NY State Assembly Member Rebecca Seawright, Chair Of Aging Committee, Asks The MTA Bus Company To Send Mobile Sales Vehicle To Roosevelt Island To Help With Reduced Fare Application And Other Services

The MTA has a Mobile Sales vehicle program that travels to various NYC neighborhoods offering services such as:

  • Get help with a Reduced-Fare application
  • Get more information about OMNY and sign up
  • Transfer MetroCard balances (full-fare and Reduced-Fare to OMNY account)
  • Report a lost/stolen Reduced-Fare MetroCard
  • Ask our team about any OMNY-related issues
  • Add money to your OMNY card

As far as I'm aware, the MTA Mobile Sales service has not come to Roosevelt Island.

I asked Roosevelt Island's NY State Assembly Member Rebecca Seawright if she could help get the MTA to bring a mobile sales vehicle to Roosevelt Island.

Today, Ms Seawright shares this letter she sent to Senior Vice President Department of Buses/MTA Bus Company Frank Annicaro.
Dear Vice President Annicaro:

Thank you very much for your leadership at the MTA.

On behalf of my constituents on Roosevelt Island, I am writing you today to request that a mobile sales vehicle return to the Island.

As you know, Roosevelt Island’s over twelve thousand residents have limited public transportation options. The Tram’s recent, well-chronicled overcrowding has only intensified these challenges.

Over twenty percent of residents are older New Yorkers and thousands are people with disabilities.  Both groups are eligible for reduced fare and would benefit from the mobile sales vehicle.  As Chair of the Assembly’s Aging Committee, I request the return of the Roosevelt Island mobile sales service providing access to reduced fare applications, OMNY guidance and other customer services, that would otherwise be inaccessible to older people and people with disabilities.

I remain thankful to your department for providing these vehicles to my district on the Upper East Side. I have witnessed firsthand the benefits they provide, especially during the current MetroCard-to-OMNY transition.

Thank you for your consideration. I appreciate your attention to this important matter of accessibility. If we may provide additional information, please do not hesitate to contact my Chief of Staff, Courtney Ferrissey, at 212-288-4607.

Sincerely,

Rebecca A. Seawright,  New York State Assembly Member

No Roosevelt Island F Train Service From Manhattan This Weekend - Plan On Long Line At Roosevelt Island Manhattan Tram Station

According to the MTA, there will be no Roosevelt Island F Train service from Manhattan this weekend.

You're Invited To May 21 Talk By Artist Diana Cooper About Her Roosevelt Island "Double Take" Mosaic Mural - A Ten Year Odyssey From Start To Finish Before Installed In Front Of MTA's East River Ventilation Tunnel

As reported July 14, 2023:

On Wednesday July 6, the plywood wall was removed from the front of the MTA's East River Ventilation shaft across from the Roosevelt Island F Train subway station to unveil the Double Take mosaic by artist Diana Cooper....

The Roosevelt Island Historical Society (RIHS) is hosting a free lecture by Ms Cooper about the "Double Take" mural tomorrow evening, May 21, at the NY Public Library Roosevelt Island branch (504 Main Street) beginning at 6:30 p.m. You're invited to attend the free lecture.

RIHS President Judy Berdy reported at the Double Take unveiling last July :

THE WALL IS REVEALED

IT TOOK OVER 10 YEARS!

The story starts in February, 2013 when the RIHS asked RIOC to find a better design for the wall outside the vent shaft building across from our subway station.

When at a RIOC Operations Committe meeting I learned of the project and that a brick wall was the idea planned for the wall. The RIOC Operations Committee approved the idea and informed New York Transit.

Little did I know this would be a 10 year odyssey.

The first step was for architects to come and examine the site. They arrived by subway and commented on the ugly site of the vent shaft building obstructing the Manhattan skyline.

A time later MTA Arts for Transit (now MTA Art & Design) held a meeting with a committee of professional including curators, artists, political representatives and staff to select a group of artists to be asked to submit designs. After reviewing the work of about 25 artists the group was down to five candidates.

After submissions by three artists (two were not available) Diana Cooper was chosen. This was just the beginning of the project that suffered from many delays....

I spoke with Ms Cooper

and Ms Berdy

MTA Completes 63rd St Tunnel Rehab Project, Regular Roosevelt Island F Train Service Returns Today - MTA Bigwigs, RIOC Leadership & Cornell Tech Mascot Touchdown Greet Roosevelt Island F Train Riders At The Subway This Morning

Regular F train service for Roosevelt Island, as well as the Queensbridge/21 Street and Lexington/63rd Street, subway stations resumed today with completion this past weekend of the MTA's 63rd Street Tunnel Direct Fixation Project which started last August 28.

To mark the occasion, MTA NYC Transit President Rich Davey together with MTA Construction & Development President Jamie Torres-Springer, Roosevelt Island Operating Corp's (RIOC) Interim Leadership Team member Gerrald Ellis, Cornell Tech Dean Greg Morrisett

and Cornell Mascot Touchdown greeted riders at the Roosevelt Island F train station this morning.

I spoke with Mr Davey and Mr Torres-Springer about the completion of 63rd Street Rehab Tunnel Project. According to Mr Torres-Springer:

We're always working on state of good repair across the system. It was important here that we rebuilt the track all the way from 63rd Street in Manhattan to Queensbridge in Queens. We rebuilt 25,000 feet of track. But in this case, in order to make sure that it was reliable for decades to come, we fully rebuilt it. We demolished what was there and we rebuilt the track, the third rail, the concrete foundation, the signals, all of it to make a more reliable ride for F Train riders.... The modern technology that we've used in the rebuild means that everyone will experience a smoother ride...

I asked Mr Davey about the breathing problems some riders experienced with dust in the air at the station. Mr Davey replied:
You wouldn't know it. We actually had our mobile wash team in here last night to clean up but because of the Piston effect of the train, some of the dust  in the tunnel itself was blown into the station so that'll subside relatively quickly. We'll have our wash teams back to do that but that's fairly common when you have such a complicated and large construction project.... we'll be out to clean it up and make sure that the stations are spic and span.
I also spoke with Roosevelt Island resident Paul Krikler, who along with resident Matt Wald, played a key part in organizing and advocating for the Roosevelt Island community during the seven months of the 63rd Street Tunnel Rehab project.

Here's what they said.

Some comments about today's return of regular F Train service on Roosevelt Islander Instagram page:
  • I really hope this means we will now have consistent regular full weekend service as well. Before this full shut down, it was the exception, not the norm, to have the train running in both directions on the weekends, and sometimes it wasn't running at all on the weekends.
  • I am very proud that is running and grateful yet I am highly disappointed @rooseveltislandny @riocny @mta @nycmayor we could take a few hours to give the station a deep floor - steam cleaning and I say this respectfully. As a proud New Yorker, entering and breathing in the layers of debris this am was saddening . I would say I am sure volunteers like myself would mop and give it a good clean , however we do have the financial means to give it at least one grand opening mop ( remove some layers of durst everywhere) please take a moment to give our station a little CLEANING LOVE it would of been such a highlight to the grand opening
  • I love that they’re standing there like they restored service with their own hands. Shout out to the construction workers who worked through the weekends for almost a year to end this travel nightmare.
  • Thanks to the workers for making improvements that @rooseveltislander complains about and then you make those fixes but @rooseveltislander turns to complaining during the whole duration of the project!
  • I was most excited to ride the F back from Manhattan today. I had just missed the last train and didn’t have to wait 20 minutes for the next one! It was great!

We apologize for the inconvenience and will work to ensure full service is restored as quickly as possible.

Thank you.

Roosevelt Island NY State Assembly Member Rebecca Seawright Tells CEO Janno Lieber That MTA Has Been Reluctant To Offer Adequate Supplemental Subway Service To Roosevelt Island Residents During Work On 63 Street Tunnel Project - Lieber Says We Are On Schedule With Completion Of Track Work

As previously reported, due to the MTA's work on the 63rd Street Tunnel Project:

There will be no Roosevelt Island weekend F Train service to and from Manhattan beginning February 10 -12 and continuing for the next two weekends of February 17-19 and 24-26....

... Project completion is still slated for Q1, 2024, subject to change....

During the January 24 NY State Joint Budget Hearing on Transportation, Roosevelt Island's NY State Assembly Member Rebecca Seawright asked MTA Chair & CEO Janno Lieber:

Right now there are two elevators in service. One is out. Many of the residents are people with disabilities. They're not able to walk up and down the stairs for two levels and so I would like to know what the MTA is planning to do to bring some relief for these citizens as well as the F Train shuttle that runes every 20 minutes.

There will be no shuttle service at all in 3 weekends in February. The Tram that services the Island is the same. Residents have been telling me that the line can stretch all the way to 3rd Avenue and it is just not feasible

RIOC has stopped the Red Bus shuttle service on the Island to  Manhattan

It doesn't have the capacity to run the shuttle because of the strong demands on the Island. The MTA has been very reluctant to offer adequate supplemental service for the residents. So If you could just address this, I would appreciate it.

According to Mr Lieber:

We are on schedule with completion of the track work in the 63rd Street tunnel....

Watch the full Q&A between Ms Seawright and Mr Lieber.
