Good Roosevelt Island news to begin the year 2013.
Roosevelt Island Historical Society (RIHS) President Judy Berdy reports today:
The scaffolding is coming down this weekThe RIHS has more on the Good Shepherd Chapel here and information on the decision by Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) to restore the Good Chapel roof to its original condition with slate rather than another, less expensive, material is here.

The windows at the base of the building in the Oval Room have been removed for restoration. In spring the brickwork will be repointed.

According to RIOC's 2012-13 (Page 5) Approved Budget, the approximate total cost of the Good Shepherd Chapel Roof Restoration project was $800 thousand.

It's called oxidation and it happens because the copper is exposed to oxygen. The salt water helps produce the verdigris (green coating). I think we did this experiment in 10th grade chemistry, right?

That's why Frank is so popular.. he could give a straightforward answer/explanation but can't lay off with smart-alecky ones. It turns out the reason copper is used for leaders/gutters is that the weathering/patina/verdrigis "...actually protects the copper below the surface from further corrosion, making it a good water-proofing material for roofs (which is why the roofs of so many old buildings are bright green)."
Jesse Webster, your comment serves the purpose of making a snide remark (snark) toward someone else (me), who was merely providing informative about copper. In other words your comment was directed at yourself, right?
Now it's possible that you're actually upset at CheshireKitty and that got redirected to me. CK said: "BTW - anybody know if the copper leaders/gutters are going to weather into green?". So you might be upset at CK, with her mountains of text that she writes (little with confirming research) and her elite academic education, that she did not expend the 15 seconds to ask Google "why does copper turn green?" (which produces 2.6 million responses, including a nice patina chart over time, see "http://www.crescentcitycopper.com/why-does-copper-turn-green.htm").
I can see why you might be unhappy with her response, too: her thinking is still muddled and confused.
In summary, if CK is going to boast about her elite academic education, then I have the expectation that she's going to make use of it.
CK, now explain to us Why, with your elite academic education, you couldn't have spent 15 seconds to ask Google that question yourself? Maybe that's why my response might seem smart-alecky because you were so obviously lazy or lacking discipline. So you want to write really long responses on this blog, yet you don't give us the courtesy to researching what you write so that we give you the courtesy of reading your writings (which you expect from us).
Besides, your thinking is still confused. There are other metals that are used, too. For example, aluminum has similar qualities (an oxidation layer seals the exposed areas), and ditto for several kinds of bronze and brass. You'll find lots of aluminum work on roofs.
Your original question: Will the copper turn green? My answer: yes, it's called oxidation.
Which metals oxidize without structural affects? Aluminum, copper, some bronze and brass. (e.g., not untreated iron/steel). Thus, cooper is *NOT* the only choice. So you can't say "the reason copper is used for leaders/gutters is that the weathering actually protects the copper below the surface from further corrosion, making it a good water-proofing material for roofs" because other materials work just as well.
As for water-proofing copper isn't that great because it is stiff, compared to the wood structure holding it up. It's the *underlying* water-proofing (underlay) that keeps the inside of the church free from water, as was demonstrated many rains during the roof's reconstruction (without the copper or the slate shingles).
Copper is used because it is attractive, but it is also expensive, which is why aluminum and plastic are more prevalent in houses (just take a drive to observe). I'm guessing that because the church is a landmarked building, an architect made suggestions about the kinds of materials that are appropriate for this kind of building and copper was chosen, which is very attractive. (And the slate looks great, too.)
I strongly suspect that the Landmarks Commission had something to say about it.
Of course, that was implied with my noting it was a landmarked building and an architect was making suggestions.
Nope, Frank - Jesse's comment was directed to you, as consistently purveying snark. Jesse said nothing about my innocent question about the copper material. The Statue of Liberty has weathered to green - nobody's complaining about it!
OK, thinking about this some more - the $800k/$800,000 *must* be a typo - no way redoing that roof (even in real slate, which was the correct call) costs anywhere near a million dollars.
