Roosevelt Island Waterfront Comedy Night At Pier NYC Last Thursday

Roosevelt Island resident Jonathan Kalkin shares this photo from last Thursday's Comedy Night at Pier NYC

and adds:
I actually saw @dzoldan from @standupny tweet about Roosevelt Island a year ago and asked him about having a comedy night here. I got him in contact with the Hoo brothers and the rest is history. Comedy night on the water at PierNYC has been very successful. It is great to see businesses on Roosevelt Island starting to become destination spots for food and entertainment.

By allowing comedy night to take place at the pier, RIOC missed the boat on this one. Vulgarity should be confined to indoor spaces, not amplified and broadcast to be heard by kids passing by and at the neighboring buildings. Left a message for Leslie Tores but she never responded.

Do you think kids don't already know these words?

I would normally delete this type of language but in this instance it is necessary to describe the offending language so it will stay.

However, as long as an outdoor Comedy Night is permitted by RIOC, I am troubled at the idea of RIOC determining what is and is not "acceptable" language and "vetting content" no matter how disgusting the content may be.

Maybe you're right, since RIOC only screens G rated films in their summer film series - they shun any possibly controversial/offensive features. However, RIOC doesn't own the PierNYC business - it just leases the space to them. PierNYC decided to hire a comic with an "adult" act, it's their business, they can do it. Possibly it makes sense given that it's a restaurant featuring alcoholic drinks, thus geared more to an adult crowd. You think a more family-friendly act would be more appropriate? Maybe the comic could turn down the volume on his PA..

I'm not opposed to the content, I'm questioning the decision to allow this broadcast in a public space. It should be done indoors at the Riverwalk Bar and Grill not outdoors.

Thank you for allowing my post. In hindsight I agree that RIOC should not determine the content. As I said to CheshireKitty, this sort of comedy should be performed indoors not in a public space in a residential neighborhood.

It is rather ironic the Riverwalk owners who 'pride themselves as doing the local community a big favors with their spot. However, it is important that they also aware of the distinction between public space vs private enclosed space policies; most of all, the promenade and pier are part of RIOC management, and such bad taste vulgarity and the usual rowdy zogspot drinkers are turning that area into "Roosevelt Shore" of booze and provanity; at end of the day, its the profits not the public interest that matter most. The establishment also taping their posters and flyers all over the tram pillars without proper cleaning up, another point of taking advantage of the blur line between private/public utility.

Since Ms. Tores and her staff allow drugs to be sold right out side their front door by gangs of thugs at night and during the day, do you expect they would ban profanity from the island?

westviewgirl said...

Ms Tores and her staff never call people back nor respond to emails. Never, never never, ask anyone..they do not correspond to the natives here...they do not live here, so responding to our emails or phone calls would be too polite and professional.

good point... Hey, do you know their salary to sit in that office over there? Why are a lot of their meetings behinds closed doors also?

westviewgirl said...

they are taping their postcards all over the place, I thought that people that did that would be fined?

I don't know - people use swear words all the time in public in earshot of other people who may not wish to hear these words. It's become so commonplace, so I think alot of these words have lost their "shock" or "offensive" value. I can't recall an outdoor profanity-laced comedy-club type act in a public park setting though - although it must happen sometimes. I think the dissonance is from it being in a park area - and parks are associated often with quiet contemplation - a place to get away from the hurly-burly of everyday life. I don't know - the issue of having the comedy act at PierNYC doesn't really bother me generally. Stand-up comedy is often outrageous and people love that. So PierNYC's customers are even happier - which is a good thing. If you're concerned that little kids are going to be "corrupted" or "ruined" by hearing offensive words - they know all these words already. The question is - is PierNYC somehow virtually "taking over" more promenade space by presenting an amplified stand-up routine because it does mean that other park-users are basically subjected to (or enjoy - depending on one's point of view) the show even if they are in the public part of the pier and probably a ways down the promenade as well.

Some flyers are sometimes taped on non-kiosk areas - but they are quickly taken down. I wonder if the advertisers are ever fined, though. The kiosks are the places provided for ads/announcements. OTOH, it is exceptional to have a comedy act at the Pier - so maybe RIOC just let it go because of the unique/singular nature of the shows.

I wouldn't deny people having a drink or two and a good time. What the heck else can people do? Either people go to bars to drink, or at a restaurant or cafe or club. PierNYC combines a restaurant and bar and now, even a club. If the profanity bothers you though, then you should complain to Sal that the possibly loud enjoyment of his patrons is now interfering with your quiet enjoyment of the pier and the view. This problem is widespread and ongoing throughout the areas of NYC that have many clubs/bars/restaurants, such as the East Village - where residents cannot sleep at night for all the noise of carousing drinkers, etc. Yet the restaurant/bar industry is key - so where do you draw the line or find a balance between the need for some people to drink etc. and others to sleep?

I'm pretty sure my 5 year old doesn't, but I'll ask him tonight.

Is there such thing as double standard for the lease and policies that some may be benefit more than the other, say non profits organizations or some lady selling cake on the island. RIOC is clealy in favor of PierNYC so they can continue to get more good publicity for Roosevelt Island without the need to leave their office suite, and let those often drunken vulgar zogspot hipsters to take over the residential ambience that is uniquely Roosevelt Island with rowdy, bad taste acts blasting through speakers, obstruction of sidewalk all for the sake of private interest. With the close proximity to Legacy and Child School, such profanity and boozy culture within such close proximity should be taken into consideration specially with the summer officially over, and seemingly PierNYC taking advantage of RIOC's flexibility and carefree attitude to further extend their business interest

Actually, many neighborhoods do successfully fight "adult" businesses of all kinds from operating in areas near schools. I don't think the Pier is that close to the island's schools or day care centers etc. Also, at night when the comedy act would be on, schools are closed. As far as the drunks are concerned, it's likely some also become sloshed at Trellis bar, or RW. What can you do - it's the downside of bars I suppose. If the drunk is loud and unruly, then it is annoying and disruptive to the neighborhood. As far as putting up advertising on posts, it's a good question if RIOC is letting it stay because it wants to draw visitors to RI etc.

RIOC has replied to me when I've called in the past. I think they are professional. If your calls aren't being returned, keep track of the time and date of the calls, including the name of the person you spoke with; then you can then submit the call log along with a complaining letter to the Wire - or to the blog - which may "shame" RIOC into being more responsive. However, I've never had a problem with someone at RIOC calling me back. That at least is my personal experience with them.
