asked the NYPD today:

I am following up on the December 18 incident at the Roosevelt Island Subway Station where a man was struck by the F Train on the Queens bound platform. At the time, the DCPI said no criminality was suspected and that incident is still being investigated.

Is there any update on the investigation regarding what happened and the injuries sustained by the victim? I'm told the man slipped as the train was coming into the station and that his leg was severed. Is that true?

Do you have any more information about the incident?

A NYPD spokesperson replied:

On Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at approximately 1550 hours, police responded to a 911 call for an aided individual at the Roosevelt Island subway station on the F line, within the confines of the 114 Precinct/Transit District 20. Upon arrival, officers observed a 45-year-old male on the roadbed with injuries indicative of falling from an elevated position. EMS responded and transported the individual to Bellevue in stable condition. No criminality is suspected at this time.

Happy Holidays To The Roosevelt Island Community From Your Neighbors At Four Freedoms Park Conservancy.

Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms State Park is the first memorial dedicated to the former President in his home state of New York. Located on the southern tip of Roosevelt Island in New York City, it is the last work of the late Louis I. Kahn, an iconic architect of the 20th century. The Park celebrates the Four Freedoms, as pronounced in President Roosevelt's famous January 6, 1941 State of the Union speech: freedom of speech & expression, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear.

The PBS Channel 13 Treasures of New York program profiled the FDR Four Freedoms Park in this video.

Early Morning Fire Today At Roosevelt Landings On Roosevelt Island - 78 FDNY And EMS Personnel On Scene, Cause Under Investigation By FDNY Fire Marshals

Roosevelt Island Tipsters share videos and report a fire earlier this morning at the Roosevelt Landing apartment building.

I asked the FDNY:

There was a fire this morning 12/22, about 7 am at 510-540 Main Street on Roosevelt Island.

Do you have any info on what happened? Were there any injuries or damage?

A FDNY spokesperson answered:

510 Main Street South of Roosevelt Island Tram

Call received @ 0627 hrs.

Report of a fire in a multiple dwelling

Fire on the 7th floor of a 100’ x 300’ – 19 story building 20 units

78 Fire and EMS Personnel on scene

1 Firefighter transported to a local area hospital

Fire under control @ 0717 hrs.

Fire cause under investigation by FDNY Fire Marshals

View of the apartment window after fire put out by FDNY.

Though not confirmed as the cause of fire, concerns were raised by some Roosevelt Landings residents that space heaters used by many in the building to keep warm could be the cause of the fire.

UPDATE 8:30 PM - Among the comments on Roosevelt Islander Instagram post:

  • This is the 2nd fire in a week, my theory is the point of ignition is one of the building installed electric radiators (not a space heater as mentioned on the blog). The building heaters get hot enough to melt electrical cables, and the fire this morning appeared to be located right beneath the a/c unit in the window, where the building installed electric radiator is located. Just a theory, and thought.
  • I heard this was the exact cause
  • I can confirm that the radiators get very hot and I’m worried about the cables overheating/melting too. I moved some of my cables around last night exactly because of that,...
  • this is exactly why I turn my heat off when I leave the apartment and when I sleep at night (sleep with lots of extra blankets and warm clothes)- don’t want to risk it because I know the heaters spark and melt wires.
