People here sometimes act like they live in some small town Nowhere, USA. I remember four events that drew just as much excitement: the purchase of new red buses which were than paraded around on Main Street and the openings of Starbucks, Duane Reade, and especially Nonno's. Sometimes I have to look out of the window to be reminded that we are actually smack in the middle of New York City.
I thought the MTA already said that the Hillary Campaign did not reach out to them.
I don't see how attendees can be expected to stand for several hours in the sun. Even the non-disabled may have a hard time after an hour or so. A diabetic person may need to have food available to avoid low blood sugar/possible hypoglycemic convulsions/coma.
I find it very very disappointing that Ben Kallos thinks that an over priced solar roof for such a small building is and should be a priority for him to secure for an island with ver 14,000.00 people living. We have no Police Dept present, * we have a security company called PSD* also there is not now or never been since I have lived here a evacuation drill at ALL! If the subway or tram or MTA close down because of an attack or security threat, what would 14,000 people plus a few extra thousand on the weekends do? He has no concern about that because he lives up on the UES. Shame on Kallos and all the self serving parents t hat think 250,000 bucks will make their child safe or those that live here. Embarassing to even know folks thought this a good idea. You can get a company to come put a solar roof on your home or business for 10,000, not sure where all the extra money will go...oh, wait, we all know that RI is rigged and fixed where a lot of people line their pockets with extra cash. What a joke! If I had children, they would go to school in the city anyways, not here.
I think the roof idea is not simply installing solar panels - they want to transform it into a garden. That probably does involve quite an outlay - for an engineering study, plans to be drawn up, and the roof installed.
Did you know that green roofs, or the installation of solar panels - are now the rule in France for new buildings? http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/mar/20/france-decrees-new-rooftops-must-be-covered-in-plants-or-solar-panels
I attended the event - it was fantastic! Luckily I had a spot under some trees, near the podium. I also was at a fence - so could lean on it or stand on it even the whole time - which was also fantastic. Water bottles were given out by volunteers - and some attendees nibbled on sandwiches, cookies, energy bars around me. I had an energy bar myself.
It was well worth the wait - the speech was fantastic!
Matt Katz & Sherie Helstien wrong: Hillary/Bill Clinton drive thru Roosevelt Island Day, no ruckus. Here is photo of them stopping. Look carefully thru tinted windows, you can see them waiving to us. I waived back.
As I predicted, it all would be handled deftly by security and Public Safety staff. Thanks to Urban American, RIOC, Roosevelt Island Youth Program, etc. for a really great day. And Hillary and Bill, thanks for waiving!
