Roosevelt Island 2011 Outdoor Summer Movie Schedule At Firefighters Field - Southpoint Park Outdoor Movie Site Is Missed, Here's The Latest On Site's Wild Gardens Park and Kahn/FDR Mausoleum Construction Projects
Received the following listings from the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) announcing the schedule and films selected to be shown this summer at the Roosevelt Island Outdoor Movie Series shown at Firefighters Field.
6/25/11 - Iron Man 2 (Rain Date: 7/3/11)The Firefighters Field location is a nice venue for outdoor movies and certainly convenient to get to but the Southpoint Park location where Roosevelt Island movies were originally shown was a fantastic site for watching outdoor movies and enjoying the NYC skyline and waterfront views.
7/9/11 - The Goonies (Rain Date: 7/17/11)
7/23/11 - Star Trek (Rain Date: 7/31/11)
8/6/11 - Up (Rain Date: 8/14/11)
8/20/11 - Tron (Rain Date: 8/28/11)

Southpoint Park is currently closed while the Wild Gardens/Green Room section of the Park on the north end and the Kahn/FDR Memorial Boondoggle on the south end are being built.

Wild Gardens/Green Rooms is scheduled to open this summer in July and Kahn/FDR in a couple of years.
Here's the recent state of construction for the Death Box/Mausoleum portion of the Kahn/FDR Memorial at the southern tip of Southpoint Park which blocks and destroys this previous great panoramic NYC skyline and waterfront view from Southpoint Park.

More pictures of the Kahn/FDR Memorial Boondoggle construction here and here as well as this image of what the area used to look like before construction on this waste of tens of millions of taxpayers dollars (and some private donations) began.

Agreed. And now is a more appropriate time than ever to point out that millions of dollars of state money is being wasted on this granite behemoth, view ruining, congestion causing monolith instead of keeping a few dozen more teachers from being laid off in the city. The representative lobbying for this park and the RIOC which approved and allowed this construction should be ashamed. This isn't what the person being memorialized would have ever wanted or agreed to.
None of this money spent on the memorial is money that the city could use to avoid teacher lay-offs. I am looking forward to the new Southpoint Park. It's going to be great.
@Anon,
It was State funding and they have every ability to reallocate that money from the budget it was in, to something else. Arguments like, it was capital funding, it was already allocated, blah blah blah miss the point that the legislature is responsible for every dollar they spend and this is the type of spending that make people weary of government.
If nothing else it will be a ironic reminder of FDR's worst moments, like dragging out the great depression through frivolous government spending, rather than his work in fighting for minorities (although he did intern 100,000 or so people just for being Japanese).
So you can chew on that while you are walking through the new monument, not enjoying the New York skyline.
Trevre, the thing is that even here on RI the majority is in favor of getting this memorial built. Outside of RI there is also a lot of support to get this finally done. It is money well spent after all. There are other ways to address the budget woes the state is having.
That's funny, all the survey results I have seen show limited counts and negative results, not exactly a majority vote. "It is money well spent after all"? And you conclude this based on what? Its funny how when its not your land, not your money, its easy to say it is money well spent. If there was really support for this they should have been able to raise the money independently, but they couldn't. I understand memorials are controversial, but this one is so obviously dated and wrong for its location.
All they would have to do is maintain the site lines and views and few would be opposed to the construction of the memorial, but they won't and it will forever stand as a an eyesore to those looking for a great view of Manhattan from the south end of the island.
You have your personal opinion about this memorial, I have mine. I am glad it is being built. I assume you are not going to visit it once it is finished because you have such strong feelings against it?
So your best argument is there is a lot of support for it here(which there isn't according to the two surveys) and off the island (which there isn't since it has taken 35 years to get it started and it is still barely half funded). And then to top that off you leave it with you have an opinion?
Well that certainly doesn't make it a very fun discussion. Is there anyone out there who can come support this thing with more than a opinion and vaguely referenced support?
Do you support it enough to donate to finish it? I didn't think so.
Very wrong.
Wire survey about 200 participants. Hardly significant out of 12000 people was about dead even.
They have raised about 90-95 percent of the funds.
Trevre, there is really not much to discuss it. The monies have been raised (more money has been raised privately than the state chipped in, btw), it will be good for Roosevelt Island, it looks great (IMHO), and very few people are actually against it (the participation rate of the survey would have been a lot better if there was a real strong opposition). Yes, that is good enough for me. I don't have any deeper reasons why I support it.
If I had the money I would make a contribution. I don't and I am glad others do.
I disagree with pretty much all the other points you have been making against the memorial and any discussions with you would be boring. I wouldn't have a chance to convince you nor do you have any chance to convince me. Yes, I opt out from any further discussions.
FDR forged ahead through the darkest days of the 20th Century, and fought for the 4 Freedoms here & overseas. I believe the memorial was inspired by and expresses FDR's unwavering purpose to further these human rights throughout his presidency.
I am new poster and I agree with Trevre. In my opinion, the monument is ugly and did not justify cutting trees and removing green spaces.

I live on the island and I'm not going to visit the memorial once it's built as I don’t find it interesting or attractive. It’s just a bunch of concrete! There was grass and trees which were killed to build some bunch of cold lifeless concrete!
torres must understand, that she is nothing on this island .as long as she doses not come up with any new ideas , she will have a job . see the people who live in rivercross run this island not rioc .the people who live in rivercross tell rioc what to do . just ask the last rioc pres., we all know why he was fired dont we .rivercross. .but you will never know the real reason why he was fired by reading the main street wire . .. because the guy who runs the wire lives in rivercross ,
JR - your post about Rivercross is so ludicrous, it barely needs pointing out. If Rivercross ran the island, it would have been out of the ML program by 1998. If only...
well that is what they are trying to do , and the last rioc pres, was not having it, so the people in rivercross fired him. so now its torres . as long as she doses what she is told to do by rivercross , so they can come out of m.l she will have a job , those greedy people in river cross want to make a killing on their apartments and torres must go along with it ,other wise she will be out of a job ,
see rivercross needs the o,k from rioc to come out of m.l. /that is something the last rioc pres, did not want , thats why he was kicked out .so now torres must go along with the people in rivercross or she will be out of a job .
